According to CBS Sports

http://brett-mcmurphy.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry...

DALLAS – Temple is close to joining the Big East as an all-sports member in 2012, college football industry sources told CBSSports.com Wednesday morning.

The addition of Temple is imperative for the Big East, which desperately needs a school to replace West Virginia this fall after the Mountaineers reached a $20 million agreement with the league to leave for the Big 12.

One source told CBSSports.com that Temple to the Big East in 2012 "is done."

MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, attending the BCS meetings at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Grand Hyatt Hotel, told CBSSports.com that discussions are ongoing between Temple and the Big East.

"I don't know where those will lead," Steinbrecher said.

The Big East initially wanted Boise State, which will join in 2013, to join this fall as West Virginia’s replacement. However, the Big East was not willing to provide the Broncos with about $10 million they needed to leave the Mountain West in football and have their Olympic sports join the WAC a year early.

With Boise State out of the picture, the Big East then turned its attention to Temple. The Mid-American Conference's exit fee is $2.5 million with two years notice, but it's unknown what the amount what be by providing less than a year's notice, a source said. The Owls’ Olympic sports compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Temple was one of the Big East’s original eight football members in 1991, but was expelled from the league after the 2004 season for not being competitive and not meeting certain financial requirements. However, the Owls’ program has been resurrected under the direction of Al Golden and Steve Addazio, posting a 26-12 record the last three seasons.

Golden, who left for Miami after the 2010 season, guided the Owls to their first bowl in 30 years. Addazio completed his first year with a 37-15 victory against Wyoming in the New Mexico Bowl in December, only the second bowl victory in school history.

The addition of Temple will be the latest change for the Big East, which also added Memphis two weeks ago.

With Temple being added, the Big East’s membership is expected to have 12 football members and 16 basketball members in 2012. In 2013, the football membership will grow to 15 with the addition of Boise State, SMU, UCF, Houston and San Diego State. However, if Pittsburgh and Syracuse are allowed to leave a year early to the ACC, the league would have 13 football members.

In 2014, the football membership will be 13 (after Pittsburgh and Syracuse leave) but it will grow to 14 in 2015 with the addition of Navy.

Sources told CBSSports.com, the reason the Big East decided to go beyond 12 football members is because the league is preparing for the possibility it will lose Louisville if the Big 12 decides to expand by at least another team.

Multiple sources have told CBSSports.com that Louisville is the consensus choice for the Big 12’s 11th member, if the league expands, and that the Cardinals would accept an invitation to the Big 12.

Two weeks ago when the Big East added Memphis, Big East commissioner John Marinatto said the league had reached its “primary objective” of securing a 12-team football league when Navy joins in 2015.

“We’re always going to be vigilant and we’re going to continue to do whatever is in the best interest of the conference,” Marinatto said. “You never say never (about future expansion), I guess. But we’ve reached our goal and we’re pleased that we’ve done that. But we’re always going to be obviously continuing to evaluate different opportunities as time goes on.”

It's $2.5 million with two seasons notice. My guess it would be a minimum of $5 million with less than six months to the start of fall camp, but what do I know?

Didn't put them over the barrel before, ought to now with such short notice.  Take a pound of flesh and watch them flee to a flaming hulk of a football conference they still won't be able to compete in. (Assuming this is remotely more valid than it's been the last how many years now?).

We are all jealous.

Just wait until UMass gets traction as the 14th Big East football team....

I'd rather get that open spot in the A-10 for basketball, than the Big East for football.

Xavier and Dayton would be great new rivals.

Somebody please explain to me again what taking these "football" only schools does to enhance the MAC as a conference? When a school such as a Central Florida or Temple will not commit to a full MAC membership, what exactly has been the benefit to allowing them to "rent" space in the MAC for football? Same applies to UMASS, I see NO upside what-so-ever in adding them for "football only".

Ultimately, the MAC had a team for a few years in football that was better than the average team in the MAC so it made the league a bit more competitive. The league also got basketball games scheduled with Temple through the arrangment and now will be getting a large sum of cash. I guess it's not much, but it's better than nothing, right?

I'm not sure if UMass will bring as much to the table, thoguh.

Why not take them?  Is there any negative impact at all?  Nobody cares that they are football only.

Exposure for one thing.  For the conference.  And each school.  For recruits and general students.  Some folks in Philadelphia know Ohio University exists now that we own Temple.  Next up:  Massachusettes.

Improving the conference.  UMass will quickly be one of the better football programs in the MAC in all aspects.  Temple was.  I'm sorry to see them go.

If only we could convince Deleware to join now.....

As I have tried to explain for several years, playing a Top 25 BB team that is very consistently high RPI (currently 16) can help an at large MAC BB team entertain an at large bid to March Madness. Unfortunately, my remarks have fallen on deaf ears. That is one of the things you could gain from having invited Temple to your FB Conference. The MAC didnt capitalize on that advantage. Since BB was and remains our primary sport, Temple BB made RPI concessions to play the 4 MAC schools each year for the opportunity to resurrect our FB Program. It could have hurt us but we won the A10 3 years to get the auto bid.

Maybe some of the people who constantly whined in the east about their precious schedule being off balance will now see a little what Temple may have brought. I know Temple's gate for basketball and football was always one of each school's highest. Wasnt TU's bisit to your BB arean over last year's Christmas Holiday a very good gate, especially considering school break ?

If this happens, I have a sneaking suspicion the MAC will not get a penny more than $2.5 million, and probably won't try that hard to get any more, which is sad.

You make some good points here.

And I've always had problems supporting taking schools for a single sport.  Central Florida used us.  And I wanted Temple for basketball badly, though I knew that was unrealistic.

I think the MAC should have leveraged the situation to try to upgrade it's basketball even more.  But getting games vs. Temple each season admittedly did help our league.

According to people I know who are big RU fans/boosters,the reason the Big East is looking at Temple is beause several other teams are considered likely to leave the conference in the very near future.
The teams they said may jump include some or all of the following:
Louisville
Cincy
U Conn

RU is also supposed to be looking to get out. Something their fans seem to really want.

Louisville has been pretty openly whoring itself to the Big 12. If/when they jump, UC could eventually follow. The rumblings of Rutgers to the B1G have died down since Nebraska took them to 12, but if Delany can get enough pressure on Notre Dame get them in as well, Rutgers could be back in play to get to 14. And if the plus-1 or the 4 team playoff happens, that might just force Notre Dame's hand.

UConn's options seem to be more limited, but I would think the ACC is possible, and maybe even the B1G if they want to get to 16. I doubt they do, but who knows.

You're right on the money from what the people I know from RU have said:

Louisville and Cincy :  Looking for the Big 12

U Conn.: ACC

RU:Would like Big 10,but more likely ACC
