Watching the Bengals game and noticed the new turf. The turf at Peden is starting to get a little age. Last year I began to notice it was faded. What's the normal life span of the newer turf? I am guessIng Peden should be due for a change. It could happen when the IPF turf is put down.

Jim Shause himself mentioned in a student senate meeting that the life of turf is 10 years. The turf we have now is at it's tenth year. In other words, it must be replaced after this season, according to Jim.

Simply politicking to justify more student fees going his direction.  Unfortunately senate continues to fall for it.

The Swankster!  The G&W Club is dead and it was the right thing to do...move on, buddy.

Sorry if the truth hurts VOR but I continue to be amazed by Senate and the things that they believe.  Not talking turf here but fees and policies in general.  The stuff they "approve" and "endorse" would never have flown 30 or 40 years ago.  Of course 30 or 40 years ago we weren't racking up $100,000 student loans either or living off of our moms' and dads' credit cards.

And speaking of tailgating, Tailgate Park is a mess.  Almost a third of it was recently "reseeded."  No way will this be ready for the September 8th game so plan accordingly.

Any discussion of the playing surface in Peden brings back bad memories of the reseeding debacle that was then to be the latest, greatest, grass surface ever (preceding this turf).  Somebody really dropped the ball there (no pun intended) at a time when the AD couldn't afford to eat a $700 - 800 thousand loss.

It bothered me more because I believe that football is meant to be played on grass, if not a muddy infield.

Yes, that was what was then known as Purdue Prescription Grass, or something like that, if I recall.  Do you remember who stepped in and bailed the AD out with a gift to pay for the new turf? It was Mrs. Jody Phillips.  A grand old lady, who loved Ohio and Ohio athletics.  She is sorely missed!

The Richmond Spiders replaced their field turf this summer after eight years.

It appears that they still had to do a lot of prep reworking the originial base of sand/gravel and adding some new material in the base.

It appears their strands of "grass" are much longer than what is left of the turf at Pedan.

From what I know there are two basic types of field turf.  One is the longer blades and one is the shorter.   I've been told by a friend at "The Motz Group"  that the longer blade turf is usually selected when both football and soccer are played on the same field.  Seems the longer blades reflect more real life conditions for soccer games and the way the ball reacts off the turf.  Peden was a the shorter version from the start.  However, it's probably lost some height over the years.

Artificial turf has come a long way over the years. The only artificial turf I ever actually personally experienced was tartan turf, which was before they were infilled. My vivid recollection was that, when wet, it was unbelievably slippery. As I recall, back then, after a rain they would drive a tractor over it dragging a huge squeegee to get the water off. The modern turfs, with rubber/sand and built in drainage have to be a huge improvement.  They apparently still make the tartan turf, and use it for golf now.

You bet it's come a long way.  I used to have a square of Astro Turf from a mid '60's visit to the Eighth Wonder of the World (in a cornfield outside of Houston).   It was basically a 1/4 inch slab of rubber with one of those cheap green indoor outdoor rugs from your porch glued on top.  Lay that down on concrete, voila, instant playing surface.  I don't think they even had cutouts for the bases back in those days.

According to The Athens News, state funds have arrived for a number of campus capital projects and the last one on the list is $1.1 million for turf.

Quiz What risk-taking Coach was the first to authorize the installation of field turf for his program? Obviously the installation was successful, and many other installations soon followed.

Close, but no cigar. Indeed the first major football installation was at the college level. It was installed in 1999, and the NFL did not follow  for a couple more years.

Solich was 1998-2003....assuming it was Nebraska who had the first Field Turf in 1999, must have been Solich.
