Pete Fiutak doesn't agree Ohio should be ranked as high as they are in his latest Cavalcade of Whimsy.

http://cfn.scout.com/2/1232706.html

He makes valid points which are very arguable. However, I wonder if he's taken the time to look at Ohio's injury situation and the fact that they keep winning despite of that.

Given that the entire column is nothing but one bitch session, it can be discounted.  The guy obviously gets paid to complain or just likes to.

I think any of us can come on here and create a list of teams that are ranked much higher than us who were pushed to the brink and/or defeated by what many believed was "inferior" competition.

No one in the polls seem to hold it against the bigger schools that they have squeaked by the dregs of their respective conferences.  I have resisted saying this yet but we definitely get the best shot from our MAC brethren and we are also playing with a depleted defense.  I hear the chatter about our margin or victory compared to others but I think we would go toe to toe with anyone in our conference and can beat anyone.........but we can lose to anyone either (as can everyone).

This guy leans on shock value in his "writing"...He's basically the Howard Stern of Sports Journalism.  It's reflective of a lack of true skill in his craft if you ask me.  A little bit of research unveils just how impressive Ohio's accomplishments actually are this year.  Why bother though, when you can just rip something apart from afar and stir up the uneducated masses?

Not alone in his opinion. Teamrankings.com, see the link, does not think Ohio beats 5-3 Ball State or Kent.

We have played our worst ball of the year in the past few weeks and have still won.

There are definitely teams in the MAC right now beating us from a margin of victory and style points standpoint but they are due to stub their collective toes in the coming weeks.  This is why I love Frank's "1-0" mentality so much.  Kent, NIU, and Toledo may have looked more impressive lately but the on the stat that matters the most right now we are on the same level-undefeated.  I would say Toledo's squeaker win against EMU is on par with our wins against UMass, Buffs, and 'kron.  Kent and NIU are about due for a tussle with an bottom feeder.

All of this being said I would be more than OK with us rolling off a couple of beatdown victories in coming weeks so I can relax and enjoy the 4th quarter more!

In a way, isn't this the perfect situation?  We're getting enough respect to get ranked solely off our performance (7-0 should do that).  However, Frank's still able to throw out the "Nobody Believes in Us" mantra to the players.  They're the underdog favorites.  They can play with a chip on their shoulder.  During the Norfolk State game, the announcers mentioned that Frank talked to them about his concerns that the players might get a bit too overconfident.  That may have been the case for a couple of weeks.  Now Frank can go to them and let them know that nobody thinks they can do the unthinkable.  They're on borrowed time according to the analysts.  The only ones who can prove them wrong are the players.

I sort of hope this continues, where we get ranked high enough to where we deserve (and I think #23/24 is our current ceiling) but also do not allow ourselves to get too sure of ourselves.  If I were a conspiracy theorist, I might start to believe that Frank intended those couple of games before the break to be tight so that the players maintain their focus.

Those numbers are very, very similar to mine. As things stand now, Ohio will be an underdog against both Ball State and Kent by a couple points. I also compute that Kent, which has an easier remaining schedule (both play BG and Miami, Ohio has Ball State and EMU while Kent has Akron) has slightly higher odds of winning the East. Ohio has only about a 12% chance of going 12-0.

I also agree that NIU is the clear favorite in the west.

I wouldn't say he doesn't do his research, as that website is one of the more detailed you will find when it comes to college football. Not quite as in-depth as Phil Steele might be, but certainly not as bad as some others I've come across. I just think he puts the BCS conference teams ahead of non-BCS teams because that's what drives the masses and ratings. If he were to sit on his website and talk about non-AQs all day, his website wouldn't be visited as much as it is. That being said, and as I said in my original post, I doubt he has looked closer than the box scores and recaps from the Associated Press.

I don't think Ohio is necessarily as good as people think, because the last three weeks have definitely shown that we are lacking some areas. But if you're undefeated at this point in the season eight weeks in, that's pretty impressive and deserving of a ranking, regardless of who you've played or how you beat them. That's the only thing I was upset about.

As Coach has mentioned, younger players have been building valuable experience while at the same time putting together an undefeated season that so many seem displeased with.

As I've said already, the last time this offense was healthy it put up almost 600 yds.  They seem back to as healthy as one can expect at this stage of the season.  This combined with the experience our young secondary has compiled throughout this season should make for a performance that will silence some of this criticality.

Actually, what am I saying?  Then it will be "it was just Miami" (they can't run) or "it was just Eastern" (Ball State, Toledo and Michigan State must have been sleeping).

Ohio isn't as good as some people think, nor as bad as others think. What matters at this point is that they still have the eyepatch, and now they have a target on their back, too, from the Top 25 ranking. There is a long way to go, but I believe they can do this.

I continue to be amused by the value placed on margin of victory over horrible teams. NIU beat up on Akron and Buffalo, great. How'd they do against Iowa?

And that is why they play the games. In my opinion, if Ohio goes undefeated in the regular season and champion game, Ohio deserves to be in the Top 25 and get a BCS game - an undefeated season is an accomplishment and the polls and computers will reflect that.

The rankings in midseason are meaningless, except for the PR that comes with being ranked.

I can agree to that. In large part, I would say the jury is still out. We haven't seen Ohio's best ball by a long shot. We may have seen their worst though, and they've still won.

In my opinion an undefeated, MAC Champion Ohio would deserve a BCS game.  If they get there they will have climbed a much higher hill than I expected it to be.

I have no issue with what the writer said. This team will either improve or they'll lose 2 maybe 3 games.

I don't follow this writer, nor do I endorse him. But in reading this article on Ohio, he has his facts correct and shares his opinion about Ohio being the third best team in the MAC. Hey, at least the MAC is getting noticed for its top teams.

Huh? Everything he stated is fact. We squeeked by horrible teams that NIU and Toledo hammered. I want us as the next alum to stay ranked but we're struggling big time. Are we the best 23rd or 24th team in the country? IMO we aren't at this time. With injured guys back on the field we may be. Sometimes we have to take off the rose colored glasses and see things for what they are. If we win out then we deserve a top 25 ranking. Otherwise, we don't. Look at our schedule and the W-L percentage of our opponents ...........

I definitely agree that we need to start playing a lot better.

But may we, please, stop with the seriously inane 'we're not top 25 material' posts.  Yes we are, at least right now.  If it's so easy to be undefeated, then why have so very few teams achieved that with the season only about 60% done.

Please get your M.O.:  That we have not stumbled in any one game means that we are top 25.

I love how this argument only applies when beating up on our own team...

NIU beat Army by 1 pt (Army lost to Stony Brook by 20)...

Toledo Beat Coastal Carolina by a whopping 10 pts at home...

Ohio beat Norfolk State by 34 with our back-up QB getting his first start...

Are Toledo's win over Cinci and NIU's 1 pt loss to Iowa impressive?  Yeah but certainly not any more impressive than our win over Penn State...

While we're at it...Let's examine how Cinci "earned" their ranking prior to their loss to Toledo...

Their 2012 schedule to date had included 2 open dates...A 16 pt victory over Delaware State...A 2nd win over another FCS team and wins over Miami OH, Pitt and VA Tech (their only away game to date)...

Is VA Tech any better than Penn State?  Is Pitt any better than Marshall?

Nope but by golly Toledo beat a RANKED team!  They must be a serious force!
