It's part of their refocus to digital delivery.  Starting next week, they'll have a print edition only three days a week.  The latest list of those who are going can be found here.  Some took voluntary layoffs so that others could keep their jobs.  I don't see anyone who regularly covers MAC sports, but I understand that all three reporters who covered high school sports will be gone.

As someone in this profession, these kinds of things disappoint me. I understand the move toward digital media, but I don't understand how that takes less reporters and photographers.

How about the fact that all employees were told to wait by their phones from 8-9:30 a.m. for a call.  If they got a call, they still had a job; if not, sorry.

Real class there.

Great point about coverage, but I'm sure you already know the answer: Most companies that own papers (Advance, the PD owner, is among the worst) don't care about the actual coverage anymore. They care about clicks and pageviews. Our country is quickly killing off the watchdogs that keep track of government officials, "afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted" and do all the hard work that real reporting requires. We're all a lot poorer for it.

That is really disappointing to hear, people want to talk all the time about how the labor force lacks training and skills, yet, many times the example set by management is lacking those same skills.

There have been a lot of unpopular changes to the Cincinnati Enquirer recently but nothing as drastic as these.  Their coverage of local sports-from high school to pros, is pretty solid really.   But I do get frustrated how bad their system is for logging in to the paid subscription for online viewing.  Print edition looks more like a magazine than a newspaper.  The biggest black eye is they moved production from a working class area of Cincy to Columbus-thus many now call it the Columbus Dispatch, Cincinnati Edition.

The problem with too many local media websites is that they pander to people who want the dumbest stories around.  Stuff like the woman in northern Ohio who peed her pants when she was stopped by a cop.  Or Christ's face in a piece of toast.  But people can get this stuff most anywhere.  They should follow the lead of the big city newspapers (Washington Post, NY Times, Chi Trib) and do in-depth, local stuff.  National news is available anywhere; local news isn't.
