I apologize if this topic has been covered before. I have not seen it anywhere myself.
The P5 school in Norman, Oklahoma goes by the OU moniker just like we do. They have done so for many years. Naturally, over all of the years that I have followed sports I just presumed that the name of the school was Oklahoma University, similar to our name. But last week I was watching their football game on TV and as is customary there is an ad for the school during a commercial break. So the ad starts showing some buildings on campus with the name University of Oklahoma on the buildings. I thought that can't be, after all they go by OU. I looked up the school on the internet as a double-check and sure enough the school really is the University of Oklahoma. So the OU moniker doesn't fit them. Strange.
I then looked up the only other school with a large sports program that could possibly be an OU, that is Oregon. Yes, they too are the University of Oregon. So there it is. Among the larger schools at least, we are the only real and true OU.
This is a B12 thing. The University of Kansas is known as KU. Former and future member, the University of Colorado goes by CU. Former member the University of Missouri sometimes calls themselves MU, though Mizzou is more common. I guess in that part of the country they are all just a little dyslexic.
