Rivals.com has their countdown going now. They are up to through 71 with three MAC teams remaining. Ohio, Northern Illinois, and Western Michigan.  They have a lower opinion of the MAC this year so I doubt any MAC team will be rated as high as Ohio was in the Sentinel.

Actually, they have NIU at 82, behind even Fiami, who they have at 80.

I think it's a credit to the strength of the program that they are ranking this high, despite the heavy losses.

Orlando Sentinel lists S Gerald Moore is a "key loss"...is he actually not returning or is this a typo?

Gerald is still on the roster and Phil Steele projects him 3rd tm All-MAC.

When one of OUr guys busts out and starts making a mark in the NFL, does that knock us up ten spots in all these ratings?

I'd bet that the number one driver of high placement for teams in the bottom half is--did you win more than you lost last season AND did the QB have a good year and is he returning?  I imagine these pundits don't scratch too deeply into the rosters.  This team isn't light years ahead of the last 3-4 teams BUT this team has as among it's top players,  the record setting QB and these writers are looking at that.

Definitely the writers look at the returning QBs, and that is a big factor in their preseason ratings. In fact, it's too big of a factor, if you ask me. Writers tend to highly rate teams that have flashy players back, and not give as much credit for returning players at positions like the line, who are every bit as important. I think Ohio is going to be very good this year, but not just because of Tettleton. I think the returning defense is going to be very, very good, and the offensive line will be too, and that will make up for any weaknesses elsewhere.

Note that Rivals, who named Tettleton as the 99th best player in America is down to 56 in their countdown, and ....no Ohio so far.

I'm betting that they don't dig deep enough to consider depth.  We used to have solid 1's and not much in the way of back-ups.  Now, we're pretty solid all the way through.

Now, it's time for some student-athletes to prove themselves to be stars.  That's the only thing that's really keeping us from being right at the top.

Huguenin has us in at 55, which is fairly realistic.  I liked his analysis.  He didn't put T2 as the key player, instead focusing on RB Ryan Boykin.  I think the keys this year will be the backs and receivers; if they produce, they'll take some pressure off T2 to carry the load.  And notice he has Penn State at 53!!!!

I agree. Tettleton had a great year, don't get me wrong, but we lost 2 receivers who caught anything East of Richland Ave.

So, per his rankings, the first game will be #55 Ohio at #53 Penn State "which could be an interesting matchup", as he puts it.

And, for what it's worth, here's Dan Vasta's ranking from Bleacher Report:

OHIO -- 53
NIU -- 57
Toledo -- 63
WMU -- 69
Fiami -- 83
CMU -- 94
BGSUcks -- 98
EMU -- 100
BSU -- 107!!!!
KSU -- 108
Buffalo -- 109
Akron -- 123 (worse than three of the 1AA transition teams)
UMass -- 124

Penn State -- 36
Terd -- 85
NMSU -- 116

And Temps -- 106!!!!!!!!!! (By far the lowest ranking for them)
