Saw this commercial posted on the Facebook page today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXXnQGWfhCY

There's clearly a push to make "My State - My Team" a thing...

I would like to see us advertise at Progressive Field in Cleveland like Univ of Toledo does in Comerica. Everytime I turn on SportsCenter and see a highlight of someone hitting a homerun at Comerica Park I see University of Toledo ads on the outfield wall. My State, My Team would be perfect there.

That is a great ad for the outlying areas--Dayton, Cinci, Cleve, Columbus and such.

A real 'make a statement.'

Works for the Athens area also.

"My State, My Team" is just fantastic. Can we all appreciate the fact our marketing team is bolstering their advertising efforts (with a great slogan).

If that is the case then they should market those areas. I have seen no advertising of Ohio University in the Gallipolis area. I see more Marshall stuff here. I think one of those signs showing the cheap season ticket packages would be well received in this area.

Agree . . . great for the whole state, but particularly needed in SEO as well as on the corner of Broad and High in Cowtown!

I just got a banner ad for "the public Ivy" when I clicked on this page.

"Public ivy" is another name for Kudzu.

A part of me can see why that may be an attractive tag line for them but to me it says things like:

"Hey I am a 3 year starter on JV!"

"I was the fastest of the slow kids!"

"I was understudy of the year!"

Food for thought: A number of years ago in a national review of colleges BOTH OHIO and OXFORD TECH were referred to as "Public Ivies"! At the time it was generally seen as a positive thing to be in that category.  However, I think our "OHIO my State -- My Team" campaign is much better than advertising OHIO as a "public ivy" in the current context.

In a previous life I worked for an ad agency and we always tried to steer our clients away from billboards. The cost is too high and the ROI is too low. They're usually an ego buy.

Generally I want to agree, but it depends on the product. Some things are custom made for billboards, like "McDonald's, next exit." Anything that's not primarily about location (next exit), is probably a waste, or would require a massive purchase of space to flood a market, which, like you said, would probably result in a lousy ROI.

true, that's the difference between a Call to Action campaign vs Brand Awareness. A call to action has a specific request (exit here for food, call here for tickets) where as the brand awareness would just say McDonalds, I'm Lovin It or OHIO. My Team. My State., etc. The Buy Tickets boards could be effective within a certain radius of Athens though.

but, the more I think about it, a big ol' My Team My State billboard could have some value if you stuck it in a controversial area, like right by another school's campus or strip of bars. Something that would create a bit of a stir. Like a big green middle finger in a sea of scarlet and regret.

All true, but the key here is the brand we're talking about.  McDonald's putting up a billboard that just said McDonald's would be absolutely pointless because McDonald's has an extremely high level of brand awareness.  However, Ohio doesn't possess that type of brand awareness.  Throwing up a billboard near the Lane Ave exit would certainly ruffle some feathers, possibly garner some Columbus media attention, and obviously draw a lot of eyes.  Maybe could add something like "My Team.  My State.  Go Green."  so it has a bit of a call to action feel.  I bet if the right design was put together, you could probably get the money donated from Bobcat alumni to make it happen.
