This news is fantastic and made my day. In my opinion the IPF was the missing piece to Ohio's consistently being the elite football and hoops power in the MAC. If Ohio lacked one big piece versus some other programs this was it.
My thought process is that the success and consistency that Solich is building here plus the facilities give Ohio the real trump card versus other MAC schools. This is so much bigger than just football and basketball I assume everyone benefits wresting, softball, baseball etc all benefit. Truly a great day to be a Bobcat.

Randy...are you saying that money was wasted in the past by not combining a student rec center (Ping Center) with the idea for an extra practice gym for varsity sports?

It's very hard to understand a thing that randy types, but Solich will be around for awhile.  He doesn't plan on taking another job.  He's an Ohio guy who wants to stay in Ohio, or thats atleast what a familt friend told me.

Even with the NO Bowl loss, this announcement has me jazzed!!  We'll get there in time.  Let's not forget the possibilities for Ohio this announcement now affords.

If he's not, I will.  And, its my understanding the Recreation folks fought including athletics big time back then.  Could be "urban legend" though.

Spectacular and unexpected news straight away as I come into the apartment from NO.  Certainly helped cheer me after the long ride home!

This is exactly the kind of thing the experience we all had while spending those special years in Athens generates.  We as Alumni have been indebted to the Walter's for quite some time now; this gesture moves that gratitude to a new level as a Bobcat Athletics fan!

Bob's feelings towards his Alma Mater are no secret here in Central Ohio (Cardinal Health's corporate home).  I have a few friends employed by Cardinal and have heard numerous stories of him stopping in to an office for an extensive chat when he saw an Ohio degree or other decoration on the wall.

Bob, Peggy and the Walter Foundation...THANK YOU from the bottom of our collective hearts as both fans and Alumni!  Your generosity is the final step on the springboard to the next level of competiveness for the variety of programs that will benefit from this facility.  It will forever be known as the foundation of the newly remodeled "Front Porch" of Ohio's First and Finest!

It is not urban legend, the Ping Center was paid for and by the student via student recreation fee. The idea of shutting down any portion of the center for Varsity Athletics was frowned upon - although they did't have any problems shutting down portions for fundraising activities :)

as mentioned on here in the past It may be far more economical to attach arena to Peden in such a way the basic  structure could be used in adding seats (deck) to the stadium in the future such as was done at Eastern Ky.  More bang for the buck and stadium could be enlarged to 30 t0 32,000  or more down the line.

The last design I've looked at 4-5 years ago had the IPF going attached to Peden very much like you've described. Boeh wanted it by the soccer field and Hocutt moved it to Peden Stadium. With a skeptical climate on campus toward athletic spending the design may be trending toward more of a student based facility. Then it would make more sense to have it seperate from Peden with a nice entrance facing South Green drive. As for the additional seats in Peden the trend today is for smaller capacities in the MAC. The Michigan schools are are over 30k+ all the other MAC schools are now in the 25-27k range for the football stadium. Marshall made the mistake of going to 38,000 seats and now with the team in the tank its regularly 50% full. I think it would make more sense for Ohio to redo the stands with a higher pitch and flll in the first few rows. Give the home stands a bigger two level look. Add more benchbacks for premium seating potential. You could add 10 more rows a homeside this way and relist the capacity at 27,000.

Wes, you've made the suggestion a few times now to "change the pitch" of the home side of Peden. I honestly don't get it - you do realize that you would eliminate the entry level of the tower, right?  When you increase the pitch, the top of the stands will meet the tower at a different point.  How does that work?

My hope for the design is based on practical, long-term (monetary) considerations and the desire to add some additional sophistication/class to Peden:

1.  Build the IPF directly behind the visitor's stands, allowing you to integrate modern restroom and concessions facilities into the ground floor of the new building.  At the top of the IPF, have one or 2 stories of glassed-in loge seats overlooking the visitor's stands.  This would dramatically enhance the appearance of those stands and look great on TV.  (It would also prevent us from putting a second deck on that side, which I think would be too cost prohibitive anyway.)

2.  If we ever need to add seating, I'd like to see the North side of the stadium closed in with an elevated "U" similar to the two half-shells. This would eliminate the unfinished look of the half-shells and be relatively inexpensive to do. When we need the seating for well-attended games, people will sit there. When those seats are empty, it won't be so obvious to a television audience, as it would if we built a (more expensive) second deck.  Also would like to see the elevated sections extend down to align at bottom with the Phillips and O-Zone seating in the main stands.

My question is what is the total amount needed. This is the lead gift. Do they need $15M in total? $20M? And what's the timeline for raising that? Or is the $10M enough to get started with the assumption the rest will come?

I really like your point number 1. Maybe we could start a ring of honor with space between the stands and the loge seats.

I guess future expansion is a consideration so I'm with you on point 2. Plus, I would like the option to tarp those sections for low attendance games.

I have to believe $10 million just primes the pump. The projects I'm familiar with--that are of this scale--cost well more than 10 million. I would take a wild guess that the cost will be closer to 50 million, depending on what is planned.

Still, getting perhaps 20 percent donated is a huge windfall. I wonder what OU's tax obligation is for getting a 10 million gift?

Edit: I'm basing this on SBH's ideas for stadium addition/renovation.

The Convo has been mentioned as being in the mix for some funds for renovation.  Anyone have any ideas as to what this would entail?

I like SBH's ideas for Peden...

Well what I've heard from my adventures in New Orleans is $5 Million upfront from the Walter family, $5 Million will be willed to the university, and $2 Million of the eventual $10 Million will be allocated for Convo renovations. What that entails, I'm not sure?

What I'd like to see for the Convo:

-A new scoreboard
-Reupholstered seats
-Club-type seating behind the one basket where there's room
-Whatever improvements needed to locker rooms, etc.

If I could add a seemingly petty, but handy item. New hand dryers in the restrooms. Xlerator's maybe. I'm for everything SBH mentioned also - except I want a hanging scoreboard/videoboard.

The miniature training/gym room in the Convo is also about as good as the equipment in my basement. It needs a revamp as well.

I don't believe this Convo renovation money is headed Ohio's way any time soon though, unless by other means than the Walter family. So there is still a need at raising money here, as well as additional funds for the IPF.

Don't forget to do your talking with your wallet, too. Support Ohio Athletics.

What mcbin said.  Every little bit helps.  (Don't get me started on we only had about 11 people in this year's Bobcat Challenge.)  Pop for $15 a month if you're in your 20's, $25 a month in your 30's, $40 a month in 40's, etc.

We're talkin' Ohio University, not some shlub place like redhawk or temples or 'kron.
