Doeren celebrated by heading to Raleigh and taking the NCSU job. Rod Carey will serve as head coach for now.

Good for him.  He did an amazing job at NIU, his teams get better over the course of the year, and he deserves the step up to the ACC.

He could continue his high winning % in the ACC.  Clemson and Florida State are good but not dominant.

That escalated quickly.

One site I saw said Carey may be promoted to head coach, not just interim for the Bowl.

How sad that even in a potential BCS game, NIU would have an interim coach.

NCAA needs to step in on it. Make them off limits to other teams like basketball.

Not that uncommon.  Happened with Kelly before BCS game with Cinci, and he took the ND job.  Just part of the marketplace...coaches can also be fired mid-season, just like any job.

It sucks for the MAC generally and NIU in particular, but I can understand NC State wanting him to start immediately. Recruiting, staff assembly, etc, lots of work to be done.

Well aware of the past. Never see it with basketball.

All Non-AQ coaches: vote NIU #1 on your final ballot. Do it for the $$

I know it's happened before, but strange that he would leave before playing in a BCS bowl game because at NC State he will never get close to making it to one.

Strike while the iron is hot.  If NIU were to play in a BCS game (not guaranteed) and get blown out, his stock might have diminished.  Plus, NCSt isn't going to wait a month to fill the position, with the recruiting deadline in early Feb, and God knows what might be available in Jan.
