The three MAC teams we've played have lost by an average of 10.7 pts in the week before they played us (UMass by 11; Buffalo by 7; Akron by 14).  We've beaten them by about half that, an average of 5.3 pts (UMass 3; Buffalo 7; Akron 6).  The first two teams lost the game after playing us by an average of 40 pts (UMass 38 at WMU; Buffalo 42 at NIU).  Could they be so focused and/or cranked for their game with us that they have nothing left the next week?  It'll be interesting to see how Akron does at home vs. NIU next week.

I'd like to think we are a bullseye game for our opponents and that we are taking their best shot every week.  The high school I went to has won its conference 17 of the last 20 years.  We often get close games from teams who were blown out the week before by a .500 team.

I learned a long time ago that you cannot apply the Pythagorean thereom to college football.

EMU pushed Toledo to the brink today.

I do firmly believe that we can illafford two losses this year in conference and expect to make it to Detroit.

Our offense will put up points every game.  We need the defense to overachieve.

Why not face the fact that we were lucky to escape with Wins in all 3 games. Trying to justify "underperformance" against the "weak sisters" is grasping at straws IMO. Anyone who wants to imply that we played well at UMass, Buffalo or today against Akron didn't see the same games I saw. Thank you opponents for the turnovers ....

As much as I want an undefeated season, and as loyal a Bobcat alum as I am, our chances of going undefeated season are very slim unless we (1) get more injured players back QUICKLY and (2) play as we did the 1st 3 games of the year.  I suspect we crack the top 25 this week and then drop out when we lose a game, which we will if we keep up the same level of performance as we've seen the past 3 games.

We were better today.  A couple near misses on special teams, but no disasters.  Defense was making more tackles than they missed.  3rd down against percentage improved a hair.  Rushing yards allowed cut in half from the previous two games.  TOP tipped to our side this game.

But it's hard to believe that either NIU or WMU is THAT much better than Ohio, even with all our injuries.  Yes, we haven't played well, but the MAC teams are probably gunning for us and having a big letdown afterwards, which has helped to make the next opponent look better.  I think it's a testament to our depth and our coaching staff that we came away with wins.

As I eluded to earlier, Ohio A&M could only beat one of the worst teams in the B1G by 3.   These things happen.  Ball State, BTW, beat the same Indiana team by 2.  A&M is getting a lot of team's best shots, Ohio is getting a lot of team's best shots.  This is a strange year for college football.  One of the worst teams in the MAC (CMU) beat Iowa, who this week beat one of the B1G's best -- Michigan State.  I think many here don't realize that there is more parity in college football this year than I can ever remember.  The differences between #1 and #125 aren't as big as they used to be.  On any given Saturday (or Wednesday, or Tuesday, if you're in the MAC in November) any team can beat any other.  You can't take anyone for granted. GO OHIO!

Guessing you never played football beyond the pee-wee level. We have been given games. Rose colored glasses help to justify the poor performance against anemic competition I guess, huh? HINT: Watch the game unbiased; as if you were NOT an Ohio alum. Then think and re-post.

We're not far from being 4-3 or 5-2 as opposed to 7-0. I bleed Ohio green as much as anybody but I also  "see" the games without being prejudiced and biased. Our record is better than than what we've shown.

Akron lost to Miami by 7...BG by 14 and Tennessee by 21. The fact that they lost these games doesn't make the a horrible team. Maybe you should put aside whatever it is that makes you so bitter snd watch the game again?

Jerry, I'm going to have to disagree with you. The only foe this year that really turned the ball over an unusual number of times was Norfolk State, who had 2 picks and 3 fumbles lost. Other than that the Bobcats have been on the receiving end of 13 turnovers in 6 games, about 2 a game, which is pretty normal. What is not normal is that in 7 games the Bobcats have only turned the ball over 3 times. They have lost two fumbles, one against NMSU, the other against Marshall, and had one interception against Buffalo.

Won't disagree that 2 TO's/game is near normal.  But to defeat UMass, Buffalo and Akron by less than a touchdown is worrisome IMO.

Not sure who your post is directed towards ... but if me .. I have 3 degrees, all in Math oriented areas. Then again, a post from a guy who took what, 6, 7 years to graduate .. nuff said.  I had 3 degrees in 6 years. And to repeat, I have forgotten more about football than you'll ever know.

PS I think I've seen photos of you .. so I know you never played football ..

Then you might want to look over the numbers again.

You don't know when I graduated or how long it took me, so don't pretend you do. And what does this have to do with Akron?

That's not good. You should try to retain some of that knowledge.

You know I've never played football because you think you have seen some pictures of me? And if you have (not unlikely at all), you can determine from those photos if I've ever played football? That's a pretty special skill. But, grandstanding aside, I'll ask again: What does this have to do with Akron?

Jerry sounds like the type of dude that would kick Jessica Alba out of bed because she has a freckle on her left pinky finger.

Always trying to find something negative must be a terrible way to go through life.

In the meantime, I'll just continue to enjoy every win and I don't care if each win is by one point the rest of the way.

#7-0

They played well enough to win, but no better. Is this reflective of their potential? Do they have the ability to play better when they play harder foes?  Is it just because of the injuries, or is this just an indication that this is how good they are?

There are more questions I can ask, too, but I'm not going to, nor am I going to try to answer those I already asked. Instead I'm just going to relax, enjoy the 7-0 start, and not worry about anything but Miami for the next couple weeks. If they get ranked, they get ranked, and there is nothing wrong with that. It's great publicity, and will also help with recruiting. I agree that Ohio isn't playing well enough right now to belong in the Top 25, but that won't keep me from hoping they get ranked, nor from hoping they play better down the road, and manage to finish undefeated.

That's perfectly said and all that really needs to be said. Nothing to do but get excited about a stretch run against a pretty tough slate of games.

I absolutely disagree that Akron is weak; some of those scores are misleading.  Akron was tied with Tennessee at halftime 23-23 and only down one field goal in the later part of the 3rd quarter.  And that against an SEC team on the road.  Against BG Akron was up at halftime 10-0.  We discussed Akron the week before in a prior thread-they're similar to Ohio's 2005 team, they play everyone tough.  And Akron's injury situation is almost as bad as ours-they were without the servcies of two of their better defensive players yesterday.

In fact, I was more nervous about Akron than I am about Miami.  Terry Bowden's a better coach than Miami's and I think Akron's passing game is every bit as good as Miami's if not better; heading into yesterday's game Akron had the 8th ranked passing attack in the country. In two years, if Bowden's still at Akron, Akron will be one of the top MAC East teams.

How well Akron loses isn't really important. What's important is that in the eyes of the coaches poll voters and the microchips of the computers, Ohio gets very little credit for beating Akron and Buffalo. Our feelings about those teams matter very little. To impress the coaches poll voters, Ohio needs to throttle those teams.

Were you at this game?  It was in hand from the opening whistle.  One 2nd quarter drop in the end zone kept it from being a complete blow-out.  Did they close in the end due to prevent D and a little too conservative O?  Yeah but in case you haven't noticed, that's how Coach Burrow has been scheming with a very young secondary.  Maybe you could give them a call and let them benefit from your understanding of the game though, I mean they're clearly floundering.

I can't for the life of me tell what you're attempting to say here.  I put those numbers (facts) in front of you.  For someone that "understands the game" you sure like to focus solely on the win / loss column.  You seem to want to discount the majority of Ohio's wins as lucky but are quick to categorize all of Akron's losses as "weak" regardless of score, quality of opposition, etc.

Some people are complaining just to complain, some of us are sounding like Buckeye fans folks. Enjoy the ride, 10 years ago if I said we will be 7-0 on the verge of being ranked and some people would bitch because we didn't beat Akron by 40 you all would of called me crazy. So here we are, I guess this is the big time...

It's tough to keep the expectation-to-contentedness ratio at a healthy level the more a team wins, I find.
