According to a Facebook post from his son, Lichtenberg died recently following a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.  He was 72.

Wow, very sad.  He was still coaching high school football until fairly recently, wasn't he?  He certainly seemed like a decent guy who was thrown into a bad position with very little financial support.  He was one of the only MAC coaches without a strength and conditioning program, I believe.

I always enjoyed my interactions with him...he was a very good man. The situation he was thrown into would have made it impossible for Nick Saban to win. It's amazing how far our football program has come since those very, very dark days...

My condolences. 72 is way too young to be leaving this world.

I am disappointed that there has been no official acknowledgement of his passing from the athletic department.  From all accounts, Lichtenberg was an honorable guy who did the best he could under poor circumstances.  His passing should be noted.

Agree. He may not have had a great coaching record, but he was a classy guy and loved his players. As a freshman, he sat near me at the MAC men's track championships where he came to support his players. Took time to chat with me a bit. Nice guy.

The lack of a notice might be related to the holiday weekend. See if something comes up tomorrow.

Agree about PapaL being a good and honest man.  I, too, had conversations with him and always liked him as a person.  I'm very sad to learn of his passing.

He was my middle-school gym teacher, great guy.  Very sad to hear.

Great guy.  And, a great family.

72 is too young.

Really nice story about his history and career in today's Cincinnati Enquirer:

Still nothing on OhioBobcats.com.  He deserves better than that.

Agreed SBH.  Not much sense of or appreciation for history at OU right now.  Everything current is the biggest and best or a record.  Sad but true and in this case very sad because Tom was  a great asset to the university and a real gentleman.

Tributes such as this are much more meaningful when the deceased's name is spelled correctly.

Typos have been an all-too-recurring problem with the Athletics website during the past year or so.

I never met the coach but I met his charming wife at a reception at UNC in the early '90s.   I also worked with one of his nieces around that time; she adored him.

Dan Patrick mentioned on air today that Lichtenberg coached him and his brothers in high school football.

Ugh. Inexcusable. Reminds of the time The Post mixed up the headshots in that 2002 or 2003 shooting of Ross...

I taught school with his brother Tim at Mason High School who was the football coach there and I was the band director. I met Tom L. when I became band director at Athens High School in the mid '80's. He was a class act and always had time to talk with me when I saw him, especially since I knew his brother, Tim. He and his some of his coaches used to stop by the bar every so often (name escapes me) that was behind the Crystal Casino at the time. My prayers and thoughts are with his entire family.

Great article on Liichtenberg in the Messenger by Arkley.  Link is on the BAC home page.

When I taught Beginning Reporting misspelling a name was an automatic "F."

Dru Evarts, SBH's mentor, had the same grading policy.

Good policy.
