Supposedly the Jags head coach said there is no battle for the QB2 position. Nathan will be the QB3 on the depth chart. Many Jags fans aren’t happy with that decision.

That might be the best for Nathan, as according to some fans who follow the NFL much more closely than I do, he's very likely to be picked up off waivers.

I listed to the end of their game on Sirius XM yesterday with the Jags broadcast team and all the guys on there agreed Nathan outplayed Beathard in both games, but they’d go with him for the experience.

As the Emergency QB - the Jags will not need to put Nathan on waivers (so no need to clear waivers) - he will be a "piggyback" on the roster. He's had an excellent preseason - and "outplayed" Beathard, but their fans need to remember Beathard has played against 1st and 2nd teamers and Nathan has played against 3rd and 4th teamers. Huge difference between preseason and regular season. He's placing right where he should.

Have they committed to making him the "emergency QB"? That would mean that they'd keep him on the 53-man roster. Last year only about three or four teams exercised this new rule. I hope that the Jags do, but I have only seen speculation, no statement from them that they are going to do it.

Hmm . . . I just checked. You are right. What the article I read said was that only about a third of NFL teams last year carried three QBs on their rosters, but that was before the new rule. I just assumed that was because of the new rule, but you know what they say about ASS-U-ME! In this case it's just ME! ;-)

So, question: What exactly does this new rule add since some teams already did have three QBs last year? Designating an "emergency QB" doesn't add an additional man to the roster. So, what's that designation really signify and what's the advantage of invoking it?

I have to believe that more teams will keep 3 Quarterbacks on the 53 man but a far cry from all of them will. That 53rd spot will still have a lot to do with who you want to keep off waivers and who might be on the gameday active 48 man roster in a given week and less to do with the emergency rule. If you want to avoid another fiasco the emergency QB should also be able to be on the 69 man roster to which Rourke at least will be on a practice squad. The odds of Jacksonville seeing a 3rd QB on waivers in about a week that they would claim and then decide to not keep him and then nobody else claim him are very low I believe. If they don't put him on their 53 man though someone else will have a chance to claim him and do so themselves if they are willing to use one of their 53 man roster spots on him.

In the first game, against Dallas, Nathan was 9-17 for 153 yards and a TD, which was his unbelievable throw under pressure. His QB rating was 103.3, compared with Lawrence at 91.7 and Beathard at 66.2. Here is a video of all his throws and runs against Dallas:

In the second game, against Detroit, he was 10-12 for 121 yards and a QB rating of 108.7. Lawrence didn't play, and Beathard was 12-20 for 138 yards, with a TD and an interception, giving him a QB rating of 76.7. Nathan highlights start at 3:08:

I honestly think AZ would be better suited with Rourke than Dobbs, and I'm a Dobbs guy.

Lack of NFL experience really hurting him right now.

I don't know NFL cap rules or the CBA well. What does this mean for his contract? He was slated to make 750k. Does his contract move with him if he clears waivers, or is he forced to sign a new practice squad contract?

NFL contracts are not guaranteed.

However, the rookie minimum is $750K - so he would make that if he was on the 53-man.

Practice squad players make $11,500 per week or $207,000 for 18 weeks. Veteran players with over two years of experience will make a minimum of $15,400 per week or $277,200 for 18 weeks, and a maximum of $19,900 per week or $358,200.

Some contracts are mostly guaranteed. Its what a "signing bonus" basically is and the size of the guarantee is what was the main point of contention between Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. But a player like Rourke won't have a guarantee.

He would have gotten a big raise from the BC Lions and I'll bet that would have made a lot more than $207,000 in the CFL.

According the some folks on a Jaguars board C.J. Beathard is basically Trevor Lawrence's best friend and has been something of a mentor and they were never likely to subject him to waivers because Lawrence is the franchise. The Jaguars apparently don't want to carry 3 quarterbacks on the 53 man to protect him or for the emergency QB rule.

I seriously doubt any team will claim a rookie off waivers who has had no NFL experience and no time at all in their system in camp as their backup quarterback to start the season. It is likely his best chance to be claimed off waivers is for a team that is not happy with any of their backup quarterbacks that they have in camp (Bengals?) to use three spots on their 53 man on quarterbacks in hopes there is a chance he'd rise to be the backup at some point during the season in spite of knowing that Jacksonville didn't think he was worth a roster spot. Only a few teams had three rostered quarterbacks last year but you have to believe a few more will this year with the new rule. Most of those same Jaguar fans do not think he'll clear waivers. At even odds I think I'd bet that he will clear waivers but it will be interesting to see what happens.

I just googled quickly, and it seems like the top paid players in the CFL still make below 100k. So that practice squad money's likely still an upgrade. The highest paid guy I saw (admittedly I didn't look all that hard) was t $175k Canadian. That's like ~130k US.

But still a bummer for Rourke. To go out and perform like he did in pre-season and not maintain an active roster spot is tough, though maybe Jacksonville was clear about this as the plan all along.

The figure I saw recently was that 12 NFL teams carried three QBs on their 53-man roster last year.

cards just waived mccoy. murray out for at least first 4 games. only have dobbs and a 5th rounder on roster. depending in who else (qbs in league) get waived could be an option. cards must have something in mind to make these moves now. or they are prepared to tank for caleb williams.

Highest paid CFL players are pretty much the guys you'd expect:
Zach Collaros Winnipeg $550,000
Cody Fajardo Saskatchewan $467,000
Jeremiah Masoli Ottawa $432,000
Bo Levi Mitchell Calgary $425,000

To which this would be diminished with the exchange rate but I still think he would have beaten rookie practice squad money. And I think he'd become easily the most popular player in Canada because he's Canadian. He would have had some endorsement money coming his way if he has stayed. Probably not millions like star NFL QB's but compared to $207000 I think it would help make a comparable dent.

Rourke still had one year remaining on hir rookie CFL contract. I think he was going to make around $85k. The contract give a player an out to go to the NFL. Next year he will be a CFL free agent. I can almost guarantee he will be on the practice roster so he will make more this year.

I would love to know the thought process Rourke used to choose Jacksonville. I assume he was avoiding teams who would likely be drafting somebody. There seemed to be better options than Jacksonville to secure a roster spot.

I don't see how Nathan could have been any more impressive in his time on the field for Jacksonville. We shall see if he can make a deal with another team to be a backup, and if not, whether he'd rather be back in the CFL, or on a practice squad.

This is something we really have not discussed much. He is free to join another team on their practice squad as an option if nobody claims him now as well
