Virginia Tech just hit a home run. That guy will have Mid-Atlantic recruiting dialed in for the Hokies and Dabo's free ride in the ACC ends. I get it, Clemson is not currently the best team in the league, but has always been easy for them given how the rest of the league recruits and pays for their facilities, coaching, NIL, etc.
I'm not so sure that Franklin will do well in Blacksburg. It's not the easist place to recruit to. It's kind of like Athens, without being 1:15 minutes from the capital city with a huge football factory that takes up so much oxygen. And, I just don't think he's that great a coach. As always, I could be all wrong, but that's my gut assessment.
He got Vandy to three bowls in three years without a Diego Pavia level QB.

Jordan Rodgers is a decent TV announcer but he was a marginally "better than nothing" QB option for Franklin at VU. My gut feeling is he will do pretty good at VT.
If he recruits anywhere near his levels at Penn State (which I'm sure he does), he would have a top three if not top two recruiting class every year with a fake Miami and Florida State up in that mix. This makes too much sense, and given the talent level in State College was darn close to the same level of Columbus year in and year out.....yeah.....lookout

Franklin isn’t recruiting to PSU anymore, that’s part of the draw for sure, was before him, will be after him. Not sure I’d say they continually had equal talent to Columbus, but ok.

I think he'll be damn good at VT, and with a lot less pressure. I doubt he wants Vick breathing now his neck, but Michael Vick as offensive coordinator...? Talk about a recruiting pop. That would be wild.

Problem is once you have Vick at OC, and you have some success... where does he go from there? Hired your replacement.

Steele's preseason pick for #1 was Penn State, so yes I think the talent was there. He didn't produce. He won't be able to recruit that level of talent to Blacksburg. Even if he has the best recruiting class in the ACC, which is doubtful, I doubt that he gets the most out of that talent. I think of him as kinder, gentler, nicer version of Brian Kelly. Just one man's perception.

If you look at Penn State's roster, it's chalk full of guys from the mid-Atlantic belt and tidewater areas where Va Tech made hay in the 90s and 2000s. Even if he doesn't get to national championship/Mike Vick levels, a 10-2 season in the ACC will usually get you into the Playoffs. Hokie fans will be happy with that. This is a HR hire for them and a perfect landing spot for Franklin.

There was about 15 years there where VT cleaned up the Virginia/Carolina region like Clemson. I can remember when Clemson first was ranked #1 in the CFP and VT fans were like Clemson? WTH? Everyone today categorizes them as an elite program. The ACC is down so perfect time to go in with a big hire.

Wilcox is out. Coach Smith's old boss is the interim coach. I wonder if he gets interviewed for the gig.

From Yahoo Sports' Steven Godfrey:

-Rumor that Tulane's John Summerall will be Auburn's next head coach. He's already accepted the job.

-Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz was talking to LSU, Florida and Penn State (just signed an extension with Missouri, though).

-Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin was the favorite to land at Florida, but that has flipped to LSU.

LOL I totally forgot about Michigan State's hiring of Pat Fitzgerald. I guess when you see a guy on the board who went 14-31 (including a 7-2 COVID year!) in his final four seasons at the only school he's ever known, you have to take him!

That's not exactly an upgrade in quality of program; maybe in salary. Wasn't he the highest paid MAC coach at something like $1.2 million? (going from memory here)
