The BL had estimated over $100M but Dennis Dodd says that it may go as low as $60M, which could give Boise and others an out.  He reports that Google may be in on the bidding.

Hmmm...If MAC presidents and ADs were thinking creatively and big, they just might begin campaigning systematically and aggressively - read publicly - with the AQ conferences to replace the Big East with the MAC.

Campaign platform to begin with MAC vs Big East in 2012:

WMU over UConn
Ball State over South Florida
Toledo over Cincy
Kent State over Rutgers

Then cite the MAC's 2011 bowl record: 4-1.

Then cite the MAC's more entertaining brand of football.

Then cite its continuing willingness to schedule to accommodate ESPN.

And keep hammering on the platform, right on through till next season.

Not bad thoughts at all.  Along those same lines, it should help the MAC immensely if we as a conference can repeat last year's bowl success.  By this I mean that if all or most of the MAC teams win their respective bowls, and if NIU does what I think it can do and win, the rest of the college football world can not ignore us.  Further, if this happens there needs to be a serious discussion amongst the MAC schools on ways to capitalize on that success, whatever that may be.  In the end if all of this does come about, the MAC should be able to parley all of this success into more $$$ for the conference.  That may mean introducing MAC2, the new and improved MAC with some current members gone and some new members in.  Maybe we can replace the BE, we certainly owned them on the upper levels of both conferences this year.

I know it wouldn't happen, but if UC were to join us in MAC football along with Army, or UCONN. We could seriously be considered as the 5th or 6th best conference.

This is all nice, but the only thing that TV stations care is how many people watch us.  While we may have an entertaining brand of football, we still don't draw the numbers.

Ok, Ohio might be able to bring in the numbers, but we still got teams like Ball State, Kent, EMU, Akron, BG, and UMASS that still draw absolutely tiny numbers.  I dont' see us getting more money than the Big East in their new TV deal.

My biggest question/concern is if the MAC brass is banging on the doors of companies like those mentioned in this post saying "look at us! look at us!  check us out! ".

My gut tells me that they are probably not and are instead looking to pick up scraps leftover, because that's the easier way of doing things.  Watching our lame commercials (the one in the restaurant isn't too bad) shows me how capable our marketing team is at the conference office.

If NIU can take out FSU and I believe they can ala Boise vs. OK a few years ago but then nothing more comes from it in terms of respect  then it will be clearer than ever for me that college football and its management/leadership at the highest levels are nothing more than a glorified group of popular middle school girls deciding who is cool enough and who is not cool enough to be invited to their party.

Even with a win I will still see it spun as some kind of cute little Cinderella story for entertainment.

Heck I can remember after Boise beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta, VT in DC, and took UGA behind the woodshed in Atlanta they still were not given their due, especially last year.  They lost one game to a team who had won the Rose Bowl one year before but they may as well have lost to Hocking College.

I am not saying we are the best but we are not as bad or inferior as ESPN and the like want you to believe.

OUcats82, I agree about the MAC Front Office doing something.  I am not sure how far they can get, and it may involve reshaping the league, but at least think outside the box for once.  If the MAC Front Office takes the path of least resistence, then perhaps some of its members may need to have a serious discussion among themselves and with other teams currently outside the conference and develop a new league entirely.  Further, if that occurs I hope it is not with some team from the A-10, CAA or Sun Belt for football.  I am thinking more along the lines of current BE members as well as maybe a few from CUSA.  I realize this may all be a pipe dream, but if we can achieve the level of success I believe we can as a conference in these upcoing bowl games (including NIU), we may have an opportunity of a lifetime.

I think you may be on to something.  Anything that may have seemed impossible before may as well be considered now.  I mean the Big whatever now expands from the Atlantic to the border of the Mountain Time Zone now?!

I don't want the MAC to change for change sake but I have been a little concerned that we have just been standing back and watching.  On the one hand I appreciate the stability but on the other I am nervous that we may miss out on the chance to do something big.

This alleged contract.. which Mike Aresco has already said was a false report... would still make Boise more money than they are now.

Are you serious about the MAC replacing the Big East?

Well, standing back and watching has netted the MAC 7(SEVEN!!) bowl games this year.  Including a BCS Bowl which to me qualifies as big.  Adam Sandler would say...Not too shabby!
