And, you don't want to be around a female ginkgo tree at the wrong time of the year. When its seeds ripen they really stink. One wag described the smell as a cross between rotten apricot and vomit. Another described it as smelling like fresh dog shit. For the record, the old asylum grounds in Athens had a very large, very old female ginkgo tree. I believe that it only produces the stinky fruit when it is fertilized by a male ginkgo, though I'm not sure about this point. Therefore, being a bisexual tree like a buckeye can be a lot less malodorous than a single-sex tree like a ginkgo. Bottom line: Buckeyes > Gingkos. Now, just who are the Fighting Ginkgoes, anyway?
