Sorry for posting this here but I wasn't sure where to post it.  Yahoo sports in reporting that wrestling is being removed from the olympics efective with the 2020 games. Excuse me but I believe wrestling is one of the two original olympic sports. Is nothing sacred anymore?

No, just look at what we have now and what they want to add instead.

Maybe I a naive but wrestling still strikes me as a very relevant sport that is popular in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.  It allows many countries with modest means to compete on a world stage.  I have enjoyed seeing athletes from many of the former Soviet bloc countries succeed in the sport, usually being one of the only medal winners for their homelands.  Plus it is truly the most pure form of competition I think as it is one on one, competitors using only their strength and smarts.  I think some of the other sports that have other high profile international competitions could go.

Thank GOD they preserved the Modern Pentathlon! We couldn't live without that combination of...um...I read what the associated events were this morning and the only thing I can remember is that it included dressage or some other horsey thing

Table setting?  Or was it just interior decorating?

The IOC probably determined that match-fixing in Olympic wrestling is too difficult. My hunch is we'll see wrestling return in 2024, but improved with more television- and gambler-friendly athletes, grotesquely colorful uniforms, scantily clad valets, cages, ladders, and Mean Gene Okerlund.

The era of WWF that I watched growing up did have a strong international flavor with British Bulldog, Nikolai Volkoff, The Iron Sheik, the Mountie, Kamala etc.

The Iron Sheik was no match for the uncle of Sabu, The Orininal Sheik. The fire followed by the deadly camel clutch was unbeatable.  The Sheik was also from that great country "Parts Unknown".

The Modern Pentathlon events have been around as long as wrestling, so I think it should be kept. They should've dropped a newer sport, like trampoline.

I read that going in, the Pentathlon was considered the favorite to get chopped. I also read Juan Antionio Sammarach Jr. (Not sure I spelled that right), the son of the former IOC President, is also on the board that voted and the board that governs the pentathlon.

or rhythmic gymnastics, or quilt making, or hair dressing, or anything but golf.  Please don't say golf.  And where does this leave demolition derby on the waiting list?  Personally, I'm a big fan of team handball but since my local court closed down it's hard to find a game (match?) and I'm not able to keep up.

I'm a big golf fan, too, but the issue I have is that a gold medal in golf is not the standard in the sport. What I mean by that is more people are likely to remember a golfer if he wins a major, particularly the Masters because of the green jacket, not a gold medal. Same with basketball; a player is more likely to be remembered by how many NBA titles he has, not gold medals. I'm NOT saying golf shouldn't have been added, but I just wanted to add some perspective...

No, it hasn't. Wrestling has been in every modern olympics, dating to 1896, as well as being a staple of the ancient games. Modern Pentathlon was first included in the olympics in 1912, and was pretty much developed at the same time.
