Give me a player who's either a true freshman, redshirt freshman, or sophomore who will come out of nowhere and be an impact player.

Give me Andrew Marshall or Kobi Gorman.

DJ Walker (freshman Safety) will be getting lots of PT per Austin Brawley. I'll say Kobi Gorman as well since we don't know who will step up on the DL behind Rodney Matthews and Rayyan Buell.

Also sounds like Aramoni Rhone has made a big impression in spring ball to be the Bostic replacement of sorts.

Bradley Weaver if healthy will make an impact at DE.

Safety is a good place to make a guess.

Idk if anyone paid a lot of attention to the first scrimmage video that came out today but it looks like true freshman Chase Hendricks is off to a good start. Made a few good catches in the video and a TD while running on with the second team it looks like. Tim Albin also mentioned him as a standout. Might be one to look out for.

I will keep an eye on these guys this year and will probably see the field at some time this year.

QB
Parker Navarro….3rd string and not a rookie yet we may want to see him on the field…quite the runner.

RB
Ricky Hunt…..can take it to the house.

WR
Chase Hendricks….star of 1st scrimmage.

OL
Dane Jackson transfer I think N.Texas….Center who should start next year.

DL
Kobi Gorman…gonna be a monster on a thin D-line.

LB
Andrew Marshall…losing starters but this guy is part of the future.

CB
Kendall Bannister….Va all state who has the it factor.

S
Walter Reynolds….Holy Cross transfer with 5 ints last year….the glue of our secondary.

Smart money is *somebody on defense*.... but I'll go Ricky Hunt. Haven't seen a freshman this good since... man, you gotta go all the way back to Sieh Bangura.

A lot in front of him, but he's too good to keep off the field.

I cannot wait to see Walter Reynolds and I also saw that in one of the Bobcat articles that one of our guys said Miles Fleming is going to make an impact aftert transferring in from Row the Boat Land. If those two guys can land time in our secondary with the returnees I feel pretty good about our defense.

...

The novel thing about this projection is that these are the four HIGHEST ranked Ohio recruits from 2023. It has traditionally been true that the LOWEST rank recruit in the class is the one who turns out to be a starter. That would be..., um, Spetic, the kicker. Oh, NVM. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

If Rourke is 100% will we see any of Harris and Navarro outside of garbage time? There are three quarterbacks who don't have the same skill sets. Will the offense ever make use of that here and there?

I think Doc was hinting that Navarro might be on the field in another position, or in a wildcat formation or something like that.

I believe there is a very real chance CJ Harris will be under center for our first two games.
Last year Navarro did see the field a little in the first few games. And as well as Harris played if we get in some major variations like the wildcat then, I agree, it is probably Navarro that will be in. That was before Rourke really hit his stride. Our offense looked great against FAU but struggled mightily against Penn State and Iowa State. Rourke struggled trying to run the offense as Nettleton, Vick, and his brother ran it in his first couple of years. He was working hard on his reads and accelerating out of them during his first few years in college and I think the coordinators have adapted the system to him and letting him sling it. But I don't think most of us, and possibly the staff, started realizing what we have until Fordham and Akron and just how tough an defense we faced at Penn State and Iowa State. Navarro was out for the year by then. How much Navarro would have continued to play after Rourke started setting records is anyone's guess.
I believe there is a very real chance CJ Harris will be under center for our first two games.
I think most of us understand this is a possibility. The SDSU line opened in May at 3.0. It got up to 4.5 a couple of weeks ago. I wonder if it had anything to do with the information about Rourke possibly not being ready around media day and the casual bettor previously believing Rourke was close to a sure thing. It has dropped back to 3.0 since then. I don't know what that means or if it is possible that there are people out there outside the program with information on Rourke that none of us have. That seems unlikely.

Anyway, I agree, Harris is likely to be the primary backup and get most of the time if Rourke can't play even though he entered last year as the #3 QB. But I don't think we know that for sure. No depth chart is out. At the start of the season the more we keep Rourke off the field the less likely he is to reinjure his knee. Will Harris get some time in the normal offense even after Rourke is cleared? And he is a different QB that can run the offense a little bit differently.

Any info on the status of Navarro? He started the 2022 season ahead of Harris but Harris looked solid given the circumstances at the end of 2022. Did Harris take over number two on the depth chart? If even so, do think Parker will be healthy to start 2023 and get some packages?

If we take Rourke out of the game for a gimmick play for the 3rd string QB, there had better be security in my section.

Best case, Navarro is waiting for Rourke to leave for a shot at CJ in 2024. By that point, CJ will have been in the program for four years, a three year back-up with starting experience and a bowl MVP trophy.

CJ is the clear #2.

And I think Winters will pass Navarro in 24.

I think if this is the case then Navarro gets reps--we've regularly used two QBS in nonconference games in the past. He's more explosive than CJ and could shake up the game a bit if he gets in. There also is a reason that he passed CJ on the depth chart going into last year. I'm not agreeing with him being a breakout star, but if CJ starts the first two games it makes the case for a breakout by Navarro possible.

I suspect Navarro is a distant #3. He's short and, frankly, looked horrendous in his limited snaps last year.

Great question. I asked coach Albin about Quinn at a basketball game this past winter. I was excited when he signed with Ohio coming out of DeSales HS. He's bounced around between linebacker and RB. Not sure how much PT there is for him at RB with Bangura, Allison and Hunt. Hoping he sees more time on the field beyond special teams this season.

Listed as an RB this season, which I thought was pretty surprising considering our depth even down to McCormick who finished the season 2nd in carries and yards.

That surprised me as well. RB seems quite packed, with good players a long way down the depth chart. He's going to have to play very, very well to see the field.

Meanwhile, at LB, the field is wide open behind the starters. At each LB spot, someone will establish himself as the #2, and then will be the likely starter for the next several years.

Freshman LB Andrew Marshall certainly looks the part (6'3, 226)

Based on need and age, I hope it is someone like R Sophomore DE Bradley Weaver or DT Kobi Gorman.

Like someone else said, the freshman kicker may prove to be that guy which wouldnt be the worst thing. We lost Vakos who was very solid and we lost the kickoff guy so someone like Gianni Spetic who did both very well in high school would be a big help.

With the depth chart out, there are a lots of new names on the Depth Chart. I may not have this completely right, and if so, feel free to correct me:
Xfers/JUCO
#2 Center - Dane Jackson, xfer NTSU
#3 DE - Seegars, xfer from Liberty, was a LB
#3 DT - T Cox, Xfer from Purdue, was a LB/DE
#2 SS - Flemming, Xfer from Minnesota
#1 FS - Reynolds, Xfer from Holy Cross
#2 FC - Pearson, JUCO 247 rated 82
#1 P - Wheatley, xfer from Vandy

Scholarship Freshmen
#4 TE Williams, 247 rated 84
#3 RB Hunt, 247 rated 86
#2 WR-Z Hendricks, 247 rated 86
#2 NT Gorman, 247 rated 86
#1 PK Spetic, 247 rated 75

PWO Freshmen
#3 WR-X Debrow, Very late addition to the class, unrated
#2 JACK Schmitz, unrated, and there isn't even a thread in on BA about him
#2 PK Kasee, unrated

First, it seems that Ohio did a great job on transfers this year. Almost all of the transfers are on the depth chart, including two starters and 3 backups. Second, it seems that 247 is getting better at rating G5 athletes. Three of the four freshmen that they rated as Ohio's best, at 86, are on the depth chart, two second stringers and 1 third stringer (who is behind two outstanding players). As is usual, however, the lowest rated player in the class, Spetic, will not only play, he'll be the starter (albeit on special teams).

Without even a thread about in him on the BA Recruiting Forum, the most "out of nowhere young guy star" looks to be Kadin Schmitz. He didn't go completely unnoticed, though, as the keen eyes of Doc Bobcat took note of his addition to the roster on 1/29/23:

Close game. Rourke should sit out. With him out who's gonna be the field goal holder. The O.U NEEDS TO ROTATE THOSE BACKS. They don't block to well. The back end will get exposed after they watch film from that game. The defensive line played good.#5 stands out. GO BOBCATS.
