With Cincinnati moving to the Big 12, they have to trim four-game non-conference slates to three. This has resulted in the Bearcats canceling a home/home series with NC State.

2026 is another four game slate for them as they were also set to play BC, WKU, and Miami. Are we going to get bought out?

I wondered if they would cancel when they got an invitation. It looks like they are keeping the WKU series. So they probably either will buy out the Ohio return game, cancel the BC series (but they are OK in 2027 so maybe not) or ask to move Ohio six or so more years out. This return game was supposed to be last year. I suspect that we asked to move it out because we had the chance for a home and home with Syracuse so we can't be too upset. It would be odd to have a return game in 2031 or 32 for a game first played in, what was it, 2017? It could happen though.

Given the trajectory of both teams and being from Cincinnati I hope it is canceled. Hard to believe how far they risen and how far we have fallen in the last five years.

I actually think it may still be played. They are in a better, albeit watered down, conference so they will be playing enough decent teams in conference to get into the playoffs if they win a lot of those and we will likely be the lesser of all of those three other teams mentioned. Fickel and his boss will probably rather take their chances with us. Maybe not a few years ago necessarily but in the future? Yes.

We're the only road OOC game they have scheduled in 2026. The other games are at home: BC, MOFO, WKU. (MOFO technically gets a home game but it's being played in Cincy.) My guess is that if they have only four conference home games that year, we're probably gone. But if they get five B12 home games, WKU would likely go. In their minds, a road win against (what I'm hoping will be) a decent G5 Ohio team would certainly help Cincy's case for one of the 12 playoff spots.

Cincinnati cannot just cancel this game if we don't agree to a buyout, correct? If we do that it's on us.

It is possible that the details on what they can and cannot do and what they have to pay as a buyout with a specified amount of advanced notice are given in the contract.

They could always push it back, maybe to 2030 or beyond. The problem Cincy has is their contract with MOFO for a game every year. A nice luxury when they have four OOC games a year but a real liability when they join a "P" conference that wants them to upgrade their OOC schedule but takes away an OOC game every year. Playing two MAC teams in a year doesn't help them with the B12 front office. But the MOFO contract ends in 2029 and might not be renewed, which would give them an opportunity to reschedule us.

I'm relatively sure that the MOFO contract will be renewed. It's the oldest continuous rivalry west of the Allegheny Mountains as they used to say. It would help if MOFO actually won a game or two between now and 2029. It's been rather one-sided in recent years.

News today that Cincinnati has canceled their home-home with WKU 2025/26. The originally scheduled 2020 Covid canceled game against Nebraska will now be played in 2025, with Cincinnati playing as "host" at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianaplolis.

Not sure how well that bodes for Ohio keeping their return trip from the Bearcats. UC's 2026 schedule now has an open date that will most likely be a home game to replace the Hilltoppers. I would guess they'd want a bigger road game on their OOC slate.

How? They spent the money and invested in their program. They just made a FOUR team College Football Playoff and have an easy path to get in a 12 team playoff now that they're in the Big 12. What am I missing?

Their budget is around $80 million, ours is $29 million according to a list I saw last night. Literally a different league in more ways than one

Coastal Carolina needs a road game in 2026, and Western Kentucky is open. I'd pursue either one of those, as both have been strong recently, particularly Coastal since they moved up.

I wouldn't mind seeing an ongoing series with WKU.

I was really looking forward to that one. I'm sure Julie isn't sweating too much since they got a nice chunk of cash for their troubles, but that would've been one of the better atmospheres we've ever had at Peden. A fun, winnable (as we stand on 10/25/2023) game to have in Athens.

WKU could be an easy addition to the schedule - nothing currently scheduled for either team on that 9/26 date, and a short drive for them, though that is wildly less exciting. Would love to see them add at least an FBS team, but I feel like we're gonna be looking at an FCS squad as a warm up to South Alabama (who is not an FCS team, surprisingly).

We'll get both. All that's on the books are roadies with Nebraska and USA. We need two home games. Standard fare - an FCS and a home/home with G5 or lower P5.

Maybe WKU will be a conference game by then. They aren't really happy in the "new C-USA." The MacDaddies just need to find them a dancing partner.

You don't wanna underestimate South Alabama. They beat the brakes off Oklahoma State earlier this year and Kane Womack is a coach to watch out for - unless he takes a crap job.
