Do these guy get any money for singing as free agents or is it more like an unpaid tryout?

They get paid a pretty decent sum for attending training camp.

They do get money for signing but the last Collective Bargaining Agreement really limits that. For 2011, the entire signing bonus pool for UDFA's was $75,000. It will be adjusted in 2012 based upon the same percentage the rookie pool is increased. Still, not a lot of money split 15-20 ways. It used to be teams would offer around $20K for guys they really wanted but it would be tough to do that now. I think they also earn a salary but I'm not sure if that's based upon the minimum ($273K) or practice squad money ($5,700 per week).

Some guys, like Strum, will get mini-camp invites. If a team likes what they see, then they'll sign you. There's not much money there but you'll find out pretty quickly if you're NFL material. In either case, I'd say it's worth seeing it through to try to fulfill your dream of playing in the NFL. The real world will still be there waiting for you.

I think it's nice that guys get money for their entertainment ability as well as their football skills.

Isn't 5700 per week about the same as 273k annual?  (or is the whole 273 guaranteed no matter what?)

Rookies are often forced to sing their alma mater

From what I found, Ted is right.  They get around $3,000 - $5,000 to sign.  Then they get $800 a week while in camp(s).  If they make the team or taxi, they get the minimum.  It is not guaranteed.  Only paid for the weeks they are actually "employed."  If they get cut from the squad all dollars go away.

Still a good sum of money to make out of college, even if just for a a couple of months, especially for the chance to chase your dreams and an opportunity to make way more. Hopefully our guys get that.

Absolutely.  Paid to chase your dream.  Good luck to all.  Also remember that when they are at a minicamp or training camp all room and board is taken care of by the team.

I think it's paid over 17 weeks. The $273K was for a rookie not on the Active/Inactive list while it's $390K if you're on that list. So I probably should have used the $390K. If you're on the Practice Squad for 17 weeks, you would get around $90K. Compared to $390K if you're on the Active/Inactive roster for 17 weeks.
