This is the last thing anyone in the athletic department or university wants...but the schedule is handed down from the MAC. A couple years ago, you'll recall we hosted Louisiana-Lafayette on Halloween and the crowd was dreadful. Students are already drunk and townies are afraid to leave their homes. Stinks, but it is what it is...

Of course, it was LaLaf, so I'm not sure there would've been more than 15,000 there no matter what weekend it was.  We were there and frankly didn't think much about it being Halloween weekend.  I think with Fiami you're likely to have a huge crowd of mostly drunken students and it might get pretty raucous.  It's poor timing, but if they can get a noon or 1:00 start they can make the most of it.

That Lou-La game day just had a weird feeling about it. It seemed like we had a decent crowd, but it just had no energy. Hopefully a Miami game crowd will be rowdier.

I thought the lack of crowd intensity was due to the organized walkout...

This can work. The culture has changed at Ohio Univeristy. Athletics is no longer second fiddle. Ohio University and Athens are known for Halloween. There is no reason we cannot incorporate football into that tradition. If we were ever going to give this a go, this is the year. And Miami is perfect opponent to try it against.

Now if the football teams lays an egg, then this will be a miserable failure... But so will the rest of the season. If the football team is rocking, this game will be epic.

An earlier start time is a must - no later than a 3:00 kickoff. 1:00 would be ideal, though athletics may also wish to be cognizant of OSU hosting Penn State that same day.

I was there. The game had a Black Friday feel to it with a suppressed student turnout. The Miami game is going to be a lot different because its Miami and payback for last season. You know Miami is going to bring some fans. The Lou-La was the last game anybody planned to go to in 2010.

I agree. Timing is going to be very important. There are a lot of things Ohio Athletics will need to do to make this game live up to its potential. I am confident Ohio marketing knows exactly how to pull this off. I do not think they were wishing against this as some suggest.. This is a tremendous opportunity. Many factors to account for, but overall I think this is a good thing.

I distinctly remember Boo Jackson throwing 5 interceptions that game.  It was hard for the crowd to get excited.

We still won though.  Somehow...

True dat. Weren't 4 of those picks in the first half, and yet we somehow were leading convincingly into the 4th quarter? And then Lou-La ended up converting like 3 onside kicks in a row and we couldn't get their offense off the field for anything. Just a strange, strange game that day.

I really don't see any upside to this. In fact, a hated rival combined with a traditionally raucous weekend with unpredictable out-of-towners is a recipe for potential problems.

The MAC HAS TO DO BETTER THAN THIS.

How can they not recognize something like this as a possible conflict? And how can the MAC not at least confer with Ohio officials about it? As a leader in attendance and conference success over the past several years, I think we've earned that priviledge with conference schedule-makers.

Obnoxious claim that we need a new conference because of this.  The MAC can't schedule games based around a Halloween Party.  Our schedule is always extremely favorable we have nothing to complain about.  Halloween is always this weekend, changing it would cause an uproar.  Instead of throwing up arms like this is the end of the world, I'm sure our department is putting together a creative plan to try and make it work.

Halloween is always this weekend. Exactly. The MAC office should know that and have some common sense here. This is more than a Halloween party. It's an influx of out-of-towners that strain the resources of this small town. That's one issue. The other is lost opportunity for a big rivalry game to be held on its own weekend, independent of the impending chaos of Halloween weekend.

I think that's a tad exaggeration...ALWAYS favorable? We've all had our share of "beefs" with the schedule over the years.

For years, we never had a home game on Halloween. I was always told that we specifically requested this from the MAC. I don't know what circumstances led to this year's game...but I imagine the blame falls on the MAC. I don't think anyone (McDavis, Schaus, City of Athens, football staff, etc.) wants to have a game on Halloween.

Can we weather the storm and get a decent crowd? Probably. Our team should hopefully be rolling and the athletic department seems to know how to get students to games.

However, it's safe to say that you'd rather NOT have a game on Halloween...if given the choice...for a lot of reasons.

I have as many issues with the MAC as anyone, but I think the criticism here is incredibly off-base here. I find it very hard to believe the MAC have been friendly to us about not scheduling a HallOUween home game for over a decade (at least) and all of a sudden they just decided to screw us over.
 

The much more likely explanation is that McDavis, Schaus and Co not only specifically requested a change in late October scheduling philopsohy, but also specifically requested the MAC schedule our premier conference matchup and archrival on our university's most well known day of the year.
 

Ohio Stunter used the term "raucous" to describe the crowd in Athens on Halloween.  This is not Miami... I WANT the Peden crowd to be raucus, not a few people sitting on their hands. Not a riot. Really loud. A buzz in the air.
 

Ohio University has been known for its Halloween celebration for years. Our football program has advanced to the point where it can compliment the Halloween celebration.  Not be overshadowed by it.  This wasn't the case 10 years ago. This was not the case in 2010. It is now. 
 

Last year, we rolled into the Miami game ranked and undefeated. If that happens this year, this will be the coolest Halloween celebration in Ohio University history. This is a chance for Ohio athletics to profit off Halloween in a big way. This can work, and if it does it'll be a special event that becomes synonymous with Ohio football.

I was nervous at first, but I'm liking this scheduling development the more I'm thinking about it:

Person A: Hey Matt, what are you up to this weekend
Me: I'm going to the OHIO/Fiami game!
Person A: So you're not going down to the Athens Halloween party to act like you're still in college?
Me: What? The Halloween Party is the same day? I thought it was the next weekend. Oh well, I'll behave and make my way back to my friend's house outside of town before things start getting too crazy
