Jim,
As far as I know they do these tryouts every year. That is the way we end up with around 110 players total on the roster. Say 85 scholarship players, 5-10 preferred walk-ons, then they usually fill out with players from campus tryouts. someone will correct me if I am wrong, I'm sure.

Dead on, with the exception that the roster limit is larger than 110 now. Not much.

I wonder who has had the biggest impact on the team after showing up for one of these.

Pretty much every school still does this, including Ohio State.

Probably hard to go back and sift through who is a PWO and who is just a regular WO. Feels like we hear about kickers being called in from the frat house more than anywhere else though.

I do recall a young Baker Reagan Mayfield having to walk on, twice.
