Thoughts: the attendance to population ratio is meaningless for stadiums that regularly sell out.

That is interesting, but if they are only calculating the actual city then it isn't accurate.  Like for tOSU you would need to include all the surrounding suburbs to get a more accurate picture.

It's a great statistic but they screwed up on their map.  They have Athens, GA with a circle showing greater than 75% but its ratio is only 50%.  They don't even have Athens, Ohio on the map.

I interpret it as OUr average attendance is 83% the population of Athens.

Let me clear up some confusion:

The map is wrong. The bubble on Athens, GA should be on Athens, OH

Columbus, Ohio's figure includes the entire metro area which is Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, Madison, Morrow, Pickaway, and Union Counties. 

Athens, Ohio's figure includes the entire Athens micro area which is Athens County. Or at least it should, but that doesn't quite make sense to me. Athens County's pop is around 60,000. That would mean average home attendance is around 50,000, which is not possible.

Not sure why it's moronic. It comes out with similar results to what you'd expect. Of course it's not perfect, but he never claimed it to be. What does it hurt to do the analysis and then take it with a grain of salt, which is exactly what he recommended be done?

Whats the harm? The harm is that no one takes it with a grain of salt. Did the author of the article at the top of this thread say "this should be taken with a grain of salt"? No, he just said "and this study found..." as if its God's honest truth.

Actually the author of the article said....

"In his analysis of the geography of college football fandom, Silver notes a curious pattern. Looking at Google searches for the term "college football" he finds..."

He clearly states that it was based on searches for "college football." Maybe he is wrong to assume that readers will think critically and make their own assumptions based on the clearly stated methodology. I, for one, appreciate the time he put into the analysis and find the results interesting--even if they are not a perfect approximation of football fandom.

Interesting. I thought it was added that they included Athens, Ohio (a micropolitan area) on a list of metropolitan areas. The Athens, GA number still says 50% though. Don't know where they got 83% from. Maybe OHIO football averages 83% of the Athens CITY population, which would be about 19,700. That makes more sense.
