As someone in this profession, these kinds of things disappoint me. I understand the move toward digital media, but I don't understand how that takes less reporters and photographers.

Great point about coverage, but I'm sure you already know the answer: Most companies that own papers (Advance, the PD owner, is among the worst) don't care about the actual coverage anymore. They care about clicks and pageviews. Our country is quickly killing off the watchdogs that keep track of government officials, "afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted" and do all the hard work that real reporting requires. We're all a lot poorer for it.

There have been a lot of unpopular changes to the Cincinnati Enquirer recently but nothing as drastic as these.  Their coverage of local sports-from high school to pros, is pretty solid really.   But I do get frustrated how bad their system is for logging in to the paid subscription for online viewing.  Print edition looks more like a magazine than a newspaper.  The biggest black eye is they moved production from a working class area of Cincy to Columbus-thus many now call it the Columbus Dispatch, Cincinnati Edition.
