Brent Vigen, Montana State...offshoot of Solich coaching tree. Also coached with Albin and Burrow at NDSU. Base salary is currently $295,000.

60-12 career record.

Playing for FCS championship.
He interviewed for Washington State the last two years and it mostly came down to him not wanting to leave his team right in the middle of a championship run. If Ohio can wait a couple weeks, I think this would be an absolute home run hire.
Problem is FCS natty occurs after portal opens.

Also, not a single Ohioan on the roster.

Definitely worth a look though, checks a lot of boxes, and I'm sure Larschfeld is familiar with him.

Even if he doesn't end up here, I'm still a fan. Definitely has a lot of class.
Not a slight at all to the Ad or President, but I doubt Lars understands Ohio HS football. And not many Ohio guys go to Montana or the Dakotas anyway. Now the coach, he’d understand it and make sure he’s got an Ohio guy with ties on staff.

I would entertain Nick Toth or Kevin Carberry. Hauser would be a great choice but I assume a building cleanse is coming. Doesn’t Nowinsky still have a residence I Athens? I think all four are capable and would be welcome.
I'd hate to see an entire building cleanse of the entire staff simply because of what resulted with Smith.

The only alternative choice I'd be okay with as new HC would be South Dakota State's Dan Jackson. I'd have to think Larscheid would be on the phone with him asap because of the Jackrabbit connection.
I totally agree that I would hate to see a cleanse of the coaching staff just because of letting Smith go and would like to maintain some level of continuity where possible. Here is a list of coaches with longevity with the program.

1. Scott Isphording, Offensive Coordinator / Quarterbacks Coach, 12 seasons
2. De’Angelo Smith, Defensive Passing Game Coordinator / CB / Director of Player Dev, 9 seasons
3. Tremayne Scott, Running Game Coordinator / Defensive Line Coach, 8 seasons
4. John Hauser, Interim Head Coach / Defensive Coordinator, 4 seasons
Prior to Hauser, I thought we should consider Tremayne for a while. Id love to see him at DC. And I would maybe even interview him for HC. Gotta make a splash. And a former all-Mac defensive lineman would certainly be that. If Hauser, I wonder if he promotes one of him or D-Lo to DC. Tremayne has been here since I was in school. That guy is Bobcat football through and through. I’d hate to see him get lost in a potential shuffle. D Lo as well. He went to Cincinnati, but he’s been here longer. One of us now.

Scott is as loyal as loyal to OU as you’ll ever seen on a staff anywhere. Pretty wild. I don’t know how I feel with him at head coach, but I’d definitely have him on a short list of interviews. You want to talk about earning and learning your way to the top, him and Albin put in the time.

I think we have some good internal options, if that was the route they chose. Lars might want to make his own mark though and not just promote someone’s else’s guys.

Honestly, I like the idea of this hierarchy:

HC: John Hauser
OC: Scott Isphording (Assistant HC)
DC: De’Angelo Smith (Director of Player Dev)
Running Game Coordinator/DL/Defensive Passing Game Coordinator: Tremayne Scott

Not knowing anything about him, Johns doesn't look like he sticks around at one spot for very long and not a good history of being retained either. He was a Broyles award nominee at Duke in 2022. His offenses look to put up big numbers though.

If this is the best outside candidate they can find, I'm even less confident in Lori and Slade than I was before.

Considering they fired someone without reasonable cause, they should expect to not be popular among the coaching community. Something about sleeping in the bed you made and such.

Curious as to what you base hiring Toth off of?

He led Oklahoma State to a 1-11 record and one of the worst statistical offenses in the country. Maybe we can look at the Offensive Coordinator at UMASS too!

Sounds like he is buddies with our new AD also.

Holy cow. This guy? If Slade hires Johns it’s CONFIRMED he doesn’t know what he’s doing!
Let’s trade all the momentum of the last 5 years, let alone the last 20 years, for some guy who coached him when he was a player at a place that doesn’t know how to win games! No offense Northwestern LOL.

I’m sure Johns is a nice guy. He’s from Ohio, he’s coached at some big places. But that’s not a slam dunk homerun hire by any means. If Slade hires Johns then the whole team and the whole staff will walk. Brian Hartline? Mike Denbrock? Bryant Haines? Sure. But a fired OC at a 1-11 Big12 program? Cmon man. Hire Hauser and let’s keep this train rolling!

This is no joke I’m hearing from sources that they are going to gut the entire staff after everything and announce it sometime after the bowl game. Probably are going to hire outside the program. Really gotta feel for guys like coach scott, Dlo, and Hausser who are either from the area or built their families there. Gotta hope a new guy can keep some players and build a similar culture because we have been rolling the past couple years.

This could go south fast if they do that. Slade better get it right or he’ll have a heap of trouble ever getting alumni support going forward. I’m not predicting anything, just not feeling good about a complete clean out.

I don't want to bash Kevin Johns - probably a good guy to hang out with and talk to - but I'm failing to see how he would be a good fit of any sort for us.

I will still trust Slade as our AD, but he will need to put in the work after he names the new HC to prove that he's everything as he was advertised to be back at South Dakota State and other places.

Slade's Northwestern teammate who happens to be from Ohio. End of Story. Not what you know but WHO you know.

This guy was not a teammate of Slade’s - he was an offensive assistant coach at Northwestern while Slade was a special teams player. Johns played QB at Dayton.

Looking into him, I am a bit confused how this guy went from being Riley Leonard’s OC and QB coach at Duke in 2022-23 to bouncing around Oklahoma and Oklahoma St as a lower assistant the past 2 years.

I think it's very unlikely coaches are turning down the conversation.

And if there are, I in it has more to do with the fact that it's also, you know, not that good of a job. Just on its own merits. Budget, conference, NIL, revenue share. It's been a long time since we've hired outside of the program, and it's a different world now.

I would challenge your assertion that we aren’t a good job. If you look at head coach salaries, MAC head coaches outside of the bottom tier are paid as much as or more than plenty of head coaches at schools in the MWC, Sun Belt, AAC, and C-USA. We also have a strong recent history of success, so winning and getting that next job is very realistic.

Are we as good of a landing spot as top G5 jobs like USF or Memphis? No, but you could be in a much worse situation to compete (cough cough, Charlotte) or truly getting paid nothing like at Kent State.

I will say this in a different way than I said it before… If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!. Keep Houser and the staff in place this year, if it is successful, great. If not, there will be plenty of other new candidates next year.

I also trust Slade, however it very well could be the President making this decision.

I know of two situations in OHIO football history where the president overruled the AD's coaching preference. One work out very well -- Frank; the other was a disaster -- Cleve. [In the former case the AD in question spent the rest of his time here claiming he was on board with the Frank hire from the beginning.]

They're not being fired. They just won't be retained. It's very rare that a new coach from outside the program would hang on to guys still in the program. He would want to assemble his own staff.

Now that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if this late in the cycle he did keep some folks around. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if Hauser was still on staff.
