Anyone have any thoughts on where Sammy Shon (1978-81) ranks in the pantheon of Bobcat greats?  He was one of the most exciting players I saw during my first couple of years on campus, but those were rather non-descript teams. Kent State's QB (Julian Edelmann?) from a few years back was a similar player - very elusive, just barely a strong enough arm to complete some big plays.

As I recall he didn't have much of an OL, so it's really hard to say how good he could have been with a better supporting cast.

Shon could flat out play. Big arm on the little guy and he was able to buy time in the pocket with his scrambling ability. Extremely exciting player.  Put up big numbers in his day.

My guess is Sammy was probably an inch shorter than Tyler Tettleton.  Sammy looked cool with those Houston Astro Stripped Pants the football team wore in those days.

Another Youngstown Bobcat! Graduated from The Rayen  School, I think. I think TT is about to eclipse Shon's long standing records.

His career passing stats are impressive considering we ran the veer at the time.  I was in his dorm freshman year...was a good guy.  Frank Komar would take exception to your non descript comment.

Actually, Sammy did have a few All-MAC linemen while he was playing.  Out of that loaded 1980 squad, when Sammy was 2nd Team ALL-MAC, Ray Bloch (who later went on to the active roster of the Cleveland Browns) was a 2nd team selection at tackle while Don Puthoff was First Team All-MAC at center.

For those of you on FaceBook, this great photo includes a few well know ex-Bobcat football players:

I remember Ohio1985 quite well and he was a solid lineman himself earning 2nd Team All-MAC in 1994 and blocking for Glenn Hunter who as also 2nd Team as a running back.

I knew Ray Bloch. Ray Bloch is a friend of mine. You sir, are no Ray Bloch!

Also, you must say the names correctly:

Shammy Shon and Don Pootoff.

Coach Burke.....

I just wanted to reach out to you and thank you so much for giving me the opportunities and for being a great leader of men.  I contribute a big part of my business success to learnings you provided at Ohio U.

Hope things are going well.
