I've said it until I am blue in the face and I will keep saying it...we do NOT recruit the top talent in the MAC. Say what you want about stars but we do not get enough 3 star type guys to "finish business". We have definitely gotten to the middle of the pack but we are light years from the NIUs and Toledos. Even BG, Miami and Kent will all have beaten this year (shortly). Really disappointed that after 8 years we haven't taken it to the "next level"!
It has been a slow steady climb. As I said on another thread, there have been 3 distinct stages in recruiting:
2005-2007 - Almost all the recruits were under-the-radar players. Few had any other offers. Most of the time the recruiting services didn't even know they existed. That didn't mean there weren't some players in there.
2008-2010 - About half of the recruits had other offers. Many were players that the services missed because they had been injured their Junior or Senior year, or because they changed positions. Guys that fit that mold were Carrie, Brazill, TT, Woseley and Dovell.
2011-2013 - During this period there was a dramatic jump in the visibility of Ohio recruits. Now all of them, or virtually all of them, are known to the major recruiting services. Almost all of them have at least 1-4 offers, and some have picked Ohio over 7 other alternatives. What is new in 2013 is that the class is also filling early, and we are seeing recruits taking Ohio as a first choice, not as a last minute decision.
Places like Toledo, BG, and Miami have always gotten recruits like those we are now seeing. Ohio managed to be competitive with those schools even with under-the-radar recruits. I can only imagine that Ohio will do even better with those they are bringing in now.
Even now is Ohio recruiting "the top talent in the MAC"? Probably not, but they are a lot closer, and they can see it from here. Fortunately, however, I don't think they need the top talent - they just need competitive talent, and they have that. There are a number of your "three star guys" in the 2013 class. The ratings have not all been done, and there will be much re-rating upwards in the next couple months, if this year is like others, but even now there are six players already rated 3 stars by at least one service:
Zachary Murdock - Rivals
James Walsh - Rivals, ESPN, 247Sports
Leon Alexander - Scout
Justin Wyatt - ESPN
Cedric Brown - 247Sports
Mason Morgan - 247 Sports
