Everyone needs to read Arkley's blog, where he goes through each position in great detail....

A couple of things....

(1) Trae Clark may not show up in Fall, still trying to get eligible. We may have to place him at a JUCO :( 

(2) William Johnson is our new OLB, and did receive five offers from PAC-10 schools. He signed to Arizona State but left after the coaching change, following Williams here from New Mexico State (who recruited him). This defense is going to be sick in a few years.

(3) Matt Waters is apparently very good, even despite my initial analysis that he shouldn't have been offered (thank god I'm not involved with our team in any capacity). He might end up the starter in the slot.

OK, that is all, just go read it!

N'Goumo has big play ability and I noticed he played in the spring game.....he and Bussey and Dovell should be able to  provide some big plays for us this year......maybe some of the true freshman as well.

Solich mentioned both punters and long snapper during an interview with Russ during the spring game. As for punters, he mentioned that Venham has been the top punter so far. He also said just in the last few days they've started Vick punting and he has shown very good potential at it.

In terms of Vick trying out as a punter: correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that Frank has been better at moving players around and finding a niche for them than most coaches.   A lot of coaches, it seems to me, get a sort of stereotype set in their mind about a player's "natural position" and are less likely to try figure out other ways that a player can contribute.  Now, all coaches do this shuffling around to some extent, it just seems to me that Frank is on the high end of the bell curve here.  Do others share my perception of this?

I'm a little concerned that our lone backup QB is thinking about punting! He's one play away from being The Man! The punting sitch' must not be so hot.

A fine trait.

There will need to be a 'Solich coaching tree' thread.  Seems like we have depth there too!

Thats true, but maybe Frank is thinking that it might ad a little wrinkle in the playbook? If our second string qb who is very mobile and has a good arm is also kicking, return teams might have to pause before they drop back to block....

Yup yup. The inverse of Hershey: instead of lining up in punt formation and reading the D for a fake, you line up in the shotgun on 4th and read the D on a quick kick.

I have mentioned several time that Vick was a very good punter/placekicker in high school, as well as being the QB. I believe he's also the holder for Weller, so he is keeping busy. I have heard he's a very intelligent kid, and a hard worker, so it should be OK. I'd sure rather have him punting and holding for kicks than have him on the kickoff coverage team, like some other backup QBs have been.

Miami and Zac D has done this on several times when they WERE playing on TV and worked effectively especially when inside the 40. 

I have wondered why coaches don't use punters like a golfer uses different clubs depending on the situation.  Why have your long kicker practice pooch shots?  For the shorter punts needed, get someone who has good hands and a good drop, kicks it really high and is consistent--but no matter how hard they try they cannot kick it into the endzone unless they get a great bounce--kind of like the lob wedge. 

Now if Vick is a guy who can do it than there are even more stealth and gives a better chance of the defense being kept honest.

Just to be clear, Vick is a very versatile athlete. In high school Vick was a punter and a place kicker as well as a QB. His senior year he averaged 42.1 yards a kick on 39 punts, with a long one of 71 yards, plus he added 3 field goals, a long one of 46 yards. One service named him  all-State in 2010, not as a QB, but as a kicker. He was also name all-state as a punter by an Omaha paper. (you have to select 2010 on that link). Here's an article from his Junior year where he says "I was messing around at practice and they noticed I could kick PATs and field goals. I've always punted". In that article his coach also says "I think he could be an all-state defensive back. He can do a lot of things that are amazing." He was also All-state in Basketball and had scholarship offers for basketball, too. Here's a nice article about him from when he signed. I have said a couple times before that he might end up in the running for the punting job.

So I keep thinking about this Vick as a punter thing, and I hear that the Jets are going to us Tebow as the personal protector on punts, and then I think about how T^2 isn't afraid to throw a block, and I wonder.....maybe, just maybe, there's a chance we get to see a modified A-11 this year, because OH GOD YES PLEASE YES A-11 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE YES YES YES!!!

As usual this is a very educational forum.  I didn't know what an A-11 offense was.  So I found the wikipedia entry and read it.  So, now I'm an expert!   Thanks, guys, for increasing my FQ.

It's a nice thought, BUT...

Since we are starting the season with only one quarterback with playing time, and only two with any time in the program, I would say that precarious situation takes precedence over something clever we can do on punts.

C'mon man....practicalities be damned! This is an academic exercise. Can you run an offense with 6 WRs and 2 QBs on the field at the same time, when the only limitation is that it has to be from a formation that can only be used "when it is obvious that a kick may be attempted"? We don't know the answer to that question, and it would be a disservice not only to college football but to our entire educational system in general. And I put it to you, DFC -- isn't that a disservice to our entire American society?

You can do to me whatever you want, but I'm not going to sit here and let you shortchange the entire United States of America! Gentlemen!

Actually the A-11's inventor (whose name escapes me at the moment) has created a modified version of the system to be every down legal at all levels of (American) football (or at least thats how I read it). It abides by ineligible-lineman numbering rules. As I understand it, it makes up for the loss of scrimage-kick flexibility by making the quarterback/passer a down-lineman. He's ineligible downfield, but he can still receive the handoff or a pitch (provided he turns away from the line of scrimage) and make a forward pass.
