Yyyyeah.  There are issues there.  Pat Forde did a piece this week on how college kickers in general are having problems.

It seems to me it's not just Weller...it's the whole FG unit.  Seems like teams are getting closer to blocking our kicks, and the snaps and holds seem a little dicey at times.

That's what is scary. After 4 games to see such execution, or lack thereof. I hope they work on this every day next week as this can (and possibly will) cost us a game yet this year. Missing 3 inside of 40 is bothersome. Weller has proven in the past he's better than that.

Am I the only one that is shocked every time a punt does not get blocked? I can't tell if the line is letting the pressure through or Grant is taking too long to get rid of it. It seems like it takes way to long for him to catch and kick.

One thing I noticed, Grant lets the ball get to his chest some times on the snap instead of catching it with his hands. It slows the whole thing down a bit.

But when he comes off, he doesn't seem angry at the others or asking questions to the holder, etc... He just seems frustrated with himself.

Specialty positions are rarely appreciated when they do their job and crushed when they don't. Not only the kicker, but the long snapper and holder. Certainly it will work itself out.

Seems like the punter is way too close to the three up guys.  I think he is going to kick the ball into their butts every time.  Anybody count the yards?

I wonder if we have anyone who serves as a kicking coach, or if analysis is all on Weller. So much of kicking is mental, and if the kicker gets rattled--for any reason--his kicking can get worse. Missing three field goal attempts qualifies as "rattling."

I've heard kickers quoted as saying that after kicking too many times their kicking leg "turns to rubber".  Perhaps that was what was happening with Weller yesterday...between kickoffs, PATs, and field goal attempts, he was called upon to kick 17 times in the game, not counting practice kicks during the warmup.

It might have been wiser to let Amicone attempt the last two field goals.

Weller's Day was much like many days for me on the golf course.  I start out driving the ball about 260-70 straight down the fairway and then the last few holes I am OB quite a bit.  Maybe my next round I won't drink beer on the back-nine.

He was money from 49, and it would have been good from over 60.

If I remember correctly, he put all but one kickoff into the endzone (not including the squib to end the half), And the one that wasn't was taken around the 2.

Timing seemed much better yesterday than against PSU and NMSU.

I'm more inclined to think it was a combination of wind,  tired leg and a lack of focus given the game well in hand.

I think this is it - he was kicking well early. I'm not going to worry about him.

I didn't get a chance to follow the game live, so I just watched it. Man, besides "put away a team that we should put away," Weller's kicking is what I'll take away from this one.

It really makes me uneasy if he can't get this turned around in the next few "tune-up" games.

All-time scoring leader or not, if he's got issues, mental or otherwise, at this point, the idea of sending him out for a game-deciding field goal against say Ball State later this season scares me.

He's no Brooks Rossman, but man, I hope he's not getting the football equivalent if Chuck Knoblauch were a kicker.

I've heard speculation that the problem is timing and chemistry between the hiker, the holder and the kicker.  It's got to work like a well-oiled machine and right now it isn't.  I don't think all blame goes on Weller.

it certainly optimal to have worked with the same kicking unit for years.  I recall he has both a new holder and snapper this year?  If that is the case, then this is not to be unexpected.  It should get better as the year progresses and there is better chemistry.

This could be, however, Mr. Weller has NEVER had a cold streak in his career.  It could be that his mind isn't as relaxed as it has been and perhaps he's thinking of things mechanically and it's just a matter of time till he gets into the zone again.\--change of snapper and holder and a few misses might have led to the different mindset.  

It happens to stars in various sports--he just needs to get that unconscious competent rolling again.

What does that have to do with this? I'm just pointing out the obvious. So far this year he has missed 5 kicks from less than 40 yards. He's missed 6 of those (less than 40) in his entire career here! So something is going on. Not to mention, some of those misses have been way off.

If its a holder/snapper thing, then I'm sure it will get worked out. However, if its the "yips"...then it could really hurt us down the road.

Agree Weller still needs to find his zone for 2012. Kickers are like golfers very finicky no matter how accomplished they have to find their happy place and mechanics for each kick, game, and season. Historic's and experience comes into play with just how well they can identify the deficiency  and adjust to execute successful kicks.
I.E. Brooks Rossman  is a name that will make a Bobcat fan cringe worth his salt, however went onto a much better result at Kansas State.

Hopefully things will work out.

Weller  has been one of our best recruits and it will be hard to match his ability as a kicker.

Me thinks it's a combination of mental and new people....still a clutch performer and the best kicker I've seen at Ohio...and yes he's on my fantasy team...actually I'm starting TT and Beau and Foster and Weller this week.
