Why would we ever want to honor an era (The Paw) that put us at the very bottom of college football?  I mean the VERY bottom.

those uni's were great! Lakarlos Townsend may have only gotten 3 YPC, but he looked good doing it!!!

The Paw represents OU for alumni who were in Athens from 1978-1995, these people are now in their late 30s to early 50s which I'm guessing is a great age range to solicit donations from. I like the paw.

On our trip to State College we saw a car with a green paw sticker. This was on a rural road about 30 miles from State College.  My first reaction was that it was another Bobcat fan traveling to see the game with Penn State.  As we got closer, however, it turned out to be some local high school.  This reinforced my perception of just how generic the paw has become. There is only one OHIO. There are thousands of paws.

I know a few high schools use a modified Paw, but I've never personally seen the OU paw in use by another school. The attack cat on the other hand is a logo OU bought and other schools do use it too. example: http://www2.nbc4i.com/sports/football_friday_nite/brookhaven/

I don't think the Paw should be OUr only logo, but I just wish it was used more to change things up. The Attack cat is on everything, you try and buy any merchandise and 99% of the time it's the arch OHIO with the attack cat over it.

And for the record I'm from the Paw era and even though the team sucked those years I still love the PAW.

I didn't know we bought that logo "off the shelf." If that's true, I'm very surprised, and would be even more surprised if we don't have any kind of exclusivity agreement. Your link is a high school, and I would guess that's either copyright infringement or OU has given special permission. If not, as I said, I'm very surprised.

I guess we had the attack cat made for us.  Here is a story on the death of the Paw that talks about it- http://www.athensnews.com/ohio/article-14167-ou-paw-waves-goodbye-attack-cat-springs-into-its-place.html

I referenced brookhaven because OCF said it was a high school in Penn using the paw and to show high schools us the a.c. too.

I could be wrong but i thought the coach at Brookhaven is a former Ohio football player.

Well, I've seen numerous high schools using variations on the paw.  The AC you cite is the only one I've ever seen that looked anything like our AttackCat, which was itself a stylized version of a decal that I had on my VW bug back in the mid-1960s.  So, the AC concept has been around a lot longer than the current version of the official athletic logo.  The paw always seemed to me to be a kind of aberration of the OHIO tradition.  I can, however, understand those who went to school at the time it was the primary athletic mark having another viewpoint.  The high school paw that I saw in Pennsylvania was actually green and had the same number of pads as our paw so I would assume that the high school might have a Bobcat mascot.

I don't know about the legality of it but small High Schools with only a few hundred kids steal major college logos and fight songs all of the time.  I don't know if there is some sort of official agreement, some small fee paid, or if it is just accepted that a school of that size could not really afford its own logo and maybe it gets youth of the high school interested in the college.

I was in school during the logo switch.  I remember the student body being mostly upset about it because they were making paw apparel illegal.

I know some people like the arch Ohio and the attack cat as separate logos.  As far as looks go I might agree.  As things are with Ohio State trying to steal our identity, its really the combination logo though that makes the best statement about who we are and I think that is why they made the change.

Link to the Franklin Furnace Green Bobcats near Ironton.  This was basically our uniform except the Green is a little lighter and it doesn't say "Ohio" on the Helmet.

OK, its pretty clear doing minimal research that colleges don't want this happening.  The first linked article mentions Ohio's logo being used in the Washington Area.  It also mentioned Wisconsin's "Motion W".  I have seen that W used in various different color combinations at several different places.

Cambridge Bobcats

Just looking at High School helmet databases the two most used logo's by far are Clemson and Wisconsin.  One of those articles pretty much lets us know how Wisconsin feels about that.  I don't know about Clemson.  In some cases it could be similar to the $1 a year plus 10% of merchandise revenue that was mentioned.  You don't know about the legality or how the schoold feels about it if it isn't legal in any case.  But it looks like about 1/3 of hight schools around the country have college or pro logos or very slightly altered logos.
