OSU just finished its worst season in decades.  The most losses since 1897, in fact.
This year the MAC had two shots at 'em and failed twice BEFORE 5 starters returned.  But never mind the specifics; we all know that UT was one of the MAC's very best.  The MAC should have gotten it done in 2011.

Should we quit flogging OSU at every opportunity and acknowledge their inate superiority or cling to the hope that we can elevate OUr program(s) to be regularly competitive?

Just askin'.

Oy. I really wish you hadn't asked. If message boards have personalities, this message board is way too fixated on OSU.

I think you are confused, Oklahoma State University did not play any MAC Schools this year and only lost one game.  Not sure who you are talking about.

I give NO QUARTER to OSU yes they are solid. They also bring have billion dollar facilities and pay players. If I could get $1,000 hand shakes every game I would sign a letter of intent too.

Of course Oregon State University went 3-9, but they didn't play any MAC schools, either.

We've always said that there isn't much difference between good MAC teams and even some of the better AQ teams.  In basketball, one or two players may make a huge difference.  In football, it takes a few more.  Five or six players out of 85 or 90 (or more) is only five or six percent of the roster.  Toledo lost to O$U by five and actually beat Syracuse, although officially it's a loss thanks to lousy replay officiating; Temps lost to PSU by four and clubbed MD.  A few players is all it takes.

I agree! I could care less about Ohio State, I care about Ohio.

I also vote for Option 1. With Urban Meyer on board I think this is the last year OSU has a losing record for a very long time. Plus, Ohio State's athletic budget exceeds $100 million annually. How can we compete with that? Yes I agree-on any given Saturday Ohio or any other top MAC team can beat OSU in one game. But over the course of a season I think we'd get our butt kicked more often than not.

I don't know a single tOSU hater that is also an Ohio fan that even remotely holds tOSU in low esteem because we feel we are better than them or that we want to "elevate OUr program(s) to be regularly competitive" with their's.

They do a great job providing fuel that feeds the flogging that has absolutely nothing to do with us and our program.

And I won't even acknowledge the word "superiority", that is just bad word choice on your part.

Well there is at least one striking resemblance...

O$U = O-fer against SEC teams in Bowl games...

Temple = O-fer against MAC teams with a winning record...

OK, let's put this in perspective:

1897 W Ohio St. 6 Ohio Medical 0        Columbus, OH
1897 L Ohio St. 0 Case Institute of Technology (OH) 14        Columbus, OH
1897 L Ohio St. 0 Michigan 34        Ann Arbor, MI
1897 T Ohio St. 12 Otterbein (OH) 12        Columbus, OH
1897 L Ohio St. 0 Columbus Barracks (OH) 6        Columbus, OH
1897 L Ohio St. 0 Oberlin (OH) 44        Columbus, OH
1897 L Ohio St. 0 West Virginia 28        Parkersburg, WV
1897 L Ohio St. 0 Cincinnati (OH) 24        Cincinnati, OH
1897 L Ohio St. 0 Ohio Wesleyan 6        Columbus, OH

A few salient points:

1. OSU only played 9 games in 1897 with a record of 1-7-1, so the winning percentage was much worse that year.
2. Ohio beat WVU and in Athens and Otterbein on the road that year, and had a 7-2 record.
3. OSU was probably afraid to play us in 1897.

I know all this because I was there.

Point taken although I wasn't attempting to split hairs over the "quality" of the losses. There were a lot of more relevant seasons in between 1897 and 2011 when 7 losses could have happened, but didn't.

And, I guess, my thinly disguised sarcasm over "superiority" went undetected, but let's face it, if not 2011 then when will a MAC team claim a victory over their big, bad neighbor?

It's like our own post season record; until you've actually proven you can do it (i.e. beat A&M, win a bowl,) no amount of whining about a lack of mutual/media respect is truly justified.

The late Kermit Blosser used to tell the story that when he was in school one year Ohio had an undefeated team and was scheduled to play Ohio State the next year but A&M cancelled the game because the off-white and blood-red were afraid they were going to get beaten.  Anyone who was around Kermit for any length of time probably heard this story multiple times.  I only saw him occasionally, and I heard the story at least twice.  So it wasn't just in 1897 that Ohio State was afraid to play Ohio!

I want to add one more likeable item to this thread all in fun, as they say.

Today's Dispatch ran an item about Devier Posey being invited to the Senior Bowl (that's a thread by itself).

In expressing his gratitude, Mr. Posey, the younger, said he would be happy to put on his "silver helmet" again.

Now we can all sit back and wait for the offended multitudes here to express their scorn over his lack of awareness of the difference between "silver" and gray, or off-white.

Hey, Bob. It has nothing to do with giving people props for worthiness. It has to do with choking on the abjact arrogance of The Ohio State University. There is not another institution I'm aware of in the entire country with a name ending in "State University" that masquerades as merely (insert state name here).

Having lived in Michigan and Florida, I can tell you you never will find anyone affiliated with MSU or FSU depicting themself as just "Michigan" or "Florida."

It's that simple.

Excellent summary of my major bone of contention with A&M.  Next inline is the obnoxious and repetitive use of the "The."  I noticed in a pro game recently that some graduates of other schools were mocking O$U by adding a "The" before their school name in a very sarcastic tone.  The thing is that this goes way over the heads of the A&M herds who don't even suspect they are being made fun of.  Arrogance, as you point out is the real key word.  Couple that with ignorance and you have what has always been for me the thing I detest most -- those that are either arrogant about their ignorance or ignorant about their arrogance.

OCF, with one sentence you have started my day with a very big laugh that, sadly, is true rather than mere folly. Thanks!
