What gets me is that the Dispatch sports people are living in the past; they devote tons of ink to sports stories that anyone can get anywhere hours before the paper comes out, but even very few electrons to the one thing that gets very little coverage elsewhere -- state and local sports.  One reason we cut back on our hard copy subscription to the Dispatch is because so much of the national content had been thoroughly rehashed in other media long before the paper hit the streets.  I wish they would at least come up with original state and local content in their hard copy edition, and expand on it online since they don't have the constraints of filling a "news hole" on the website.  They can put extra stuff from Bob Hunter's "Rumblings" column on the website; why not additional state and local stuff?

I think they stopped paying those people.

It's great to see other Bobcat fans exercised about the Columbus media non-quality coverage of Bobcat sports. I've been a Bobcat fan from Cental Ohio for over 40 years and it has always been that way. We even have had a Bobcat alum as a famous TV sportscaster in Columbus for several decades who never gave the Cats squat on his own sportscasts.

All of the arguments against our complaining don't hold water. Ohio University and its area of influence is most certainly in the Dispatch's daily coverage area, so it is logical that the paper would give quality coverage to Ohio University sports. To not do so smacks of extreme provincialism and the idea that any coverage given to anyone besides the in-town tosu school will somehow take away some of their thunder or be a threat to them.

Yes, those of you who think it is wrong how the Columbus media treats Ohio University sports - you are right on.

The TV stations don't do too bad a job if the game is televised.  Channel 4's weekend sports guy, Matt Barnes, is an OU grad.  He proudly did highlights of the Tater Bowl and mentioned the win over Wright State right afterwards, proclaiming that it was a great day to be a Bobcat.  And Dom Tiberi will give the Cats a shoutout on Wall to Wall Sports, if there's footage available. I don't watch Channel 6/28 that much, so I don't know how they do.

Barnes is back in Ohio? That's good. He's a good guy and a great ambassador for the university. I wonder if his "Promise" billboard is still seen around Columbus.

Not its not, but yeah his first job out of OHIO was a gig as the 11pm Sports guy for Channel 4.  He even laid a bet down on the Marshall game with the other sports guy on Channel 4 and thus that guy had to wear some OHIO gear during one of the broadcasts.  I actually caught up with him at the last Bobcat Caravan in Columbus (I worked with him in Intramural Sports), officially was there on business from Channel 4 with a camera.  Though I doubt that would have even happened if it weren't for Barnes probably telling them about the Caravan.

Close -- he did a two year stint in Augusta, Georgia before landing the gig at WCMH.  (He was replaced in Augusta by OUr own Jake Young).

Frank is on the front of the sports section today. Coach of the year, in Bob Hunter's year end piece.

I'm surprised they didn't pick Urban Meyer.

And I'm only half joking.

And of course when the Ohio basketball team won 9 in a row to go to 12-1, the best the Dispatch could do was a one or two-liner under "Men's highlights" after longer, headline stories about other schools from Godknowswhere.  But when the streak ended, we get this:

College basketball notebook: Ohio’s winning streak snapped

http://www.buckeyextra.com/content/stories/2012/01/03/ohi...

Of course, it was an AP story, but where the hell were they during the streak?????

Idiots.

Unless things have changed, the AP Columbus bureau is in the Dispatch building.  I think it's in the water.

Finally, some positive Bobcat pub from the dispatch. Check out the second of three questions in today's "Ask the Experts".

And to think that my wife is of the opinion that too often I ask questions of which I already know the answers. Nah.
