I know I might get hate for this but I honestly think Frank is a little overrated I mean let’s be real he never even won the MAC. I get that we were terrible when he got here and he made the program respectable again but I think naming the field after him and idolizing him is a little excessive.

You didn't live through the Wilderness years of Cleve and PaPaL, did you?

This isn't worth my usual snark.

Pre Frank:
105 years, 2 bowls - 0 wins

Frank:
16 years, 11 bowls - 5 wins

The previous six coaches:
26 years: 95 wins

Frank:
16 years: 115 wins

OU was barely a skidmark on the schedule, before Frank got here. Now we fight online about whether we should fire a coach in the midst of a 5-2 season. Show a little respect to the legend.

Friday beers have started earlier and earlier I see.

Look...nobody is happy that Frank never won a MAC title, including myself. But do you realize how far behind this program was before he got here? It wasn't really even D1 respectable. Grobe did the best he could with what he had, but Frank took it to another level. The foundation he laid in the 16 some odd years he was here set the stage for the next person to finally win that elusive MAC title. Frank deserves everything he gets and then some.

Now, we can debate all we want about why Ohio didn't win a MAC title in his tenure. But to say he was overrated is a little...a LOT...over the top. Cmon man. Ohio was an FBS basement dweller and he turned into one of the most consistent programs in the conference and the G5. Shake yourself. Put down the booze.

I just dozed off at my computer and had this dream where I took a class on Bobcat football history and forgot about it until it was time for the final. I rushed to to the final and professor Monroe was telling us to answer a single essay in our blue books.

BTW, Didn't Frank lead the fundraising for the new turf?

Like everyone else, I'm disappointed that we didn't win the MAC under Solich. But championships aren't the only measurement of success. Hell, Marv Levy was 0-4 in Super Bowls and he's in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Solich retired as the winningest football coach in MAC history. He turned a perennial doormat program into the team to beat almost every year. And he did it by running a clean program. That's a lot. We'll eventually win a MAC championship. Solich set the stage for it.

I was always impressed with the legions of former players, coaches and friends that would line up on Saturday morning pre game at the team hotel in places like greater Chicago, Providence,Rhode Island , St Petersburg for a chance to say hello and shake Frank's hand. I would say it was quite a sight. He did so much for our programs beyond wins and losses

As I said about a year ago, the coach who should have been so recognized is Bill Hess. He won at least 3 MAC titles in 1960, 1963, and 1968. The 1960 and 1968 teams were undefeated with major conference opponents on those season schedules. It is a travesty that nothing is named for him. No wonder the young fans on here do not know about his legacy.

I think the Solich recognition was warranted, but I also agree that something should be named after Hess, for reasons I've articulated here many times over the years. Maybe the Peden stadium tower?

As I much as I disagree with this opinion, I will be the one person to say it is a legitimate take. He said that Frank is a LITTLE OVERRATED because he never won a conference championship in 15+ years and has the field named after him. If the conference championship has a disproportionate importance to, it's a fair belief. If Frank had coached in the 1980s and 1990s this opinion may be completely valid since there were no bowl games for any team other than the conference champion. I'm not saying that being rather good in bowl games for the his last 10 years was the most important evaluation criteria for Frank, but it is something that he should get credit for.

Glance through this table from Wikipedia.  Other than the one-season wonders Warwick Ford in 1897 and Arlie Jones in 1901, Peden had the highest winning pecentage of any OHIO coach -- .717.  He was a graduate of Illinois and during his tenure beat his alma mater twice and also other "big name" teams, as they used to call P5 schools in those days.  When I was growing up they used to fly pennants of all the MAC teams at the stadium on game day as well as an Illinois pennant, in honor of that "old cuss."

It's certainly an argument worth making. I do believe he was overrated in respect to his full tenure in Athens. The program was on the decline from 2013 on. Frank didn't seem to have the energy to take us to the next level.

Back to back 9-4 in 2017 and again in 2018 makes me think we were just more inconsistent and not necessarily on the decline.

This discussion reminds me of a statement made by a national commentator, I believe on ESPN, when we hired Frank after he was fired at Nebraska at the end of a 9-3 regular season, "If he goes 9-3 in Athens they'll not fire him, they'll build a statute of him."

Nothing against Frank, but you could NOT be more right in this opinion.
