Considering how long NIU held out before succumbing to Florida State, how would our team have fared with TT as a better passing QB than Jordan Lynch?  Our game wasn't perfect against ULM, but I think our team was healthy and prepared enough that we could have done better than NIU did against Florida State.  I understand it is all subjective, due to matchups and what not, but still it makes you think.

I doubt it.  I think Lynch just had an off night hitting his receivers.

Let's just be realistic here, FSU dominated Northern up front.  Had nothing to do with an "off night", and everything to do with being under assault all night long!   The hope that FSU would take Northern lightly and not play an inspired game went out the door, as those cats flat out brought the heat.  Much credit to Northern, they played hard and got after it and hung around, however they were rarely a threat to win the game.

Give me a healthy Ohio team, with all the missing players back, and healthy, and yes, I think they give FSU a game, just like they gave Penn State a game, at Penn State, in an emotionally charged atmosphere. I'm not saying Ohio would beat FSU, just that it would have been a battle. I know that Penn State isn't as good at FSU, and that Penn State improved as the season progressed, but the Ohio win over Penn State was no fluke - Ohio was a pretty good team at that point.

Even though Ohio dominated ULM, they were still a dozen players short, and even after the long rest, some weren't completely healthy. Still, that was the closest Ohio came to the team that beat Penn State.

I totally agree with Billy the Cat; I think Florida State would've beaten Ohio too, and rather soundly.  Our offensive line did GREAT at the Independence Bowl, but with having 2 relatively new starters in Ohio's o-line, Florida State's defensive front 7 would have crushed us.

I do think Tettleton would have performed better than Lynch.  As Lynch found out last night, he wasn't so fast after all, at least compared to FSU's defensive team speed.  I think TT is a better pure passer than Lynch and might have thrown the ball better.  But the end result would probably be the same.  Having never won the Orange Bowl before, Florida State was really motivated to play the game (Herbstreit sure got that wrong!) and would not have taken Ohio lightly.

Actually Florida State had a boatload of blown opportunities. The first third down conversion happened when they scored right before halftime. The Bobcat team we saw against Penn State and Louisiana Monroe would have certainly given the Seminoles a game, simply because we have a more diversified offense. We didn't play scared at Happy Valley, while it took Northern Illinois until the third quarter to get the frazzled looks off their face. I cheered hard for the Huskies and I am sure they did their best. However, we certainly played better in Happy Valley under very difficult cirumstances while the Huskies played before a neutral non-sellout crowd in Miami, a few hundred miles away from Tallahassee.

This sort of hints at what Bobcats 828 was getting at in another thread and I tend to agree-where Ohio would have had it all over FSU (and I'm serious in this) is coaching.  I know Coach Solich was criticized by some during the 3 game losing streak but the coaching staff that put together that Independence Bowl gameplan was head and shoulders above FSU's coaching staff.  I watched the Orange Bowl last night and came away less than impressed by Jumbo Fisher.  With his talent FSU should've beaten NIU by 40 points; it wasn't even close (this is where I do disagree with some of you-FSU's better than Penn State and their talent level-especially on defense-is a lot better than Penn State's).  With a better offensive gameplan FSU should have run roughshod over NIU right out of the gate.  Like C Money said, and he's right, FSU has Top 5 talent, plain and simple. I knew the game was over when FSU's 5th year fullback, who never had a 100 yard game in his career, ran faster than NIU's entire defense on that TD run in the first half.

I do think Coach Solich would have had Ohio in the game longer than NIU was.  A totally healthy Ohio team would have been more competitive.

Did he really say that? FSU now has a record of 4-5 in the Orange Bowl, with wins in 1992,1993,1995, plus this year.

I thought I saw it on a graphic.  This was towards the end of watching 9 straight hours of college football yesterday, so I could be wrong, but that's what I thought one of the graphics said (or was it that FSU had never won a BCS game in 3 tries?).  Anyway, don't let a misstatement of mine get in the way of a rambling statement!  :)  But Herbstreit was definitely wrong in thinking  before the game that FSU may not have their head in the game.  Like Billy the Cat said, FSU came to play!

Last three Orange Bowl scores:

2011 -- Stanford 40, Virginia Tech 12
2012 -- WVU 70, Clemson 33
2013 -- FSU 31, NIU 10

To me this both puts a little perspective on things and also makes me wonder just how often the announcers in these past two games said that the team getting clobbered had vastly inferior talent, would do much better next year when they were back playing teams in their pathetic conference, and all of the other snobbery we were subjected to last night.  I thought the Kirk H. might having been ghostwriting the scripts for these guys.

All that being said, if Lynch hadn't throw the 3rd Qt. interception and if that NIU idiot hadn't hit the FSU runner after a teammate had already shoved him out of bounds on that crucial third down play, this would have been an entirely different game down the stretch.  I like NIU's pluck if not some of their execution and their play calling.

I think it's disrespectful to NIU to try to claim Ohio'd done any better. NIU earned its trip. It dominated the conference.

(It always bothered me when Akron fans claimed they'd have made the same run the Bobcats did in the NCAA tournament.)

Just to be clear, I don't think that the Ohio team that beat ULM would have done any better than NIU did. I just think that the Ohio team that started the season was far better than the one that remained after all the injuries. NIU did win the conference, and deserved to be the one at the game, but that doesn't I can't think that an Ohio team without all the injuries might have beaten NIU.

Very interesting thread. A couple more points to ponder, an Ohio team would not have had the coaching carousel that the Huskies had to face in preperation for the game. Finally, I am very certain that the Ohio team we saw against Louisiana Monroe would have been the same team that would have faced the Seminoles. I doubt the Bobcats would have been intimidated in the least. After the debacle that was the end of the season, the Bobcats seemed to want to send a message for 2013. I for one hope it begins with an attention getting win at Louisville!

Louisville has already hung 30 points on Florida with just about an entire half to go.

It will MIGHTY tough to beat them....just be competitive and stay healthy.

Louisville will be ranked going into next season for sure if they manage this upset. Also might be our toughest football team to play against since Ohio State. I will be there next year for sure.

I agree, this talk that we could have hung with FSU last night and any hint that we would have been there if healthy is simply non-sense. NIU earned their opportunity, we did not even finish 1st or 2nd in the MAC East. I am not even sure one could make a logical comparison of FSU to Penn State, Penn State won some games, but the Big10 may have had its worse year in ages, and lacks the speed and aggressiveness that FSU showed last night.

Hats off to NIU again for playing with a toughness and determination, but that effort by FSU was pretty complete.

I was impressed with the little that I saw of Lynch during MAC season.  Was not impressed with him as a passer yesterday.  He was under pressure at some points--but not always.  He didn't impressme with his accuracy or his touch.

NIU did not have any big boys at d-tackle.  Perhaps Huynh and Crutcher would have fared better for us against FSU's o-line ??.

All true, but that shouldn't prevent us from wondering how a healthy Ohio team might have fared in the same situation.

Even worse, Matt Millen was doing the color commentary. You know, Matt Millen, the guy who put together the very worst NFL Team of all time, the 0-16 2008 Detroit Lions. It's hard to take anything he says seriously.

I was impressed by the article ESPN put out today.  NIU basically gave them an all-access pass to their program leading up to the game, was very insightful.

By the way I take nothing away from the great season NIU had, they deserved their bid.  The point of this thread for me was to speculate how a team that combined our showings from Penn State and ULM games would have done.  Never would I say we would have definitely beat FSU, but in my mind our offense when healthy was more diverse than NIU's and thus would have had a better shot against FSU's great defense.

Truthfully I believe part of our woes at one part in our season, aside from TT being hurt, was trying to feed Beau and Boykin the ball semi-equally when Boykin came back from injury.  From what I have seen Beau is the kind of back that thrives when he is getting all the carries aside from when he needs spelled.

I really like the set up for the season opener. Everyone will be singing Louisville's praises and awaiting their arrival into the ACC. This will take the pressure off us. I do hope we are alloted some tickets for the game (I would love to be there.) The MAC has been knocking off teams as of late. However, we are far more competitive and talented than in the 80s. I remember watching the Redskins (the old name for the Redhawks for our youthful posters) defeat LSU in 1985? in some bar in Athens (maybe the Cat's Eye or Tony's.) We have made huge strides in talent since then as evidenced by our defeating Pitt and Penn State during Coach Solich's era. The 80s were the days that each year we would have to beg and fudge the attendance figures just to remain 1-A. We have come a long way and much credit goes to Coach Grobe and Coach Solich. Perhaps before the game we could post a greatest MAC upset thread and hopefully add to it!
