On The Mark on ESPN.com is a segment during which Scott Van Pelt moderates discussion and predictions from Kirk Herbstreit and Todd Blackledge. At the finish of the 3-minute segment, Van Pelt asks Herbstreit about a "stub your toe game." Herbstreit responds, "I'm going with Ohio University and Penn State. It's going to be an emotional day. I think everybody's just kind of pulling for Penn State, just watching from afar. But Ohio University with Tyler Tettleton, Frank Solich, they're not just going to walk in and be a team that they're just gonna say, 'Hey, beat us.' Penn State's gonna have to beat them and earn it."

Okay, so the OSU guy won't call us "Ohio," but ...

He called us Ohio University, which is who we are. We're NOT Ohio Northern. We're NOT Ohio Wesleyan. We're NOT Ohio Dominican. We're NOT Ohio Christian. And we're NOT Ohio State. So Ohio University seems accurate.

The fact we we're discussed is what's relevant IMO.

Thanks for the link Cat4Ever. I work too much and wouldn't have caught this one. Nice to hear OHIO being mentioned on some of these national shows - no matter what they call us. Keep winning and OHIO will be branded on the minds of national psyche.

Only if he referred to his alma mater as Ohio State University, not just as Ohio State.  Consistency is all that I ask, and you usually don't get it from Cowtown folks.  [I will say that I have heard Kirk refer to us as Ohio on occasion.  Maybe, he just needs a friendly reminder now that football season is upon us once again.]

Edit: please note in your example you didn't feel the need to add "University" to the end of any of the other schools you mentioned that have "Ohio" in their name.  Why treat Olde Ohio any different?

Jerry86, by extension of your explanation, our opponent on Saturday should have been referred to as The Pennsylvania State University. That said, it would be quite natural for "Herbie" to refer to us as Ohio University considering his roots.

One could not sing praises to the great Ohio football program early in Solich's tenure, but in several more years of runs like Ohio is having many more people will take notice of the program.  Likewise, about 5 generations of Ohio Alumni calling ourselves Ohio U, OU, Ohio University and wearing gear to match will take some time to limit the use to OHIO--old habits die hard.  I think Herbie can be given a pass as other than the Fight Song, the "for old Ohio" I have had limited use of saying OHIO.

What gauls me most is the Ohio pols that pushed through the State's official Rock song.  In no way should  "What your daddy do" be associated with a state that is trying to promote world class education.  But certainly some guys crooning, "Down around the corner, half a mile from here, see them long trains run and watch them disappear"  "Without love,....where would you be now?"  This song has industry, geography, capitalism, physics,  psychology, biology and you could probably find a religious angle too--now that is a song that a state dedicated to higher education should throw its weight behind.

GO OHIO, BEAT PENN STATE

I have stewed on this for a couple of days and just couldn't hold it in any longer.

Herbstreit quote: "It's going to be an emotional day.  I think everybody's kinda' pulling for Penn State."

What the hell is in that dope he's smoking in Nashville?!

The only people "pulling" for Penn State are the alumni, staff, faculty and long time fans that either feel that Sandusky's actions weren't reprehensible or of a scale that warranted NCAA sanctions, are clouded by the haze of hatred created by their perceived abuse of power by the NCAA with placing them on probation (a probation that the University accepted) or are just too entrenched in the PSU mystique that their emotions won't allow them to take a step back and put things in their proper perspective.

Saturday, America becomes Bobcat Nation.
