I wonder if we're having more defense injuries because our opponents are running more plays against us...though I think most are going more no-huddle than 'hurry-up' (so less substitution ability but probably we  don't face too many more plays).  And when we go hurry-up, we've not had injuries on our offense.

Best our offense has looked all year?  From late in 2nd qtr of Penn State through 2nd half--there were a couple of possessions on which we really picked up the pace--snap,snap,snap--and drilled PennState.

Yeah I don't understand what you are complaining about, as fans we will always complain about how our team plays no matter how they are doing.  If the secondary is playing like crap we are going to talk about it, if the offense seems to have a problem showing up in th 1st Quarter we are going to talk about it.  I don't think there is one person unhappy about getting a win and being 5-0 but we can be unhappy by the performance.

Oh and you reference how we are almost breaking into the top 25,  this close win to UMass actually pushed backed our progress on that goal a little bit, just saying.

If the secondary is "playing like crap" it could be due to a multitude of reasons (injuries, youth, scheme) many of which we as fans have no insight into.  Would those that cast those aspersions welcome those same types of comments stated in the same fashion if directed at their performance in the work place?  I doubt it...

Yes I'm aware that the close win lost us a few votes...I'm also aware that breaking into the rankings is an inevitability if we remain undefeated (which thus far we have).  When I used the phrase "knocking on the door" I meant it in the context of a season.

EVERY team has injuries. We can't hide behind such a weak excuse. Life (football) goes on. Deal with it or forget about a top 25 ranking.

True, but Tettleton not being able to run option/scramble like he does really hurts.  His feet are as big of a weapon as his arm, and if he can't properly use them (fighting for extra yards, being able to juke opposing players, etc.) then there goes a significant portion of what we do.

This is exhausting...

This (BA) is a "Forum".

Most definitions define that generally as "A meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged".

If critiques are not relevant, acceptable, worthy discussion points - then why even have it (BA)? We could all just check in w/OhioBobcats.Com on a daily basis - where "Rah, Rah Everything Here Is Is Just Dandy" is the only opinion expressed. Win, lose, or draw. Why even have a "forum"?

For about the 5th time in this thread alone...I'm not saying no one "can be slightly critical".  Open discussion about performance is obviously the essence of a fan site.  If you weren't offended by some of the knee jerk comments then so be it...Carry on.  Again...Just exercising the same right you're standing up for.

U Mass I believe is 0 - 5. Yes, we have a 5 - 0 record. Wanna analyze each game? Sorry, we have a long, long way to go to even hope for a top 25 ranking.

No one's questioning your respective right to "critique"...I just feel strongly that there's a way to get a mature / educated point across and then there's childish tantrums.  I'm sorry that some of you don't agree with my right to express my thoughts as well but it certainly doesn't mean I'm not going to continue to stand behind them.

What I can see now is that I probably should have chosen a different title for the thread...I should have used "Some" instead of "We"...My bad...

Excuse me while I go enjoy my half full glass of OJ...

36, I normally agree with just about everything you have to say. Your letter to The Post last month was written exactly how I would have done it. However, I think you're misreading the fan base on this one.

I felt like we dodged a bullet in Huntington by slowing down Marshall's potent passing attack. In my eyes, Marshall was the biggest (and last) road block to a very special season. The injuries in our secondary are going to be a weakness for the entire year. Weller has been scoring a lot, but there is obviously something shaky going on for the special teams all year. And, Tettleton is obviously not 100% healthy. These are all facts, not baseless rumors.

I have felt all year that Ohio has the best shot in the country to run the table. I'm not mad at the players or pointing fingers at anyone for not blowing out an inferior opponent. For the first time all year I saw vulnerability in our team that might be exposed by other teams that are pass happy. The fan base is just nervous, not mad. I don't think sharing our concerns equates to a lack of faith in the coaches or players.

THIS is "discussion"...  Yes these are all facts...Couldn't agree more...

The only thing I'll say is that again I fear I've been misinterpreted...I'm not misreading our fan base...I LOVE our fan base...I'm simply expressing a lack of patience for the vocal minority and the ways in which they choose to communicate.  My apologies for not getting that across in the original post.

THANK YOU 695 for demonstrating how to relate cogent thoughts thereby facilitating a "discussion"  rather than a public stoning powered by groupthink...

Carry on men...Enjoy your weeks...See you Saturday...Go Bobcats!!!!!!

Wow...

I'm honestly at a loss to even address some of the sentiments thrown up on this board sine the conclusion of the UMass game.

We're 5-0 for the first time in 40+ years and we're chucking OUr program under the bus?

We're knocking on the door of a top 25 ranking and we're throwing a tantrum about a close win against a conference opponent?

We're patching things together to get through injuries and we're criticizing our young players that put more into this team on a daily basis than any of us do in an entire season?

I'm embarrassed by some of the things I've read.

Bobcats...Great win fellas...Get well...Most of Bobcat Nation is PROUD of you...We'll be there waiting for you in Peden on Saturday..Go Ohio!!!!!

FWIW You're number 25 in the SBNation poll (I had you at number 20 on my Ballot)

Thirty votes worth of voters put Ohio in the Top 25. CBSsports 124 has Ohio at #19. Do they belong there? That's an entirely different question. Whether they belong there or not, I think they are likely to remain there, if they can avoid waking up in a ditch. They were a little woozy last week, but at the end of the day, still standing. No one said it was going to be easy, wearing the eyepatch all year.

For the record, the methodology at CBS is different than most: It isn't attempting to rank teams now, but rather based on how they feel they'll rank at the end of the year (clearly, they think we'll win a few more).

I'm not here to promote one method of ranking who is in the Top 25 or another. There is room for a divergence of opinions. Bobcat36 simply said "We're knocking on the door of a top 25 ranking", and Jerry86 challenged him on that. Nevertheless, there are some polls that do rank Ohio in the Top 25, and others that have them "knocking on the door". Some examples:
1. CBSsports has them not knocking on the door, but already in.
2. Paul Myerburg has them at 26, which would seem to qualify as "knocking on the door".
3. Some of the voters in the AP and Coach's poll have them in the Top 25.
4. Sagarin's Elo-Chess ratings have them at #30.

Funny what winning does to people's perspective.  And there are literally hundreds of opinions on the team's successes to this point, and most of them may differ, and nearly all of them are correct from each person's POV.

I finished watching the game tonight, which always gives me a better feel for the game than seeing it in person, and clearly:
  • We played a UMass team that was vastly different than week one-four's team.  I watched the game trying to remove the stigma of their 0-4 record, and doing that, it is clear that UMass has improved a bunch since I saw them in person against UConn.
  • Their QB is going to be damn tough for three more years, and had his coming out party Saturday.
  • Their three most significant contributors on O were a fifth year senior and two BCS, fifth years, all of whom looked far better than they did in the earlier games, as well they should have.
  • While I would like our D to blitz more instead of playing contain and trusting our secondary more than in the flex/run prevent defense that we employ, we need to be prepared for our D to give up big numbers in smaller chunks for the entire season, because that is the scheme that we play.  We are always attempting to keep the play in front of us and not give up the big plays.  And that would be the case if we had Travis and all the other injured DB's healthy or not.  That was the scheme against Penn State, Marshall, it was the scheme against UMass.  I have a feeling it will be the same against all the other, throw first O's we will face for the remainder of the season.  If you don't like it, then you need to invest in some Tums, because watching the D is going to give you indigestion the remainder of the year.  It may allow teams to look better than their records because we are not looking to stop their strength, but in the end our staff believes it is the scheme that will lead to us winning the day.
  • Our game plan is to be able to outscore the other team by employing the defensive scheme above.
  • It has worked five times.
  • If we score nine more points than our opponents in total the remainder of the season, and beat each team by one, I bet our team would call this season a success.
I don't believe our team is a top 25 team, and I believe if we are ranked in the top 25 by the end of the season that there wouldn't be 30-40 teams that would beat us six out of ten times.

I could care less where we are ranked, I just wanna beat the other guy.
