These aren't new thoughts, and this guy's a little crazy, but here for your consideration ladies and gentlemen is the latest in conference realignment speculation MAC-style:

I've thought about Army joining the MAC from time to time.  They were part of CUSA once but I think they soured to traveling all over the country.  When they left, they said they didn't want an AQ conference, so they might be amenable, especially with UMass in the mix.  I think Cincy might be interested in hooking up with some of the MAC, like Toledo and NIU, but I doubt they would seriously consider anything unless the MAC started beating AQ schools on a regular basis.

I'm pretty sure Cinci would go to the MAC as an absolute last resort.  Like tried-to-be-an-Independent-for-a-few-years-but-really-needs-a-conference-to-save-their-football-program kind of last resort.

The more reason to bring them in.

Seriously, they would probably compete.  Three of the four losses were against NIU, Kent and BSU.  We lost to two of those.  And we could give them the opportunity to play Navy after the MACCG, if the NCAA would still let them.

UC would join if the MAC picked up UCONN, Marshall, Memphis, and maybe some basketball schools.

Army wants to play a national schedule for recruiting and advertising purposes. They can't do that in as regional a conference as the MAC. Remember, Army doesn't have the same financial incentives as other NCAA squads, and their recruiting leeway is somewhat different as well

This has been around the block twenty times.  I repeat: no way UC lands in the MAC.  End of story.

Cincinnati will never be in the MAC. End of question.

Marshall on the other hand, who knows? If this new Conference USA doesn't work out, maybe they would consider coming back but I even find that scenario highly doubtful.

The MAC is what it is and I think we just have to appreciate that fact. We're never going to be a conference seriously involved in expansion but that's a good thing. We have stability.

There's no plausible scenario for Cincinnati landing in the MAC. Marshall is a different story, but wouldn't we just be enablers at that point?

"Suckers" would be the better descriptive term for the collective "us" if that happens.

Not going to happen, but that would be a terrific pair to add.  Add one more team and make it an even 16, either from Kentucky, Tennessee, or somewhere East.

Dennis Dodd says the next targets for the Big Tenish will be GT and UVA.  I can see Tech.  Neither is a threat for the BT's football or b-ball powers, but Tech would add the Atlanta market for the conf. UVA, however, doesn't add a major market.  The closest major market is DC, but there's little interest there.  Charlottesville is 183 and Richmond is 57.  Maybe UVA's being added for the academics.

If these two leave the ACC, it'll go after UConn and either Cincy or maybe Temps.  The name of the game these days is media markets, and all of them are in or near top 50 markets.

This is not reality at all...but with all the realignment, I'd love seeing the "Ohio conference" be born for all sports but football (ironic that I bring this up on the football board):

Cincinnati
Xavier
Dayton
Wright State
Ohio
Miami
Kent
Akron
Toledo
Bowling Green

It's really a pretty decent hypotehtical conference and would be a lot of fun (and the travel budget would be the lowest in the country!)...but much like the Cincy to the MAC discussion, I think their athetic dept is probably a step above the rest of the crop.  And I know football steers everything...don't judge, it is fun to fantasize about.

As long as you have the likes of Wright State, make it 12.  Add YSU and go for the gem piece to go along with powers, Cincy,X and Dayton; Cleveland State.

Have the tourney in Columbus each season. Reults:  Five bids to the dance!

I have thought about making a 18 team basketball conference and a 12 team football conference

Basketball Only:

Dayton
Butler
Xavier
Duquesne
VCU
Richmond

Football:
UCONN

Full Member:
UMASS
Cincinnati
Marshall
Temple
Ohio
Miami
Kent State
Akron
Toledo
BGSU
Northern Illinois
Buffalo

Basketball Conference:
West:

Dayton
Butler
Cincinnati
Miami
Toledo
BGSU
Xavier
Northern Illinois
Ohio

East:
Richmond
VCU
Marshall
Buffalo
Akron
Kent State
Temple
UMASS
Duquense

Football Conference:

West:
Northern Illinois
BGSU
Toledo
Cincinnati
Ohio
Kent State

East:
Marshall
Buffalo
Akron
Temple
UMASS
UCONN

Yea, so that is my crazy plan. We would get a solid pick ups in basketball, and we would lose some of the Michigan teams, though I would hate to get rid of CMU. Our football would also be great as we would be in a tough division. Our Basketball team would also be in a tough division playing new teams regular.

How an Ohio Football Season would look like

1.) SEC, Big Ten, or ACC school
2.) weaker conference
3.) Conference USA
4.) weaker conference
5.) Marshall
6,)NIU
7.) UCONN
8.) Toledo
9.) BGSU
10.) Kent State
11.) Miami
12.) Cincinnati

Ohio Basketball Season:

Conference Only:

Dayton x2
Butler x2
Cincinnati x2
Xavier x2
Miami x2
BGSU x2
Richmond
VCU
Duquesne
Marshall

Football televised games:
Marshall STO
Kent State STO
Miami STO
NIU ESPN U
UCONN ESPN U
Toledo ESPN U/ ESPN 3
SEC, Big Ten, ACC ESPN 2
Cincinnati ESPN 2/ESPN

Basketball:

Cincinnati ESPN 2
Xavier: ESPN U
Miami: STO
Richmond: STO
Marshall: STO
Duquesne: STO
Dayton: ESPN U
Butler: ESPN U
BGSU STO

Automatic two best teams in basketball birth into March Madness
Football: Champion - BCS bid, Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, maybe Pinstripe Bowl?

With the new coming today that the Big East looks headed to the dustbin of conferences, and barring a last minute invite from the ACC what is Cincinnati going to do? I think if the Big East is dissolved the MAC should immediately make overtures to Cincinnati, Memphis and Marshall. Cincy and Memphis are basketball powers and they certainly have upgraded their football programs while Marshall has probably been longing to get back into the MAC for a while. I imagine UConn will be invited to the ACC, but if they are not, why not throw a lifeline to them. The MAC should be proactive, it may be out best chance to upgrade and our stability should be a draw. Our football has been on the upswing for years and these schools realize that is where the money is at this point in college athletics.  Who knows, when the dust is settled it may look like the best option for all of these schools. What other options do they have at this point? It may sound crazy but crazier things have happened.

Big East Splitting, maybe dissolving.

Interesting quote from article: "What is certain is that programs such as Temple, which is set to join the Big East in basketball next season, Cincinnati, Connecticut and South Florida, are in terrible limbo."  [Emphasis mine]

That is one of the more interesting conference realignment theories I've seen. Would be really coolt o see it happen some day, but it won't.
