Yeah...sorta.....losing their 3rd string tackle may not damage their confidence.

Losing depth still hurts.

Everyone thinks that their entire team is going to be healthy all season.  At the rate that Penn State is losing their depth positions, a few injuries could put the team in a very, very troubling situation.

Hell with their confidence, I like what it does for ours (as in, they're down 8, without getting into what sort of impact a given player might have made). Plus, hurts their depth, hurts what they can bring to bear in fall camp, and on the practice squad, and could tip a guy who is on the fence into a decision.

Penn State Transfer Tracker

They list Redd and Fera as significant impact losses, Fortt as a medium significance. Bolden, Haplea and Pollard as minimum. Nowicki as none.

I'm assuming if Brown goes, he'll be listed as significant.

Justin Brown, Penn State's leading returning WR, to Oklahoma per ESPN.

Penn State's offense ranked 95th last year.  With Brown's departure, Penn State has lost 50% of its scoring from last year's team.  Pretty significant.

I went for a peruse of the two Penn State Messageboards:

http://bwi.rivals.com/forum.asp?sid=890&fid=36&style=2

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=157&f=1395

The only thread dedicated to the OHIO game concerned attendance (some delusional fan threw out the number 200,000 lol).

Just based on off hand comments, the most pessimistic of fan over there seems to think at best the Bobcats will give them a tough game, but OHIO will still lose. Most, even with all of their ltransfers, believe this will be an easy win for Penn State.

It's just ridiciulous; much more so than the Georgetown and Michigan fans of our NCAA tournament victories.

MAC teams don't beat Big 10 teams on a regular basis.

If I'm a PSU fan I'm optimistic about the defense......not as much with the offense....losing receivers and the best running back coupled with QB's that haven't shown much so far.

Their defense will include three 240 pound linebackers that can hit and run.....d-line of average size and DB's with some experience.

Don't get me wrong....I think we have  good chance of winning....especially after watching the IPB last night.

Over confident thinking on their part....sure.....ridiculous thinking....not so much.

Doc,

With all due respect, their thinking is ridiculous. It makes sense; but it does not make good sense.

They may have played MAC teams in the past (including the loss to Toledo cited above). But they've never lost 9 players, include several starters, the week before fall camp. They've never played a MAC team that had 10 wins the previous year that also returns their starting QB (3000+ yards, 10 picks).

Their weakness (wideout/QB) plays into OUr strength (secondary). Their inexperience (secondary), is OUr's to exploit (Tettleton). It's all right out there on paper for them to see.

We'll open as less than a touchdown under dogs to Penn State on September 1 (I doubt it's ever even been close to that against lowly MAC oppponents). It is ridiculous that they are not giving us any respect. It has been duly noted. I'll certainly remember their arrogance after the game.

I took a quick look at their boards and didn't see any sign of arrogance. I saw plenty of distraction, however, and for obvious reason. They have a lot on their minds, and the moment, and the Ohio game is not something the fans are thinking about just yet. Keep in mind that it's still many weeks away. Ohio doesn't have the off-the-field issues to worry about, so the game gets more attention here. When we get to the final week, I'm sure that Penn State fans will turn their attention to Ohio, and at that time you can decide if they are arrogant or not.

I think the loss of Brown hurts worse than Redd. McGloin has never impressed me, and losing his most reliable WR isn't going to help. Redd was good, but my read is Penn State can more easily replace him than Brown. So, I think our keys in this game are:

1. Stop the run and make McGloin throw on 3rd and long.
2. Play up-tempo and put the Penn State D on its heels.
3. Protect the ball.

Don't get me wrong....I think we have an excellent chance to win this game.  What we can't do is to roll into Happy Valley with the "they lost 3 starters and a few players so they suck"  attitude.

How big of a chip do you think PSU has on their shoulder?  Sure...didn't help OSU last year much...but I think the Nittany Lions are more than pissed off.  As a former coach I hated to play pissed off chips on their shoulders nothing to lose teams....loved coachin em just hated to play against that kind of team. They also may consider every game their bowl game.

With that said I think the WR and RB losses are huge and that we have a better QB.  As mentioned above if we can force turnovers and limit ours we will win.

GO CATS
