Mid-American Conference to scrap divisions starting in 2024 in favor of 3-team pods
For the first time since 1996, the MAC will revert to a division-less structure.

12 members of the conference will be guaranteed two conference opponents every season. The new scheduling structure guarantees each MAC program will see the other 11 members at least once during a three-year cycle.

Steinbrecher confirmed the four three-team pods are as follows:
Akron, Buffalo Kent State
Ball State, Miami (OH), Ohio
Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, Toledo
Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan

We played MOFO at home this past season so it should be a road game in '24. The last time we played BSU it was in Muncie so they should be a home game this season.

We were at Akron and Buffalo this past season, so we should get one of them at home and play at Kent.

We were at BG and NIU in '23 so we should get one of them at home in '24 and play Toledo on the road.

Wee had CMU at home in '23, so we'll likely get them on the road this year with either EMU or wmu AT HOME.

I was thinking the same thing, Andrew. Until I considered who's responsible for scheduling these games, the MAC office. Anything that makes sense goes out the window under these circumstances.

Yeah, I had another thought about the lazy way to do it. Forget about the past and focus on the future. Designate the pods as A, B, C, and D, with each pod needing six games every year vs the other pods, in two-year home-ad-home cycles. In the first cycle, pod A plays B and C, B plays A and D, C plays A and D, and D plays B and C. In the next cycle, A plays B and D, B plays A and C, C plays B and D, and D plays A and C. Then in the third cycle, A plays C and D, B plays C and D, C plays A and B, and D plays A and B. Each team plays every team in the other pods four times every six years.

Pataskala what you mentioned is what a logical conference office would do. Play every team in the other pods four times every six seasons. However, like someone mentioned above, we have to remember who is doing the scheduling. I do not trust the league office.

Do I sense a wager in how many times we get Toledo in the next 4 years under the current format? (personally am betting once, but that's just me).....or how many times we travel to Buffalo in that same stretch (play them 3 times, all three games in Buffalo)

Just as long as there are no safeties called from the 5 yard line each of the 3 times.

How do they handle tie-breaks? Do we know?

I dont necessarily love the idea of overall record being the tie-break, cause then it will incentivize us to play South Alabama rather than Iowa State or something, but I guess that's a gripe for another day.

In 2021 when there were 3 teams tied at 6-2 in the conference.

7-7 Kent State went to the title game vs NIU (In this new case, 9-4 CMU would've went).
