Funny what winning does to people's perspective. And there are literally hundreds of opinions on the team's successes to this point, and most of them may differ, and nearly all of them are correct from each person's POV.
I finished watching the game tonight, which always gives me a better feel for the game than seeing it in person, and clearly:
- We played a UMass team that was vastly different than week one-four's team. I watched the game trying to remove the stigma of their 0-4 record, and doing that, it is clear that UMass has improved a bunch since I saw them in person against UConn.
- Their QB is going to be damn tough for three more years, and had his coming out party Saturday.
- Their three most significant contributors on O were a fifth year senior and two BCS, fifth years, all of whom looked far better than they did in the earlier games, as well they should have.
- While I would like our D to blitz more instead of playing contain and trusting our secondary more than in the flex/run prevent defense that we employ, we need to be prepared for our D to give up big numbers in smaller chunks for the entire season, because that is the scheme that we play. We are always attempting to keep the play in front of us and not give up the big plays. And that would be the case if we had Travis and all the other injured DB's healthy or not. That was the scheme against Penn State, Marshall, it was the scheme against UMass. I have a feeling it will be the same against all the other, throw first O's we will face for the remainder of the season. If you don't like it, then you need to invest in some Tums, because watching the D is going to give you indigestion the remainder of the year. It may allow teams to look better than their records because we are not looking to stop their strength, but in the end our staff believes it is the scheme that will lead to us winning the day.
- Our game plan is to be able to outscore the other team by employing the defensive scheme above.
- It has worked five times.
- If we score nine more points than our opponents in total the remainder of the season, and beat each team by one, I bet our team would call this season a success.
I don't believe our team is a top 25 team, and I believe if we are ranked in the top 25 by the end of the season that there wouldn't be 30-40 teams that would beat us six out of ten times.
I could care less where we are ranked, I just wanna beat the other guy.
