Coaches know the game, better than the AP media folks I imagine, but do they know the competition from top to bottom?

I figure a coach knows his dozen opponents, at least one of which is a bottom of the barrel team to fill the schedule.  Then he keeps current with his conference, especially if there is a championship game to be played.  Then, maybe, he keeps some track of conferences he matches up with (e.g. PAC-12 Big-10) in traditional bowl game pairings.  Then perhaps he looks at future non-con opponents.

But if you ask Coach Solich who the starting QB is for #26 ranked Northwestern, I bet he has no clue.  I doubt he sits down and watches 60 minutes of football from the 30-40 teams worthy of consideration for a top 25 vote week in and week out.  Even if they all played each other, that's still 20 hours a week of dissecting the performance of teams he will never play so that... what?  He can make his mostly meaningless ballot more accurate?

Coaches also see film of teams that his foes play before he plays them. Since there are no common opponents, he wouldn't have a reason to see the Bobcats.

I issue an open invitation for any voter, be they SID, AP, Harris, anybody, to spend the day with me and actually watch 40 college football games in a day. Actually see the teams play, see what they do, their strengths, their weaknesses. Seriously, it's open, and maybe then they'll realize how absolutely blind and ignorant they are to the realities.

You take screen shots of other people's work, make GIFs of other people's work and tweet about 100 times during the day. Quit acting like you are sitting there accurately breaking down 8-10 college football games going on at once because you have a bunch of games on.

Donuts, if you didn't make everything "Private" in your profile, would you still go after the real Tim Burke that way? At this moment, as you bellow from a position of presumed anonymity, your brash pronouncement resonates with the shape of your screen name -- a big zero. How about turning those donut holes into nads and updating your profile with some real information about yourself? Then maybe I'll take more seriously your ascertain that Tim's a pompous blowhard (which is what you really meant...right?).

Oh ... Tim, that's not my opinion but merely my interpretation of "Duncan's" remarks

I will concur that Tim Burke is a pompous blowhard. But he's OUR pompous blowhard.

He's also correct that individual poll voters do not have full knowledge of the 100+ teams they are charged with ranking.

I will posit, however, that there is some truth to be found in the hive's mind and grousing over a position here or there is a #firstworldproblem.

I've been ready to go off on the concept that the absurd coach's poll has bearing on a National Championship while the AP has been deemed irrelevant. But there is a counterpoint to be made that this poll essentially settles the argument of what teams are numbers one and two and nothing else of consequence. One could suggest that a non-AQ team attempting to qualify for BCS cash needs the coaches to acknowledge their existence; but that's about exhibition game payments, not a National Championship.

The AP asked the BCS not to include them in the BCS formula following the 2004 season. I couldn't remember the exact reason for this, but the link gives what appears on cursory inspection to be the chain of events that led to this request  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AP_Poll#AP_Poll_inclusion_in_the_BCS

I do not know TB and have no idea if he is a blowhard or not. However, I can't help but wonder if any poll voters have accepted his invitation for a Saturday afternoon/night of watching 40 college football games. And to think that my wife and daughter give me a hard time for watching 2 games each Saturday.

Well he went after every SID, AP and Harris poll voter in the country, basically proclaiming they are all blind and ignorant. Slip in a humblebrag about how much football he watches, and there you have it.

No one watches 40 games a day. It's impossible. He watches games to capture weird/funny things that go on during the game, not to break down who are the 16th-25th best teams in the country.

Thanks for letting me know what I think of Tim though.

The Coach's poll is just as much a contrived good 'ol boy joke as preseason polls are.  They are set up to maintain the iron grip the "traditional powers" already have.

Donuts...You seem to know an awful lot about someone whose efforts you supposedly don't respect...

Doesn't that mean he is doing his job?

My only point is just because you might monitor a ton of games each week, that still would not mean you actually see and can break down each team. There is always going to be guess work that has to be done. Ohio looked terrible in the first quarter of their opener at noon. There's a good chance that's the only time voters have seen Ohio play (other games around the country were coming on, so a lot of people tuned in just to see the beginning of the new era). We haven't been on national TV, or hardly any TV for that matter. So unless the voters fired up their CUSA feed (which again, could make us look good or bad depending on what part they saw), there is nothing to go off of. Not every top 25 team considered would be in that situation, but we are talking about around 40-45 teams to check out a week to truly vote correctly.

To make it seem like it's possible to know and understand each team under consideration for top 25 votes is crazy. I don't care if Tim Burke, Tim Albin or Trey Burke says it. Only one person is making this claim though, so yeah, I said something about it.

To be fair, I use my real name and make moronic, brash, incoherent pronouncements.

I use Cat4ever and am not exactly a Phi Beta Kappa (Crappa is more like it) ... but one click on the screen name and you know who I am, where I am, and how to reach me via email.
