I feel like we have a long way to go to get into the Big (L)East...program strength alone doesn't buy your way into a new conference, and as much as we protest, that's not going to change the fact. TV Market Share and Sponsorship has a lot to do with it all, and being in a small town in the middle of nowhere doesn't help our chances.

That being said, I would love to see Ohio move out of the MAC. We DO have a strong program right now, and we need to capitalize on that. I just don't see Schaus making that move for another 3-4 years.

Agreed, it is not going to happen. However, if we are going to move up out of the MAC [to what, I'm not sure] now is the time. Consider:

1) Strong football program, with coach that has maybe 5-year left?
2) Strong basketball program, with new coach and new contract
3) A strong AD [for once], and
4) A supporting President that just signed a five-year extension.

I think it is unlikely all these areas (top to bottom) will be aligned in 3-4 years.

Regardless, IT IS A GOOD TIME TO BE A BOBCAT!!

I don't see us going to the Big East until there is a legitimate stadium expansion/improvement plan on paper. 24,000 ain't going to cut it.

And we need to get into the Columbus media market.

Biggest downside I'm seeing is that we'd need to stop calling it the Big Least...

What has the MAC done for us lately?  Provided a fair number of wins.

As a reminder, we still have not won the MAC in football in ~40 years.

Boise State won 10 conference titles since 2000 before they ventured off into the BCS conferences.

I think we can amp ourselves up for a big game or two a year and overcome some of the size and skill deficit we face against a majority of BCS conference teams.  Maybe even 3 games a year.  But could we play week in and week out with the big boys?

Let's build ourselves up while being the big fish in the pond before we jump into the ocean.

Could we play week in and week out with the Big Boys? This is the NEW Big East, we're talking about teams like Temple, Memphis, Houston and Navy. c'mon. If the MAC is a pond, the nBE is not an ocean. It's just another pond.

+1,000!!  I could not agree with this post more!!  Exactly right-there's absolutely nothing attractive to the Big East and going there would only serve to increase our travel costs and make it more difficult for many of OUr fans to travel to away games.

At this point in time I don't see any alternative to the MAC.  Where are we going to go, that terrible mish-mash known as Conference USA?  That conference is even worse than the Big East as far as having to travel.  And it's not a step up.  The Big East as currently comprised is really no better.  The Sun Belt's on par with the MAC, or vice versa, so it's not a step up.  There is absolutely no way Ohio can hope to get in the ACC, we don't bring enough $ and TV share to that conference, plus we are woefully short as far as athletic resources go (for football).

I see where a lot of us want to leave the MAC.  OK, but wanting to leave the MAC and having better, more viable options are two different matters.  Perhaps a better option is to improve the MAC somehow.

We could start by kicking EMU out.

Are we going there again?

You surely know that WE WERE AS BAD AS  EMU FOR YEARS AND YEARS.

Don't throw stones.  These are the golden years, and I honestly never dreamed this could happen.  All it takes is a change in administrative philosophy, and all this can come crashing down.

But it's not about the last 40 years.  It's about "what have you done for me lately?" and EMU hasn't done much of anything.  The schools like OHIO and Akron are choosing to pony up and ride the football wave.  If there are schools in our conference that aren't making the commitment, it's absolutely a viable option to eliminate those schools and add ones that are both academically sound and support a strong commitment to athletics.

Big East wants to shore up the Western part of the conference so I think they will make a run at BYU, Air Force, Fresno St first... but I would love to have Ohio in the Big East... You bring more to the table the ECU or UMASS.
Stadium size is an ssue but Peden isn't that much smaller than Cincinatti's place.

Air Force has already said no for several reasons. And if they don't even have time for a press conference after a game (like at Michigan last week), how would they be able to do all the extra travel.  The AD has said they are where they should be-I'll take his word for it.  I applaud them for doing whats right for their student-athletes.

Just for the record......

My response regarding Prime Time was not aimed at us looking towards the Big East. I think in football we would be a good fit with some Expansion and Improvements in Peden.

It was aimed at the thought of aiming to become number 16 in the ACC. We would get crushed.

No, we haven't won the MAC in 40+ attempts.

UCF and Temple proved that a program doesn't need to win to get an invite.

Proof of committment and conference desperation would be primary factors in those two cases, IMHO.

So we've got that going for us.

Definitely a step up ... for Cincy.  Not sure if the MAC would take them, tho.  They do have an NBA-like b-ball team; all that's missing is guns in the locker room.

Not sure if you are serious or not, but the chances of some place freezing over are greater than Cincy joining the MAC.  If you think Cincy would want to come back to the MAC, you must be on good drugs.  Any self respecting team would be looking to get out of the MAC, not get into it!

Cincy will join out of necessity, Big 12 won't take them, ACC won't have them join; and certainly not going into the Big 10(2). The MAC is really their only fit if the Big East implodes and they want to keep playing Football.

ECU is the Akron of North Carolina schools academically.  If you have a pulse, you get in.  It will be interesting to see what UC, Temple, Rutgers, Louisville, and UCONN do over the next few years.  Football drives realignment and they are running out of dance partners.  It would be nice to grow a 16 team league with them, some of the MAC, and pieces out of C-USA and Sun Belt.

They could go back to CUSA, which began life as the Metro as a b-ball conference.  Might actually be able to win that one.

If the Big (L)east implodes and there is a new conference formed, that is even more reason why we need to be prepared to bail on the MAC.  Actually, it would be an interesting league to take UConn, Rutgers, Cincy, U of L (if they do not go Big XII), Temple, a couple of the top MAC teams and some ConfUSA.  Boise would be great, but the Smurfs are on the other end of the nation and I am not sure they would want to join, unless the new league becomes a BCS league.  Someone on another thread expressed concern about joining the Big (L)east financially.  I think last year they paid each of their members at least $5 million for being ini the league/revenue sharing.  Again, we need tobe prepared to bail A.S.A.P.!
