Either myself or somebody with me has been physically threatened every time I've gone to Huntington.

Maybe you look like a flatlander!

Seriously, I've never had any experience remotely resembling that in Huntington.  The worst I can remember was one year at a Marshall game, don't think it was against Ohio, my wife and I had seats right in front of some drunken students who kept jumping up and down on the bleachers and making an awful noise and swearing like a bunch of sailors.  But, I've never had any physical threats.  We try to make at least one game a season at Marshall, even if they are not playing Ohio that year in Huntington.  When they play Ohio I always wear my Ohio gear, and I've only been greeted with friendliness by folks that I didn't know and who only saw me as a generic Ohio fan.  That is, these random folks had no idea that I also had ties to Marshall.

As a token WV resident here, along with bobcat695, have to agree that Marshall is not nearly the crucible of indiscriminate fan hate that it was 15 years ago. Really, since Leftwich was done, they have sold fewer tickets and been far more subdued. Has gone a long way toward taking the starch out of the sails of the Marshall fan stereotype.

Nobody really wants to throw airline bottles of liquor at your girlfriend over the play of Stan Hill or some such.

PSU fans were 98% great, Thursday-Saturday, with the exception being a cab driver Friday night who was still pretty committed to rolling up his pants legs and eating ice cream named after the former coach. The rest were kind, helpful, friendly and inquisitive about what we were bringing to town. Also, really solid zoning and code enforcement.

Contrast w/Marshall - I find myself seriously wondering about personal/family safety as I consider buying tickets.................

I didn't go to Marshall for a long time because of the crap I heard (from both Ohio and other MAC fans) they give you. But I went in 2010 and it was fine. We stopped by bobcat695's tailgate before the game which was right on the main drag that led to the stadium. Thousands people walking past and were very friendly. After the tough loss, not one ill word was said as we seemingly had to wade through everyone in attendance to get back to our car. Definitely am considering going on the 15th.

We took some gentle ribbing when we first showed up to tailgate, but after that all Penn St fans were great hosts. We didn't bring a grill to make hot food and were invited to eat with Penn St fans at two different surrounding tailgates. Managed to come together with our mutual hate for the school up in Columbus.
