...It is not "entitlement" to wonder why, in his 8'th (?) season of building this program, Solich can't put away teams like Akron and Buffalo (at home) in semi-convincing fashion.
First of all, you will find no mention of the Akron and Buffalo games in my comments. No one thinks that Ohio played to their potential in those games. Secondly, I also didn't comment on the hopes of a top 25 ranking, nor a BCS bowl because I think it is a good thing to hope for that. The problem comes when you go from a hoping for a Top 25 Rank/BCS bowl to expecting it. I posted at the beginning of the season that at best there was a 10% chance that it could happen. As all the injuries occurred, those odds probably went down, and the weak performances against U.Mass, Akron, and Buffalo should have been a warning that this was probably not the season when that might happen.
I have no problem with dreaming big, but I also think it is healthy to accept reality. Defining the line between "success" and "failure" in terms of whether they are undefeated, in the Top 25, and in a BCS bowl is simply not realistic. Hope for it yes, but expect it, no. The other thing I mentioned that bothered me was people complaining about the win over EMU, that somehow a 31 point margin wasn't enough, or that 300 yards of rushing wasn't establishing a run game. Coach Solich, in his press conference, called the EMU game probably the best overall game this year, and it was one of the largest margins of victory under Solich, so I don't know why people are drawing the defining line between "success" and "failure" at an even higher point.
My other point is that this is still the early stages of this change. I have predicted that Ohio will never again fail to win 10 games until Solich retires. The more the teams do that, the more people will draw the line between "success" and "failure" at ever higher points. Even if they fail to win 10 some years, I won't be down on the team however. As long time posters recall, back in about 2007 I predicted an undefeated season for the Bobcats in 2011, which raised a lot of eyebrows at the time. Even though that didn't happen, I think 2011 was still an outstanding season, and they accomplished a lot.
Logan, yes, I know what other boards are like. That's why I'm not on those boards. As this board becomes increasingly like those, I will probably gradually vanish, and only post infrequently. It isn't a bad thing - I will have enjoyed my time here, and met many nice people, and had many interesting conversations. I'll just be a dinosaur, and my time will have passed.
