Thanks for the excellent explanation of how this works. Lawrence was able to play, as the Jags edged out New Orleans. Will Rourke go back to the practice squad now? My guess is that until Lawrence is 100%, Nathan will remain in the emergency #3 QB position (in the 53 on the roster, but not in the 46 allowed to play, which allows him to step in and play if the top 2 QBs are both medically unable to play), which means a bigger paycheck for him.
I've read a little too much on this - didn't see anything that specifically mentioned game checks, just that the 3rd QB is still considered inactive, and cannot enter the game for any reason other than injury to the QB. If the 2nd QB loses his helmet, or is taking a dump or something - 3rd QB cannot run onto the field take the snap.

And the weirdest part - once in the game NO ONE ELSE can take a snap. No trick plays. No wildcat. No TE's lining up under center. Only your 3rd QB can take snaps.

How bizarre.

More arbitrary rules where the nfl is just outthinking itself. like the catch rules with "football moves".

Yes, the term "football move" always gets me. I guess it means he can't dribble the ball or something.

It's not hard to understand.

Nathan was waived again, and then re-signed to the practice squad:

Trevor Lawrence injured his ankle last night.
Initial reports are some type of sprain.

Depending on what the MRI shows, he could be out for a while.

Jags could put Nathan back on the active roster.

Wouldn't wish injuries on any team - especially as a Browns fan - but I think Rourke will be announced as the #2 next week.

Unfortunately (sorry CJ and friends) Beathard looked pretty good moving the offense last night, but still exciting that Nathan will probably get some work in with the #1's in practice - just in case.

I know we have had some guys who were on OUr roster, at least partially as quarterbacks, play in the NFL. I think Phil Bates is the most recent. However, I do not believe that someone who was on our roster as a QB has EVER taken a snap from center in the NFL while on the NFL roster as a quarterback. Let me know if this isn't the case.

Division 1 split for football in 1978. There are only about 103 programs that were FBS/1A that whole time. I wonder if that is a true fact about Ohio quarterbacks never playing in the NFL if we are the only one program of those 103 or so for which it is.

Yeah, it looks like he does. It looks like he might have been originally considered a running back but he had 241 career passes and it looks like he was indeed listed as a QB at least in his last year in 1943. He has to count.

Looks like a high ankle sprain. CBS says his status for the Browns game is "unclear."
