winning and modern technology. When I was attending Ohio University I used to go sit in my car and pray that WMPO in Middleport wasn't carrying a high school or OSU game in hopes of getting a static filled signal to hear the mellow tones of Dick Schorr. Fast forward 20 years later and as I was leaving Nashville following Ohio's win over South Florida I simply opened up the "Tune-in" app on my smart phone and listened to WXTQ. Graduates are now able to stay connected and interest in the Ohio teams doesn't end once you leave Athens.

I personally feel this why Ohio has a tremendous opportunity to covert the great student enthusiasm into involved alumni that will continue to follow and hopefully financially support Bobcat Athletics.

In the past only "Mid-Major" (hate the term) teams such as Marshall, Toledo, etc were about compete with the non stop national chatter surrounding only the Big Ten's, ACCs and SEC's of the world.  The playing field has leveled and schools that are located on the fringes of media markets and have very large alumni basis, like Ohio, have a consistent conduit to reach those grads!

Winning might have a bit to do with that too..............

Live video streams of most basketball games, football on ESPN/2/3 almost every week, radio streams for everything else, Bobcat Showcase, the ohiobobcats.com coverage... it was mighty easy to follow the 'Cats from CT this year, and a ton of credit for that has to go to Evan, Russ, and all the students who keep that department (and WOUB/WATH/WXTQ) humming.  It is night and day compared to when I got to school, which wasn't so long ago.

Winning is definately the most important thing. But technology now allows alumni and fans to be more involved! In the old days it was box scores in the morning paper and no more.

Midweek games on TV rule.  All those naysayers who thought this was a bad idea (mostly on the idea that attending life would be crimped) owe me an apology and cash.  I pointed this as an obvious plus from day 1.  It is part and parcel (recruiting!) of winning.

I think a lot of the interest is coming from good local media coverage and bobcatattack.com of player stories. Fans are able to maintain a better personal connection with the players from recruiting season on to the NFL draft. If you think about it many of the players have a seven year relationship with the players, senior year of HS, five seasons in the NFL and then a year in NFL camps. The full cycle doesn't apply to all players I know but for quite a few it does. Compare that relationship to your average NFL squad in these days of free agency and you start to pull in a lot of people disaffected by all the turnover and selfishness in pro sports.

Midweek games ruled this year because the NBA lockout got them put on ESPN. I know when I flip through channels, I check ESPN to see what's on, but generally don't check 2 or U nearly as frequently. During a typical year where the games never sniff ESPN, it's not nearly as good/useful.  IMO, that lockout was a godsend that led to a MASSIVE increase in audience.

Could be that we benefited from the lack of NBA.  But we wouldn't have benefited therefrom if we had not been scheduled for midweek ESPN.

When the midweek games were first announced, there was a goodly bit of unhappineness about midweekness.  The fact that we've developed a program that can win those games, can take advantage of the midweek national TV slot,  also has zero to do with NBA or lack of NBA.
