Director of the Marching 110 from 1973-1990, he was an inspiration to thousands and helped bring crowds to football games during the dark ages of Ohio Football.

Mr. S's bio from the Marching 110 website.

Ronald P. Socciarelli, 1973-1990

The Ohio University Marching 110, under the direction of Professor Socciarelli, as well as the wind ensemble, toured extensively throughout the east and Midwest.  The wind ensemble was selected to perform several times at the Ohio Music Educators Association conferences and at the national meeting of the College Band Director's National Association Convention and at the National Music Teacher's Association Conference in Washington, DC.

Professor Socciarelli earned degrees from Ithaca College and the University of Michigan, and he is an active guest conductor and clinician.  Presently, he holds the title of Professor Emeritus of Music, teaching the fall quarter of each year in the areas of conducting and literature.  He now resides in Aiken, South Carolina.

In 1997, members of the Ohio University Marching 110 were honored to hear Professor Socciarelli at their annual band banquet.  Then, in 2003, Socciarelli returned once again to conduct the Marching 110 and over 200 Alumni during the annual homecoming game during the celebration of Ohio University's Bicentennial, as well as speak at the annual Alumni Banquet.

"Mr. S" will be missed. He made a big impact on my life and will always remember him.  While he was the director, we were in the dark days of Ohio Football, but helped to keep fans in the stands. His quotes will never be forgotten nor his desire for excellence. RIP MR. S.

Didn't know the man, but by my 110 friends, he's the MAN who started it all. RIP Mr. S. I think naming the new facility after Mr. S would be a grand gesture. Or another facility with the 110 in mind. He made a grand contribution to our university. He should be remembered.

Actually ,Gene Thrailkill started it all and at a very young age ( I believe he was around 28). I met him once, he had the physical stature of a football coach. (His knickname is Coach) He was offered the Oklahoma Sooner Marching Band job in 1971 and took it. At present,  I hope we can keep Dr. Suk considering the small salary I believe he makes.

Thrailkill got things started, but its Socciarelli who made the 110 into what it is today. RIP.

Thrailkill was the first director of the 110 Marching Men of Ohio.  This was when the band adopted the current style of marching and the dance routines.  It was a blend of some unique elements and what was then known as the Florida A&M cadence.  I believe we were the first band not at an historically black college to adopt this style of marching.  This takes nothing away from Dr. S., who certainly took over where Gene left of and took it to a higher level.  I just want to give credit where credit is due.  Another point is that Socciarelli was very committed to the football program and felt it was the band's job to support the program in any way possible.  I clearly remember a time he talked to a GWC luncheon and talked about the football program like he was the head cheerleader.  It was very inspirational.  RIP, fellow Bobcat!

For many of us who had the honor of marching in HIS band he was THE defining person who made our Ohio experience what it was.

A personality like his is just unmatched.

Calling Mr. S. "The Man" is a huge understatement.

It's just so hard to explain what he means to us.
