Harris:

Boise: 17 (Last week 21)
Kent: 18 (Last week 25)
NIU: 19 (Last week 24)

Voters have to leapfrog the MAC Champ over Boise State. That win would be better than any win Boise State had all season.

Most of the voters in the polls go on name recognition and reputation.  To their credit, though, Boise played no 1AA schools and had six bowl eligible teams on their schedule: the other four in their conference plus BYU and MSU.  Kent had only four bowl eligible teams (BSU, Rutgers, BG and Ohio) and had a 1AA school.  NIU had three bowl eligible teams (BSU, CMU, Toledo) and a 1AA school.

Boise's credentials are all well and good, but that doesn't explain how they suddenly jump 7 spots without playing, leapfrogging teams that did play - and won.

Know what DOES explain it? ESPN didn't pay a kajillion dollars to broadcast Kent State in a major bowl game. At least with Boise, they would have a brand-name "little guy."

Remember when we used to argue if Ohio could get out of the ESPN Bottom 10?  Ah... the good old days!

Kent St has the best shot, they should be in the top 20 BCS after this week. They will get drilled by NIU in the MACC though.

Kent handled Rutgers on the road when RU was ranked #15.  They also just handled our Bobcats easily, even after they had wrapped up the MAC East title.

They won't get drilled by NIU.  In fact, there's a good chance Kent beats Northern and is BCS-eligible.

Fairly clear explanation of KSU's BCS Bowl possibilities:

And Jerry Palm's take on the situation.  The interesting nugget in his article:

"Just to be clear -- the best case scenario in terms of results doesn't guarantee Kent State moves up. It just gives them a chance.

This is assuming traditional voting patterns. If voters get spooked at the idea of Kent State in the BCS, they could slide."

Logic often gives way to bias when it comes to polls.

I'd put my money on NIU.  And yours.

I expect Kent to come out really jacked -- maybe over-jacked -- because it's the school's first-ever trip to the MACC game.  NIU has been there the past two years, so they should be under control.  If Kent can avoid early-game mistakes due to nerves/emotion, they should be able to take NIU.  If not, they could deflate pretty quickly and it could get ugly.

My advice to Kent?  Don't jump out to a 20-0 lead at halftime.

Kent won't have the jitters.  Go to espn3.com and watch their archived game with Rutgers.  These guys play with swagger.  I must admit, though, in have no explanation for what happened at UK.

I'm getting so sick of the elitist media downplaying Kent State and the MAC and how they're not deserving of a BCS bowl.  So it's fine if Boise gets a BCS bid but not a Mac team?  Give me a break already.  The fact is that the Mac already has to go the extra mile just to have any shot at one of these games, and now the media wants to downgrade the accomplishment and badmouth the conference.  The crappy Big East has been getting these BCS games for years so I don't want to hear any more griping from them if Kent St gets a shot.  Please shut up national media and BCS conference honks.

I love the fact that the MAC is stronger than the Big East.  Awesome that a MAC Team has a shot at the BCS.

Only if the CATS could have finished the season we would have been a lock in the BCS.  Oh well, we should be very strong next season.
