We made it to the railing and then chickened out, or my blue blood go the best of me.  Before Youtube none of my friends back east every really believed this happened.  Of course, they couldn't believe the $0.85 budweisers at the CI either.

My Freshman Year (1981) the Ritz restaurant used rolls of paper to create a sign on the hill across the highway that said “Ribs at Ritz”. Some students climbed the hill and changed it to “Tits at Ritz”. I remember everybody laughing watching the overweight cops trying to climb hill.

Glad I read through the posts as I would have duplicated this...Thanks 86 for specifically pointing out the year and reminding me of the cops struggling up the incline--that was homecoming.  A group of us actually hung out at The Ritz, as former Lantern proprietor, Bones and former BBall coach Mike Wren were regulars there (or maybe investors)

I wonder if the hillside anecdote was the precipitating factor in the immediate removal of any "writing" done there, no matter how innocuous.

I remember Greek letters showing up there a few times, and being brought down quite hastily, in the early 90s when Dr. Ping was still President.

He always struck me as being very Dean Wormer-esque. It was a long time before I learned how far from the truth that was.

Did not witness this myself, but I recall a friend telling me about a game he attended at Peden in the '60s during which one of the fraternities flew an extra-extra-large pair of women's panties on a staff with the words "Get in there and fight!" stiched on the seat.

Way too many memories so these are top of the head.

As a fan.
The smell of the student section after the Halloween fire.

Messages on the SR 682 hill.

When Rufus lost his head sky diving.

Yelling at QB Dennis Swearingon, "I hope it hurts!" after blowing the game against Eastern Michigan.

The backwards punt.

The chain link fence with green and white aluminum slats that used to go around the stadium.

Getting pinched in the ass by the wooden bleachers.

The game against CMU before school started that lasted over 6 hours because of a lightning storm. The Air Force Rifle Team did halftime, When the game resumed it was stupid hot and the final score was 17-17.

As a member of The 110.
The sprinkler the size of a hub cap on the 50.

The year the grass got root rot and marching in basically a big letter box and trying not to trip over the above mentioned hub cap.

Trying to cover up the smell of sewer gas with pizza boxes coming from a drain right in front of the band.

Coming back to march in '94 and standing at attention in the freezing rain against Utah State and the water going down my drum right into my non-public bits and thinking, "This is what I came back for?"

Post Game Show when the fans could come on the field.

Hat Games.

Homecoming.

The absolute honor of marching for Ronald P. Socciarielli.

Just to name a few.

Good stuff Aaron.....I think we all have similar stories......for me after the Redskin Toilet Banner it's just maybe mediocre stuff to some but to many of us these little things mean a bunch to us:

*Watching the band before they had uniforms

*Sitting in the bleachers before it was Victory Hill

*Catching 2 small rubber footballs within a few seconds while sitting in the bleachers

*Playing tackle football on the field after the game

*Watching one of OUr students bouncing one of those rubber footballs off an opposing players helmet

*Watching an old Rufus get into it with the Toledo Rocket mascot and driving his pointed rocket hat into the dirt

and a few others that I can't mention online.

I really enjoyed the time the ROTC had "Rufus" jump from the plane and land in Peden. Only problem was his head fell off about 100 feet from the ground. I use to have a photo of it before my hard drive fried. I believe it was BGSU from like 2008 or 2009.

Best part was it was an old guy with a bald head and a white fumanchu.

Well, a future memory.  Booked our flight today for the upcoming, last-homer of the season vs. BG on November 7.  Also received our long-sleeve O H I O Attack Cat t-shirts today from The Bobcat Store.  Whoop Whoop.

My favorite part of Peden is it isn't fancy/ritzy...Just a place to go watch a football game, which is refreshing in the same way Wrigley Field is in baseball.  I like to think that personifies the OU culture...simple minded low-maintenance people, no fluff.

I also miss the days before the sunken field and walking out onto the field during the post game show.

As far as memories, I am surprised I haven't seen any mention of the Pitt game.  Perhaps it goes without saying.

What you don't see on the video is how close it was to complete and utter mayhem.  Many of us up in the stands were running down to jump on the field and help kick some Miami arse. I mostly regret we didn't do so.

'69....you went down to the field and ignored that staid and stoic Connecticut poise?  Love it!!!

My favorite Peden moment was the clad in white wienie man selling his wares when OU's Laurie Lea Schaefer was in attendance by chanting "you can't cheer Miss America without your wienie in your hand".

We must be contemporaries of a sort because the wienie man is a favorite memory of mine but  "Get your 4th quarter wienies" is the most memorable quote I have.

In that same period, however, I vividly remember our dear stoner  Bobcat attacking the Va Tech gobbler, shaking it's long neck by the whatever that red thing is called, knocking it to the ground and basically defiling the poor bird. only to find out when the head came off it it was a female cheerleader.  Out of revenge, Don Strock torched us that day.

Some of my favorite Peden memories:
-Rushing the field in '06 after beating Akron to win the MAC East for the first time in a very long time (the energy in the air was incredible, and of course in hindsight, I realize what that season really symbolized--a change in Ohio culture and Ohio sports..."the beginning" so to speak)
-The NIU game in the fall of 2009. We needed to beat them and then Temple to win the MAC East (which we did!), and I was lucky enough to have sideline passes to that game. I'll never forget seeing a touchdown pass being completed about 10 feet in front of me (Thanks, LaVon Brazill)

I remember rushing the field when we beat Temple during the 2009/2010 school year.  Only about 15 of us rushed lol.  Surprisingly they didn't stop us.

When Strock threw for his 7th or 8th TD of the day somebody in the end zone tossed a whiskey bottle toward the VT player who had caught the pass.  They kicked him out of the stands because there was still whiskey in it and you don't waste booze, no matter how cheap it is.

When I was there, the weenie man was Skip Wilhelm, who could've been the model Zonker in "Doonesbury".

Back then they would let us go on the field after the game for the 110's postgame.  You get a completely different perspective of their routines when you're sitting on the grass in front of them.

For me, Peden is an almost ideal place to watch a game.  The seats are close enough to the field that you get  intimate with the game.  And you can soak in the environment of Ohio -- College Green, South Green, West Green, the Hocking and the hills.  Some foggy night, you might see the ghost of some college football player of long ago.  He would ask "Is this heaven?"  And you answer "Yes.  It's Ohio."

I think it is safe to say there may have been around 15 students total at that game due to it being on Black Friday lol.

Here are my favs from the early 70's.
1. Anything the old mascot,  Mr. Bobcat did. He really had swagger but he couldn't help but swagger with his bottom between his knees. He was cooler than cool. He was Pink Panther-esque. His tail fell off one time and his gestures about that were hilarious. The Toledo Rocket mascot was just a big cardboard tube jambed over some poor kid down to his waist with just his legs sticking out the bottom. He could run but he had no arms stcicking out as they were well up into that tube. Mr. Bobcat knocked him down every chance he got. Without any exposed arms the Rocket had a lot of difficulty getting back on his feet. Lots of good memories from Mr. Bobcat.
2. Folding chairs were set up in front of the student side on the track for Parents Day. One very drunk student lauched his empty wine bottle fifth towards the field. As it headed straight for the parents section on the track I remember thinking that this could be a total disaster. The bottle hit and shattered right on the back of the chair of an older woman who was dressed quite well. The crowd fell totally silent womdering what would happen next. Fortunately, no one was injured from the glass schrapnel but the next moment the woman stood up facing the student section with her fist held high and shouted "You son of a bitch!" The students roared with laughter then hundreds pointed straight at that drunk student so the OU security had no problem in lcoating him and dragging him out. He probably had a bad day after that.
3. Fast forward to the early 90's. I took my two young sons to their first college football game. Northeastern at Ohio. Here was one of Ohio's biggest gainers of the day: Following a Norteastern punt we had the ball inside our own 20 at around the 12 yardline. After two plays of no or negative yards and on third down the QB pitches the ball to his left for a left sweep. Unfortunately, the backfield all went sweep right. The ball was pitched very nicely out onto the grass where a big defensive guy from Northeastern picked up the ball and lumbered towards the endzone. Just as he was about to cross the goaline, an alert Bobcat poked the ball out of the Northeastern player's grasp from behind. The ball bounced into the endzone. The ensuing scrum ended with the ball going out the back of the endline. The officials convened for a discussion then ruled the play a touchback since possession had changed hands from Ohio to Northeastern. The ball was brought out to the 20 and Ohio had a first down. One of the biggest gainers of the day for the Bobcats. A gain of 8 yards and a first down!

Here's one of those magic moments from Peden that I think I've told before here.  This was 1970 or 71.  We were playing Dayton on a damp, chilly, overcast day.  The team didn't play a good first half and trailed.  At the end of its halftime performance, the 110 played "Let the Sun Shine In" and suddenly there was a hole in the clouds and a beam of bright sunlight ungulfed the stadium for the duration of the song.  The crowd went bonkers.  The team came back out in the second half, fought back to tie then tried a winning FG in the last minute.  The kick was partially blocked, and the ball rolled past the first down marker.  For some reason one of the Dayton players touched the ball, making it a a free ball.  Ohio recovered with under ten seconds left and kicked the game winner.

The kid with the whiskey bottle sounds more like a reason to be ashamed.  Those types of incidents explain why generations of Ohioans will never consider Ohio anything but a party school.
