Seriously, in terms of total victories:
1. Don Peden 121-46-11 .711    1924-46
2. Bill Hess 108-91-4 .542   1958-77
3. Frank Solich  50-40-0 .555 2005-present

He'll have to coach a long time to catch Hess. Even if he wins 10 a year, it will take 6 more years, which is possible, and perhaps 8 to catch Peden.

in terms of winning percentage (min 20 games):
1. Peden 121-46-11 .711
2. Art McFarland 13-10-1 .562    1906-08
3. Russ Finsterwald  13-10-1  .562   1920-22
4. Mark Banks 22-17-2  .561 1913-17
5. Solich 50-40-0  .555 2005-present

After this year, Solich should be in 2d. It may be a long time, if ever, before he catches Don Peden.

I personally don't put as much stock into the win totals because those Peden numbers are from two eras ago (maybe more?). The game, competition, and talent distribution has changed in many ways.

I view Frank as the best because of the program's turnaround during his tenure. A testament to his values, the stability and depth of his teams have grown slowly but surely over an extended period of time. He never relied on a "star" athlete to find success. His teams have been flat out well coached.

I think this program has become so stable in fact, that because of the weak schedule over the next four years, and the rock solid foundation Frank has created, OHIO wins at least 10 games each year from 2012-2015.

I also count his Nebraska coaching career towards his greatness at OHIO. He studied under the tutalige of Tom Osborne (one of the greatest). He's been a coach of the year twice of one of the premier conferences at the time(Big 12). He's coached in a National Championship game.

It's kind of a different debate, but if, let's say, Randy Moss played for OHIO for only one game. Would he be the greatest Ohio reciever? I personally don't think so, but there is some credit to be earned for merely having an association at a position and letting the rest of someone's career do the talking.

+1 on the Solich Field vote.

In all my time on BA, I've never agreed more with any post than this. Coach Solich is #1 and I for one believe the IPF should be named ater him. Got Frank?

That might be an even better idea. I imagine who ever is in charge of naming it would be open to the idea?

I assume when you donate 8m to an 11.1m project, a naming staff isn't hired...

Normally I'd agree, but the Walter family already have two buildings on campus named after them. They would probably see the value of having a name like 'Solich' associated with the University, especially for future football recruiting, it'd serve as a constant reminder of the man who made it happen. Gives us a rich history, thoughts?

I agree that naming the MPF (aka IPF) after Frank would be a great move on the part of the university.   However, I disagree with saying that Frank is now the "greatest Ohio football coach of all time."  I think that smacks of the error that historians call "presentism."  Though I'm too young, believe it or not, to have seen Peden coached teams, I heard many stories about his legendary teams as a young child.  If you look at some of the teams he played, and you know something about the relative strengths of those teams at the time, he in most years played a very demanding schedule.  One story that locals of that vintage always liked to tell was the two times he took his Bobcat squad  back to his alma mater -- Illinois --  and beat them with excellent defense and just enough offense (6-0).  The two times he lost at Illinois weren't mentioned as frequently. Frank is a great football coach and one of the best in the country at the moment, but he needs more victories at Ohio to declare him the best ever, IMHO.

Go Frank!   Go Ohio!

...and it's hard to argue against a coach who rang up a national title, mythical or not, regardless of division.

I'm never, ever going to knock Solich. He takes a back seat to no one.  Name anything you want for him today and I'll applaud but let's wait for the entire story to unfold before ranking him.  (I'm sorry, Coach!  )

What??? That can't be right.....

I did some math - To catch Peden in terms of winning percentage, Solich would need to average 11-3 records for 14 more years. If he can average 12-2, he can do it in only 7 years. Averaging 13-1 records, he can catch Peden in only 5 years. In terms of winning percentage, Solich should be number 2 after this year, and that's where he's likely to end up.

Thanks for the ageism!

Seriously, winning percentage or number of wins is not the total story.  If Frank gets us national ranking in successive years and we land a BCS Bowl in one of those years, I might be willing to give him the coveted OCF "Best Ohio Coach Ever Award."  For now, he's in my top three.

Just to stir the pot a little, there's another former coach worthy of having his name on a facility, who, to the best of my knowledge, has not yet been accorded that honor and that would be "Gentleman Jim" Snyder.

+1  The Snyder Convocation Center has a nice ring to it.

From 1929, here's the text at the bottom:
Coach Don C. Peden is in his sixth year as head coach of Ohio University football teams and there is nothing but praise for him. He took charge of a team back in 1924 that had nothing to mark it as being above a last place delegation. Within two weeks however, Coach Peden had a team which was fighting for every game and since that time his Bobcats have always been con-
tenders. He is a graduate of University of Illinois and is the friend of everyone.
