Thanks for the feedback, I will step away from the computer and internet.  I just wonder if Mr Fox and Graham would have posted their comments if they knew what the O'Briens have to live with everyday.  Too often people just pound evil diatribe from their keyboard without looking how it will be received and perceived or trying to understand where the other side is coming from.  If Mr O'Brien came off as gruff, then as a PSU alum, take my apologies, and good luck this season.

I don't think the heart-string pulling story has much to do with the fact that BOB came across as arrogant both before and after the game and did not represent PSU in the greatest light in that regard.

BOB quote before the game:

Q.  What do you see in Ohio University?  What concerns you, and what is your team going to have to do to be effective and win the game Saturday?
BILL O'BRIEN:  Well, this is an excellent football team.  This is Coach Solich's eighth year in the program, and this is probably his best football team.  This is a team that was in the MAC championship game last year and has huge aspirations for this year.
Offensively it starts with their quarterback.  This guy is an excellent athlete, Tyler Tettleton.  He can run, he can throw, he's definitely a dual‑threat guy, and he just poses a lot of problems.  He's definitely somebody that we have to do the best we can to contain.
They've got four or five receivers that we think are all very, very good players.  They've got a tight end corps that we're going to have to do a good job of keeping track of, and they've got two running backs there that have a chance to have a really good year for them.  Offensively they're a very, very dangerous team.
Defensively they're very well coached, they're tough, they're sound.  They've got a lot of returning players back there on the defense.  They do a lot of different things.  They don't just line up and give you the same look two plays in a row.  So we're going to have to be on top of our game and try to string some plays together and do the best we can on Saturday.

BOB quote after the game:

“Ohio is a very, very good football team; a veteran team, coached by an excellent head coach and they beat us. We lost to the better team today.”

Doesn't sound arrogant to me.  BTW, I rewatched the handshake last night and I saw a coach say to the other coach something to the effect of "Good game" or Good Luck".

Agree Kingkub....and thanks for the insight about his special needs son....I occasionally substitute teach for a special needs class and those parents get all my respect.

Some on here (myself included) saw a clip of O'brien poking fun at our tackling during the Rutgers game last year....one which we lost and our tackling did suck....it came off as bulletin board material for sure.

Good luck to Penn State the rest of the year.

This would be the clip that was referred to: Clip of O'Brien before the game

I think if you watch it, you will understand why we felt he was disrespectful before the game. His first comment "sometimes they don't tackle very well" was harsh, but accurate. The next comment "they have no interest in tackling" was gratuitous sarcasm, and bulletin board material. Then, his smugness when talking about how Ohio had no film implied an arrogant expectation about what that advantage was going to gain him. It also implied a lack of respect for Ohio coaches' ability to game-plan without specific film. It did gain him some advantage, of course, as Ohio played soft on defense in the first quarter while they developed a feel for what PSU was doing, but I don't think the advantage was as great as he expected because Penn State did not generate a lot of offense after the first quarter.

While it is interesting to know about his personal problems, those don't alter the fact that when seen in public, he is responsible for the impression he makes.

Yes, I would have. I did not attack Bill O'Brien's home situation or the way he handles his family. That, of course, was basically unknowable for me, but more importantly, it is completely beside the point. Quite to the contrary, my criticism was in regard to his professional life--which is completely within bounds. Even with my criticisms, I gave him some benefit of the doubt, something you have not afforded me.

The whole thing about our views on him is tone.  What he said, on paper sans a couple comments, was coach speak, nothing wrong.  But his tone was EVERYTHING about why we have disdain for him.  It's like in texting; if a text comes to you saying something insulting, you could be infuriated.  However, the same words can be taken as a joke if you're in person to hear and see (most of human communication is non verbal, isn't it?)

And I have heartfelt sympathy for the struggles that Coach O'Brien is going through in his personal life.  But all the same, you can be a terrific dad but come off as an arrogant jerk.  His demeanor toward Ohio before the game was pretty unprofessional.

I didn't see any of the pregame comments, though I noticed a couple little things.  On the hand shake, he kind of leaned in towards Solich from a distance like he didn't want to stay for more than 2 words.  He might have said 'good game' or something very quickly before leaning back and walking away.  Sounds minor but I did notice it and I'm not an Ohio fan. Maybe that's because I'm used to coaches that say a few words before parting.  Probably wouldn't have thought that much of it, except in the post-game interview he didn't really say anything - he didn't seem comfortable or like he was ready to be asked anything about the game. He also said they have a long way to go. I sorta read that to mean that if they can lose to Ohio, they must have to improve a lot to get to where they want to be.  And given the circumstances, being a top 10 team is probably not realistic.

I think he talked highly of Ohio pre-game as part of the usual coachspeak, like Lou Holtz used to do, but didn't really think he had to worry about losing.

EDIT: On another note, I would've like to hear what Solich had to say about the game.  His analysis, especially if he could speak freely and not in coachspeak, would be very interesting.

I can see why people have this opinion of Bill O'Brien, but as with all opinions it is based on the facts at hand for the person.  I believe as more and more facts come out we will see the true picture of him.  I was intrigued by part of a column in ESPN where the columnist talked about one of his fellow colleagues that was embedded with the coach all week for our game.  To me it sounds like Bill O'Brien and the coaching staff had an idea how rough things could get but were hoping for the best, as well as some time before things started getting bad and this loss was just too hard to take at the time.  The players might be naive but I don't think the coaches are no matter what they say to keep their players believing in their team.

Quote from article: "For a program in dire need of good news, the loss to Ohio was another in a long line of fortune cookies whose message read, 'Today will be worse than yesterday'."
