The portal closed yesterday, I believe. There were concerns we could still lose a couple of players. Anyone know?

Per the recruiting forum, Ohio did add a couple of players form the portal:
Dane Jackson, an OL from NTSU:
https://www.bobcatattack.com//messageboard/topic.asp?From...

William Hough, a LB/Edge from Liberty:
https://www.bobcatattack.com//messageboard/topic.asp?From...
Kaci Seegars, William Hough is the HS he attended.

Kadin Beler - QB (DNP)
Kylen McCracken - DL - (played in every game, 8 total tackles) --> MARSHALL
Denzel Daxon - DL (Played in 8 games this year, only 2 total tackles) --> ILLINOIS
Nathanial Vakos - K (3rd team Freshman All-American) --> WISCONSIN
Cannon Blauser - LB (116 career tackles, 1 sack) --> SOUTH DAKOTA
Kyle Kelly - LB (45 career tackles, .5 sacks)
Jamison Collier - S --> EAST TENNESSEE STATE
Tyler Mullins - S (Appeared in 5 games, 3 Total Tackles) --> UT MARTIN
CJ Hankins - LB (DNP) --> SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY (NAIA)

Walter Reynolds - S - HOLY CROSS --> OHIO
Ches Jackson - OL - COLORADO STATE --> OHIO
Christian Hilton - WR (285 receiving yards, 2 TDs) - CITADEL --> OHIO
Jack Kenneally - TE - YOUNGSTOWN ST --> OHIO...

Also added to Ohio:
Tristan Cox - DE/LB - Purdue --> Ohio
Dane Jackson OL - NTSU --> Ohio
Kaci Seegars - LB - Liberty --> Ohio

It remains to be seen how much the new players will contribute, but on the whole this looks a net positive. Yes, the loss of Vakos will hurt, but Ohio appears to have added 2 very talented Freshmen kickers, so I think Ohio will be fine there. Reynolds seems likely to make an immediate impact, and some of the others may, as well.

6’3”, 255 pounds Soph from KY.

"Cox is a former three-star recruit that did a little bit of everything for his high school team. He had 94 tackles, 20 for a loss, and three sacks with an interception and a fumble recovery as a junior and added 504 yards and eight touchdowns rushing and 252 yards and seven TDs through the air, via Rivals.

Cox brings good size to the linebacker position and could be a bit of a hybrid linebacker/rush end by the time his career is over. He should play a bit more in 2022."

He put on nearly 40 pounds between his freshman and sophomore seasons, so you know the kid is a worker.

Did Nigel Drummond enter the portal and then return to the Bobcats?

I also think we have:
Jeremiah Burton DL Ohio-->Slippery Rock
Vance Van Every OL Ohio-->UT Martin

Now the list apparently looks like:
LEAVING:
Kadin Beler - QB (DNP)
Kylen McCracken - DL - (played in every game, 8 total tackles) --> MARSHALL
Denzel Daxon - DL (8 games last year, 2 total tackles) --> ILLINOIS
Nathanial Vakos - K (3rd team Freshman All-American) --> WISCONSIN
Cannon Blauser - LB (116 career tackles, 1 sack) --> SOUTH DAKOTA
Kyle Kelly - LB (45 career tackles, .5 sacks) -->E. Kentucky
Jamison Collier - S --> EAST TENNESSEE STATE
Tyler Mullins - S (Appeared in 5 games, 3 Total Tackles) --> UT MARTIN
CJ Hankins - LB (DNP) --> SIENA HEIGHTS UNIVERSITY (NAIA)
Jeremiah Burton DL --> Slippery Rock

Jack Kenneally - TE - YOUNGSTOWN ST --> OHIO
Tristan Cox - DE/LB - Purdue --> Ohio
Dane Jackson OL - NTSU --> Ohio
Kaci Seegars - LB - Liberty --> Ohio
Jared Wheatley -P/K - Vanderbilt --> Ohio
Miles Fleming -CB - Minnesota --> Ohio
Kwame Sutton -DL- Austin Peay --> Ohio

I expected Ohio to primarily look to add players at DT, S, and LB. They did add Reynolds at S, and Seegars and Cox at LB. The surprise to me is that after losing four defensive tackles (Caesar, McCracken, Daxon, Dugan) Ohio did not add any defensive tackles at all except for Freshman Kobi Gorman (6-3, 265) and Kwame Sutton. I presume that the coaches know their needs better than fans do, but it wasn't what I expected.

Kwame Sutton signed with Ohio. And I believe Kyle Kelly ended up at Eastern Kentucky.

Cox from Purdue is over 260 and could see time anywhere along the D line.

Interior wise Mathews and Buell are back and Mathews is a load. On the roster guys like Farrier and Henderson and Middlebrook need to step up.

The above mentioned Gorman could be a find.

Agreed on Matthews and Buell. Also given how little guys like Daxon and McCracken played last year I wouldn’t be surprised if Nowinsky wants more athletic bodies (as opposed to big run-stuffers) on his line. Guys like Vonnie Watkins, Bradley Weaver, Jack McCrory, Bryce Dugan, and Shane Bonner all had success last year and none of those guys are wide bodies you typically think of on the DL.

Makes sense to add guys like Cox, Sutton, and Seegars then. More LB/DE types to rush the passer.

Add in Reynolds, Fleming, and Pearson to replace Drake, Floyd, and Sanders. D-Backs are looking good.
Add a few freshmen LBs to replace backups Blauser and Kelly who left.
Add Ches Jackson and Dane Jackson to replace Van Every and Brody Rogers who graduated.
Add two freshmen kickers and an SEC punter to replace Vandenberg, Weiland, and Vackos.

Seems like we filled the holes we needed to.
What am I missing?

You're absolutely right. Now we hope for some cohesion on defense, DL depth and everyone stays healthy.

I know the coaches know a lot more than we do but I'm not sure we do have DL depth. It has me a little concerned.

In the days of redshirting with limited PT as a freshman, extra COVID years, and inconsistent class designation between programs it is hard to know exactly who had another year of eligibility left, let alone exactly how many scholarships we have left and if there might be another couple of players coming in. I know we had a few guys like Kai Caesar who graduated and went pro with a year of eligibility left, which we know about, and we probably do know everyone that left and entered via the portal or high school recruiting As far as the guys who just graduated and left Athens with eligibility left, or just quit college, or stayed in college and just quit football I doubt we know much. Without a full-time beat writer these days compiling that list would be close to impossible.

Looks like the NCAA officially shortened the transfer window.

Football will open the day after the College Football Playoff teams are announced and will stay open for 30 days.

The next period would open April 15 to April 30, which will remain the same with the new changes.

Graduate students are still able to enter their name in the transfer portal at any time without penalty.
