FAU has signed a deal with a local prison operator for naming rights to their stadium, and it's creating quite a controversy.  Not just that it's a prison operator -- although some have called the Owls' home "Owl-catraz" -- but apparently the prison operator has had problems regarding the treatment of inmates and has had OSHA issues.  It only gets the school $6 mill over 12 years, and should have been vetted better.  On the other hand, it's gotten them a ton of publicity, and if you believe PT Barnum that's not all that bad.

Does it also give them first call on recruiting of this prison operator's 'clients'?

Or maybe any FAU players who wind up as a "client" get special accommodations.

How much is Peden paying us per year?

Anyway, pretty funny situation.  Owl-catraz is awesome.  Hope that sticks.

They should have plenty of "labor" to work on stadium maintenance, cleaning after the games, etc.

Maybe the could nickname the stadium "The Big House"....... oh wait shoot that's taken........well.......how about "The Slammer?"

I'm thinking we could have a drilling company pony up for Peden. The Frack would probably go over real well locally. ;)

Actually it would go over well with the grassroots community in the area -- many of whom are selling mineral rights to drilling companies.  Might attract some new fans.  Great way to think out of the box, Mike!  (Read the recent ANews editorial on the subject of the Fracking moratorium proposed by some local wackos.  I don't agree with the ANews on a regular basis, but they hit the nail on the head on this one.)

I'll be sure to tell my future in-laws you think they're wackos.

Well, it's not just yours truly who is calling them wackos.  If OCF and the ANews agree, you can take it to the bank!  Don't feel too bad JSF, there are lots of folks who would say that their in-laws are wackos.  In your case, they'll just be certified wackos.  And, they might be very loveable wackos.  I know very nice wackos myself, and some are even related to me.

Difference is, I happen to know you know them. I believe you've even been to their house. Probably more than once.

Yes, I have wacko friends and, as I said, relatives.  Those you refer to probably think i'm a reactionary neanderthal throw back.  Can't we all just get along!

If "wacko" means I prefer that my tap water not contain toxic sludge, then sign me up for the nuthouse!

It's important to know the difference between pollution caused by conventional surface drilling, which can get into the water table; and that potentially caused by deep wells -- way below the water table -- that are much less likely to pollute the water table.  Also, a course in high school civics should have taught you the appropriate level of government to which to address these kinds of concerns.  City council or a vote of the Athens citizenry is not really the way to "ban fracking" if that's what you want to do.  It's just that with the local hysteria here about the "fracking issue" its a very easy issue to demagogue.  No, I'm not related to Terry Smith of the Athens News!
